RAFAEL FREYTEZ PINEDA, 0F BARQE'ISIMETO, VENEZUELA.
HOLDER FOR CIGARS AND CIGARETTES.
To all whom z'tmay concern.
Be it known that I, RAFAEL FREYTEZ PI- NEDA, a citizen of Venezuela, South America, and a resident of Barquisimeto, Estado Lara, Venezuela, South America, have invented a new I and Improved Holder for Cigars and Cigarettes, of which the following is adescri tion. 1 v
y invention relates to a sanitary holder for cigars and cigarettes, the general object of the invention being to avoid the bad etfects of the nicotin on the smoker.
The stated object is attained by provid% ing a holder in the form of a stem comprising a mouthpiece and a front member adapted to receive the cigar or cigarette,.together with means interposed between the front member and the mouthpiece and constituting a smoke washer through which the smoke is caused to pass for eliminating the nicotin and incidentally cooling the smoke.
A further important object of the invention is to provide a smoke washer so mounted on the stem as to be disposed in a perpendicular or approximately perpendicular. position to the stem when the holder is to be used or swung upwardly to lie alongside of and approximately parallel with the stem, thereby giving the holder a compact form to be conveniently carried in the pocket or in a small case made for the purpose.
More specifically, Ihave in view an embodiment of the invention reflecting important considerations with respect to'simplicity of construction and durability as well as the convenience of assembling the parts or disassembling the same for cleaning or repair.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder for cigars or cigarettes embodying myinvention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse vertical section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1;
-Fig. 3 is a side elevation with parts in section as indicated by the line 33, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a fra entary sectional plan view, the section eing taken on the. line 4- 1, Fig. 3. 1
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, a stem is provided including a front member 10 adapted to receive a cigar or cigarette and a' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
Application filed October 7, 1919. Serial No. 329,155.
mouthpiece 11 having respectively smoke passages 12 and 13 out of direct communication with each other. On the front member or on the mouthpiece at the juncture of these is a preferably enlarged member 14: extending laterally from which is an arm 15 round in cross section and preferably slightly tapering toward the outer end. In the member 14 and its arm 15 is a transverse smoke passage 12 communicating with the smoke passage 12 when the stem and front member are assembled and a smoke passage 13 communicating with the smoke passage 13. Said smoke passages 12, 13 terminate in downwardly directed smoke passages 12, 13*, efiitending through the periphery of the arm On the arm 15 is a hanger element 16 comprising a ring 16 embracing and snugly fitting said arm and a depending nipple 16 having thereon a smoke washerdesignated generally by the numeral 17 comprising a tubular neck 17 engaged with the nipple 16 and a preferably spherical water chamber 17 formed upon or secured to the lower end of said neck. In the illustrated form the neck 17 is detachably secured to nipple 16 by a threaded connection as at 16 and also. advantageously, chamber 17 is formed with a neck at the'top detachably secured by a threaded connection as at 1'? with the neck 17. The nipple 16 has a vertical passage 18 which in the pendent position of the nipple extends vertically, establishing communication between the smoke passage 12 and theneck 17 a of the washer and a similar vertical passa e 19 in said nipple leads from the neck 1 to the smoke passage 13 for conducting the smoke to the mouthpiece 11. A tube 20 extends from the smoke passage 18 downwardly through the stem 17 to near the bottom of the water chamber 17 to be immersed at its lower end in the water indicated at A contained in said chamber. Said tube 20 at its upper end extends into the ni ple 16 and is supported thereby.
With the described construction when the washer 17 is pendent on the stem the smoke passages, 18, 19 will register with the smoke to bubble through the water Ate pass outwardly through passage 19 and the mouthpiece 11, thereby eliminating the nicotin from the smoke and desirably coolin the latter. When the holder is not require for use, the washer '17 is raised to a positionalongside the stem as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3 so that the holder is in compact form to be carried. in a pocket or in a small case, the mounting of the hanger 16 on the arm 15 toturn on the latter, permitting the washer to be swung to either of the two positions. The tapering form of the arm 15 and ring 16 insures a tlght joint therebetween so that there is no leaka e of water and in the raised position 0 the washer, it will be. seen that the assages 18, 19 are out of communication w1th the passages 12 '13": The hanger 16 is detachably held on the arm. 15 by suitable means, there being shown for the purpose a nut 21 on the threaded outer end, ofsald arm.
' In using my device difierent results are obtained according to the character of the liquid laced therein, whereby to vary the tastsbo tobacco and the matter retained by the lquid. For example, if water is put in the chamber 17", since water does not dissolve out the nicotin the latter passes with illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of canbe consid'era "ture from the spirit of the part of the contained ammonium and pyridin to the mouth iece and the taste of smoke is altered very llttle while at the same time the injurious qualities of the smoke are at least diminished. On the other hand, if various degrees of strength are employed instead of water, quite diiferent taste is obtained and also a grade of opiation varying'according to the the solutlon, This allpwsthe rid himself of the smoker to graduall does not feel a cravsmokinghabit until e for smoking.
my. invention I do not limit myself strictly to the-mechanical .details herein illustrated since manifestly the same bly varied without deparinvention as defined in the appended clalm's.
.brought into or out of re Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1'. A holder for cigars and cigarettes, including a stem presenting a front member adapted to receive a cigar or cigarette, and a mouthpiece, said front member and mouthpiece having smoke passages out of direct communication with each other and an intermediate washer establishing communication between said smoke passages and swingable from a depending position on the stem to a position adjacent to the stem.
2. A holder for cigars and cigarettes, including a stem presenting a front member adapted to receive a cigar or cigarette, and a mouthpiece, said front member and mouthpiece having smoke passages out of direct communication with each other, a member presenting a lateral arm and havin smoke passages communicatin respective y with the first-mentioned smo e passages, and a smoke washing means suspended on said arm at a side of the stem and having passages communicating respectively, through the passa es in said member with the firstmentione smoke passages to establish communication between the latter said washing means being turnable on said. arm from a position pendent on the stem to a position approximately parallel-with the stem.
3. A holder for cigars and cigarettes, including astem presenting a front member adapted to receive a cigar or cigarette, and a mouthpiece, said front member and mouthpiece having smoke passages out of direct communicatlon with each other, a member presenting a lateral arm and havin smoke passages communicating respective with the first-mentioned smoke passages, a anger on said arm at a side. of the stem, said hanger presenting a ring. fitting said arm and adapted to be turned thereon, and a smoke washer carried by said hanger, the hanger having smoke passages adapted to be 'ster with the smoke passages of the arm y the turning of the hanger on the arm.
