` L (bk/img Nenamel) i STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. COLEMAN, OF BLUE SPRINGS, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO ROBERT C. WILSON, OF BLUE SPRINGS, NEBRASKA.
PLIERS.
Application filed May 22, 1920.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE L. COLEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blue Springs, in the County of Gage and State of Nebraska., have invented a new and useful Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to tools, and more particularly to pliers, or the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide pliers having a novel form of pivot means for connecting the handles of lthe pliers, to permit of adjustment of the jaws formed on the ends of the handle, to facilitate the use of the pliers onarticles of various sizes.
A further object of the invention is to provide camming means carried by one of the handles of the pliers and adapted to co operate with the opposite handle for forcing the jaws of the pliers into cooperative relation with each other to more securely grip the article under operation.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a connection between the handles to permit'the jaws to automatically adjust themselves.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing zw Figure l illustrates a plan view of a pliers constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 348 of Fig. 1. j
Referring ton the drawing in detail, the reference characters 5 and 6 designate the opposed handle sections of the pliers which are provided with the jaws 7, formed on one of the ends thereof.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
Serial No. 333,407.
'The handle section 5 is provided with a pivot pln8, which is substantially oval in cross section, so that the same will move within the elongated opening 9 formed in the handle section (5, the opening being shown as extending` transversely of the handie section to permit the jaws to he adjusted toward and away from each other so that they may accommodate themselves for use with articles of various sizes.
into close engagement with the article under operation, to insure a rigid gripping of the article.
It might be further stated that due to the construction of the pin 8, the head l2 thereof prevents displacement of one section with relation to the other, and at the same time permits .of an automatic adjustment, when the sections are moved apart to open the i jaws thereof.
Having thus described i the invention, what is claimed as new is In: a tool, opposed pivoted handle sections carrying jaws, one of said sections having an elongated opening, a pivot pin operating 1n the opening and carried by the opposed section, a lug carried by one section and adapted to coperate with one edge of the opposed section for causing the pin to move in the opening to permit the jaws to grip a body;
Inl testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE L. COLEMAN.
