Description

A. REZNiCEK-,
DOOR FASTENER.
APPLICATION man APR. 1, 1920.
Patentefl Mar. 15, 1921.
A TTOH'NEY onrrs GFFICE.
DO OR-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ANTON Rnzmonn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Fasteners, of which the following is a description.
The present invention relates to improvements in door keepers, and it is proposed particularly to provide, in connection with a latch or lock, means adapted to enable the door to be opened partially, and at the same time locked against further opening, when desired, this action enabling one when within the house, to see who is at the door before opening the door further to admit them, the door being, at the same time, locked, so that a stranger, or undesirable persons cannot force admittance.
An object of the invention is to provide such a device which will be of simple and economical construction, convenient to operate, and positive and reliable in its locking action.
A further object is to provide such a de vice which may be operated to lock the door in closed position, independently of the lock or latch,so that it will not be pos-v sible to open the door from without, with a ke 7 Ag a preferred embodiment of my invention I propose to make the improvement an into ral part of the ordinary latch.
ith these and other objects in view, an embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying drawings and this embodiment will be hereinafter more fully described" with reference thereto, and the invention will be finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the contiguous portions of a door jamb and door, showing a latch embodying my improvement provided thereon.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view showing the upper side of the device in elevation, and'in' position to permit opening 0% the door.
Fig. 3 is a similar view, but showing 1n full lines, the device in position to lock the door against opening independently of the latch, and in dotted lines showing the partially open and locked position 01 the door.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 15, 1921.
' Application filed. April 7, 1920. Serial No. 371,855.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary detail view, partially in section, of the device, and,
Fig. 5 is a sectional View taken along the line 55, of Fig. 4.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, the embodiment or" my invention shown therein, is employed in connection with an ordinary swinging door 10 and door jamb 11, and is made an integral part of a spring latch device, comprising a casing 12, housing a spring bolt 13, adapted to be retracted by a rotatable knob 14, and secured to the door and a keeper 15, secured to the jamb.
Upon the forward end of the casing 12 there is provided an arm 16, extending outwardly from the casing, and projected for wardly over the keeper, as at 17, this portion 17 being of substantially horse shoe shape, having an opening 18 therein, substantially circular, and provided with a restricted entrance opening 19.
The keeper is provided with a pair of upstanding lugs or posts 20, between which there is hingedly mounted the end or" a rod 21 by means of a pin 22, the rod being flattened at its hinged end, as at 23 and 24, and for a portion of its length to permit it to be swung into engagement with the arm 17, the thickness of the flattened portion being slightly less than the width of the entrance opening 19, while for the remainder of its length the rod is of circular or enlarged cross section relatively to the portions 23 and 24, and is adapted to be engaged with the opening 18, being of greater diameter, however, than the entrance 19,-so that when engaged in the opening 18 it is not possible to disengage the rod from the arm 16 unless the flattened portions 23 and 24 are in registering relation to the entrance 19.
A shoulder 25 is formed at the end of the enlarged portion of the rod adjacent the flattened portions 23 and 24, and at its outer end there is provided a knob 26, relatively larger than the opening 18, and not possible of passage through said opening.
Between the posts 20 there is provided a socket 27, in which there is disposed a plunger 28 and a spring 29 beneath the same, the plunger adapted to yieldably engage the end of the rod 21, said rod being provided with a flanged portion 30, disposed in a plane at right angles to the a is of the rod, and adapted to engage squarely upon the plunger when swung outwardly, as indi cated in full lines in Figs. and 4. In this position the device constitutes a positive lock to prevent opening of the door indopendently or the ch, so that it is not possible then to opt opening, the rod is swung to th dotted line position in which the opening 18 is engaged with the enlarged portion of the rod 21 during the opening of h door, the knob 26 limiting the opening movement. It is then impossible to open the door further, or to manipulate the device from the outside, so as to permit of further opening of the door without first closing the door, so that the flanged portions 23 and 24 may be brought into relation with the restricted entrance opening 19. In the position of the device when it is not in use, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the plunger 28, engaging the side of the rod, holds the same yieldingly in position, and prevents rattling or accidental movement to projected position.
WVhile I have shown my improvements as an integral part of the latch, and in which form I prefer to manufacture it, due to its relative simplicity and economy, it will be understood that the device may, if desired, be formed separately from the latch either for direct attachment upon an ordinary latch, or for attachment upon a door independently of the latch.
I have illustrated and described a preferred and satisfactory embodiment of my invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein within the spirit and scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a closure and its jamb provided with a locking bolt and a keeper, of cooperating parts separate and distinct from said locking bolt and keeper, said cooperating parts adapted to slide with respect the one to the other in one relation to permit a limited opening of the closure and adapted to interlock together in a sec ond relation when the closure approaches a shut position in the j amb, and means to cause cooperating parts to assume the interlocking relation automatically when the closure approaches the shut position.
- 2. In combination with a closure and its amb, of a cooperating arm and rod thereon relative movable, said arm having an opening tierein to slidingly receive the rod, said 0; ening provided with a restricted entrance, saic rod having a flat portion at one end to 'ough the entrance and a shoulder the flat portion, and means for tieally causing said shoulder to project in the path of the sides to the entrance Oi said opening. In combination with a closure and its amb, of a cooperating rigid arm and swinging rod carried thereby, said arm and rod adapted to slide relatively when in one position to permit the closure to be opened a limited degree and adapted to bind to ether when in a second relation to hold the closure substan-"ally shut, and means to automatica w swing the rod to the last-named relation with the arm when the closure approaches the shut position.
4;. In combination with a closure and its jamb provided with locking parts comprising a bolt and its keeper, of an arm on one of the locking parts arranged to overlie the other loclnng part and provided with an opening therein and a restricted entrance to the opening, a rod pivoted on the other lock' part and having fiat t'aces adjacent its .0 end of a size to be received through the r stricted entrance to the opening in said arm, said rod being of a size to slide through the opening and having an enlarged portion on its free end to engage the walls of the arm about the opening, and resilient means carried by one of the locking parts and effectively engaged with the pivot end of said rod whereby when the door approaches a closed position the rod will be automatically swung to cause the flat faces to move into the restricted en rance to the opening in said arm, said rod provided with a shoulder adjacent the fiat faces to encounter the side Walls of the entrance.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name hereunder.
