Hank Wesib e/d INVENTOR M narra e STATES PATENT orrics.
FRANK WESTBELD, QF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
UMBRELLA.
' f Application filed April 30,
To an whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK WEs'rBnLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the countycof Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to umbrellas and it has for its main object to provide means for when closed up, together with rigidity of formation when open.
Still further the invention has for an ob ject to provide an umbrella frame which is extremely simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and not liable to get out of order when used under abnormal conditions.
With these objects in view my invention consists essentially in the provision of additional stay members having hinged connections at their outer ends with the ordinary ribs near their outer parts and at their inner ends similarly attached to a collar or ring slidably mounted on the umbrella stick between the usual runner and the fixed collar at or near the lower end of said umbrella stick.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings constituting a part of this specification and in which similar charactersof reference designate the same or like parts in all the views.
Figure 1- is an inside or plan view of an open umbrella embodying my improvements and with the handle broken away or removed for the sake of clearness.
Fig. 2- is a fragmentary sectional viewof the same and drawn to an enlarged scale for the sake of clearness. V
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail plan of the connection of the additional stay members or braces to the ordinary ribs; and,
Fig. l is an enlarged detail plan of the connection of the additional stay members or braces to the slidable collar or ring.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 designates the umbrella stick or cane, 11 the ordinary ribs which are hinged at their in- .920. Serial No. 377,928.
ner ends to the-fixed collar 12 near the outer or lower end ofsaid cane or stick 10 in the usual well known manner, and 13 are the ordinary braces which are connected or pivoted to the ribs 11, at let and similarly at tached tojthe usual slidable runner 15, and 16 is the cover which may be of any of the well known materials known to the trade. ;Upon the stick or canelO, between the. runner 15 and fixed collar 12,31 slidably ferentially grooved at 18. for the pivotal connection of a plurality of supplemental bracing. members. 19 in number equal to twice thatof the customary ribsll; that is tosay there are attached midway between each pair of ribs 11 two of the supplemental Specification of Iietters Patent. Patented Mar, 1 1921.
'mount a collar or sleeve 17 which iscircumbracing members 19. -These supplemental bracing members 19, are preferably made of very thin strip steel or other appropriate material, and each pair of said members 19 are braced or bonded together at 20 by a clip or clips 21, the outer ends then being separated Y fashion as shown. The outer ends I 8O of each converging and adjoining pair of Y fashion supplemental braces are then brought together and connected or pivoted at 22, to the afo-resaidribs, 11, at points beyond the connection 14: of the braces .13 thereto, that is to say at or near the outer ends thereof. I
'Now it will be readily seen from the foregoing description that when the umbrella is open each Y fashion supplemental brace support 19 is connected to adjoining ribs 11, at 22, thereby preventing any angular dis placement thereof, while the sleeve 17 has slid or moved inward into abutment with the runner15 which is, or maybe, locked to the stick or cane 10, in the well known way;
and constitute no impediment tothe neatness or compactness of the umbrella when I 'bythe slidable sleeve 17 whereby the entire frame is strongly and securely braced under all conditions and more especially so when the umbrella is exposed, to violent weather conditions. Furthermore an ulnbrella embodying the foregoing improvements can be quickly opened or closed even when wet without any danger of interlock ing, twisting or fracture of any of the partseventualities common to most urn-- brellas as heretofore constructed. 7
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to' secure by Letters Patent is The combination with an umbrella stick" provided with a collar at its outer end, ribs pivotally connected to the said collar of the stick, braces-pivoted to the ribs, a runner on said stick to which said braces are pivotally connected, and latching means for the runner, of bracing and reinforcing means between the stlck and ribs, comprising a notched sleeve arranged for slidable movement on the stick below said collar,
with the sleeve and holding said strips in 1 contacting relation, said pairs of strips,
from the outer clips being bent at opposite angles and extended toward the ends of the ribs/the adjacent strips of each pair having their free ends pivotally connected each to one of the ribs adjacent to the outer ends of the said ribs, and the spread ribs of the respective pairs being arranged between each pairof strips and braces for theribs and also each pair of strips that have their ends connected to the ribs adapted to receive the ribs and braces therebetween.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
