To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HANS WAGNER, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at Ludwigsburg, in the Kingdom of WVurttemberg, Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to umbrellas of that type which increases the amount of shelter aflorded by providing the umbrella with a stick or support off-set a distance from the center of the umbrella.

The object of the present invention is to provide an efficient and very simple device for strengthening and bracing the frame to prevent the tilting of the umbrella frame relative to the umbrella stick.

To this end I provide flexible stays extending from the frame of the umbrella to the oif-set portion of the stick.

Referring to the drawing, which shows, by way of example, a form of the invention, Figure 1 is a side view of one form of the umbrella, open, with the cover cut away; Fig. 2 is a similar view of another form of the invention, and Fig. 3 is a view of the umbrella of Fig. 1, but partly closed.

The umbrella stick consists of the handle portion a and a portion 7) which proceeds to the umbrella point and carries in the ordinary way a framework 0 and a cover cl. The handle portion a of the stick can be displaced from the center of the umbrella in an already known manner, and is connected with the portion b of the stick by a tubular or channel link 6. The connecting pins f engage in longitudinal slots 9 in the link e and move in these slots when the umbrella is opened and closed. In closing, the ends of the two parts a and .7) are inserted in the sleeve 6. The ribs of the umbrella are held open by the stays, or Spreaders, pivoted to the usual runner. Bands or the like are employed as stifieners h. These bands are secured on both sides of the stick a to the ribs 0 and also are loosely connected with the stick, the extended end 76 of which is inserted in a slot in one of the ribs 0. The

hands it may also be fixed to the ribs over which the cover is stretched (Fig. 1) or to those parts which serve for stiffening the ribs (Fig. 2). The free ends of the bands h are provided with a ring Z or the like, which slides on the stick a and when the umbrella is open are pushed over theordinary spring catch m in the stick a and hold thereto, so that the entire umbrella is thereby also stiffened laterally to the plane of the struts. When the umbrella is to be folded up the ring Z is first pushed over the spring catch at (Fig. 5) and then the umbrella collapsed as usual.

Instead of releasably connecting the bands It or the like with the stick a and fastening them to the ribs, the arrangement may also be reversed and the bands be releasably connected with the ribs and attached to the stick. The bands or the like may also be firmly connected both with the stick and with the ribs, and the stiffening in this case when the umbrella is opened is obtained by shortening or otherwise tightening the bands.

I declare that what I claim is 1. In an umbrella, the combination of a divided umbrella stick having an upper portion and a handle portion adapted to be offset from each other; an umbrella frame-work adapted to be entirely supported on said upper portion; flexible members extending from said lower portion to said framework and lying outside of and on both sides of the plane determined by said portions; and means for holding said stays tightened and adapted to permit the stays to be slackened.

In an umbrella, the combination of an umbrella stick comprising upper and handle portions adapted to be disposed off-set and parallel to each other; a runner adapted to be held on said upper portion, ribs pivoted to the upper part of said upper portion; stays pivoted at opposite ends to said ribs and runner respectively; and flexible members connected at their ends to said lower portion and at their upper ends to said upper portion and disposed on respectively opposite sides of the plane determined by said upper and lower portions.
