Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
Application filed September 4, 1919. Serial No. 321,610.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RAYMOND E. MOTH- MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pleasant Hill, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Closers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a door closer and is more particularly adapted for use in connection with screen doors.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be readily attached to doors of ordinary construction and effectively operate the same.
Another object resides in the provision of a device provided with a spring which will be placed under tension when the door is open so as to automatically close the door when released.
lVith these and other objects in view my invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more clearly understood from the following specification and drawings in which:-
Figure 1 is a front elevation.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the door showing a top plan of my attachment, and,
Fig. 3 is a fragmental vertical section showing a portion of my invention in end elevation.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates the door frame of usual construction and 2 the door which is hingedly connected to the frame at 3. The door is of usual construction but is preferably formed with a cross piece 4 as illustrated more particularly 'in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
My door closer comprises a plate 5 which is preferably of the shape illustrated in Fig. 1 and is provided with a longitudinal extension 6 which is adapted to extend along the cross rail 4 as shown. The plate is secured to the door by means of screws 7 or other suitable fastening means. An ear 8 is formed adjacent the upper edge of the plate and extends at right angles thereto and a similar ear 9 is formed on the bottom edge of the plate. Each of these ears 8 and 9 is provided with a central opening to receive the end of a pin or rod 10 which is rotatably mounted therein. T he pin or rod 10 is formed with a longitudinal extension 11 the outer end of which is bent at right angles as shown at 12 and provided with an opening for a purpose to be later described.
This longitudinal extension 11 is preferably of less length than the extension 6 on the plate 5 and is also preferably of less width. An eye 13 is secured to the door frame 1 adjacent the hinged end of the door and a rod 14 has one end engaging in the eye 13 and the opposite end is formed in an eye 15 which engages through the opening formed in the right angle extension 12 of the extension 11 on the pin or bolt 10. As more particularly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings the extension 11 and the rod 14 will lie parallel when the door is in closed position.
A coiled spring 16 surrounds the pin or bolt 10 intermediate the ear 8 and longitudinal extension 11. The upper end 17 of the spring engages the face of the plate 5 adjacent the ear 8 and the lower end 18 of the spring is engaged with the horizontal extension 11 of the bolt intermediate the ends thereof.
From the above detailed description it is thought that the construction and manner of using my attachment will be clearly understood. When the door is closed the several parts will be in the position illustrated in the drawings but when the door is open the longitudinal extension 11 will swing with the pin or bolt 10 and the rod 14 will pivot in the eye 13. The coiled spring 16 will be put under tension so that when the door is released it will be automatically closed.
It will be found that I have provided an attachment which may be connected to doors of usual construction and while I have illustrated the attachment as applied to a screen door it will be understood that it might just as well be used with other doors.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be considered the preferred, or approved, form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, etc., as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
thereto, a rod pivotally connected to the right angled extension and adapted to normally extend parallel and adjacent to said horizontal extension, and means provided upon said bolt for normally holding said longitudinal extension, horizontal extension, and rod in parallel position with each other. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
