IMPROVEMENT IN PLATFORM-CARRIERS FOR ENDLESS RAILWAYS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,054, dated February 18, 1873.

To all whom it may oort'cern:

Be it known that I, J EssE FRYE, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certainvnovel and useful series of Platform-Carriers, united together so as to form oneendless-jointed platforin to operate upon a series of endless-rolling gear-wheels upon an endless rail or tramway; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accoinpanyingdrawin g," which is lettered to correspond with and form; a part of the specification; and to enable'the public to understand the nature of my said invention, and those who are skilled in the art of civil engineering to construct and operate the same, I will describe it, as follows, to wit: 7

Figure l is an obliquetop and front elevation of a section of the two divisions E E of my endless sectional platforms united together, to be operated upon the larger periphery of the gearing-wheels W W, whose smaller bearings revolve upon the endless railway T T, which rests upon'the an gle-iron ties V. These platforms are made in sections twelve feet long, and are united at the ends by universal or knuckle joints in the ends of the longitudinal stiffening rib or bar running the entire length of each section upon the under side thereof. Each section of my endless platform E E is also provided, upon the under side thereof, with light steel angle-rails with the flanges downward, so that the outer or larger bearingsof the roiling'gear wheels W W receive the platform .upon the inside ofthe vertical flanges of the angle rails a a, (see Fig. 2,)

are the rolling gear-wheels with their two bearings. T T are vertical sections of the endless Wooden tracks, secured to the angleiron ties V.

The novelty ofthis invention consists in an endless series of short sections of moving platforms, E E, united so as to form one endlessjointe-d platform to overcome the sinuosities of the roadway, and provided with an gle-iron or other ways, a n, Fig. 2, to hold the platform upon the larger periphery of wheels W W while being propelled with the cars upon it at a. four or more fold speed by stationary engines, with driving toothed wheels arranged under the roadway to operate the wheels W W by means of the transverse arms a a a a, which are a part of the longitudinal guide-bar It; therefore,

What I claim as new and useful, and wish to protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. The platforms E E, united by universal or knuckle joints to form an endless-platform carrier, operating upon the outer bearing or larger periphery of the wheels W W by means of the transverse arms a a, which pass through and form a part of the longitudinal guide-bar R, for the purpose, and in the manner as above set forth. 7

2. Angle or equivalent rails upon the under side of each section of the endless platform E E to keep the same upon the top of the wheels W W, substantially as above described, and shown in the drawing.
