' LEONARD M. LANNING, or wALLA .wALLe, WASHINGTON,
PIrE-LooK.
To all whom it may concern: I
I Be it known that I, Lnoni nn M. LANNING, a citizen of the United States, residin at Walla Walla, in the county of l ialla ll alla and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
which yieldingly locks in a manner to pro-f vide compensation for expansion and con--- traction. due to varying temperatures.
With these and other objects in view refer ence is had to the accompanying drawings in whichi L Figure 1 shows theapplication of the device on a pipeinserted into a large opening;
Fig. 2 shows the pipe inserted into an opening of correct size;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a modified form of draw bar; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the modified form of drawbar;
Fig. a shows a string of pipe supported from below 7 bar;
Fig. 5 shows the device attached to the in terior. of the pipe; I
Fig. 6 shows an end elevation of the draw- Fig. 7 shows a side elevation of the draw bar 8 is a plan view of the draw bar; Fig. 9 is a side elevation of the spring lock;
and
Fig. 10 is a plan view of the spring lock.
In the drawings like numerals refer to like I parts throughout and the numeral 1 refers to the pipe which, as shown in the drawings is represented as stove pipe although it must be understood that the device is equally applicable to any suspended pipe.
2 represents a section of flue having the usual opening 3 into which the pipe is to be locked by means of the draw bar 4: and the lock 5.
The draw bar consists of a hook portion 6 and a shank portion 7, the shank portion being bent as at 8 Fig. 7 to produce a snug relates to pipe locks and Specification of Letters Patent. 23, 1920; Application filed January 22, 1920. Serial No. 353,178. I
which a latch, to be described, seats for the g locking purpose. I
'Inthe end of the shank barbs 10 are provided which'are intended toiengage the edge 11' of the slot'12 through which the shank projects, to prevent accidental "removal of the drawbar while placing :orremoving the i i A guide :rneinb erv 13 is attachedtothe inner side of the. pipe and slidablyfimounts the draw bardand is positioned in the pipe in a manner to cover the slot 12 to prevent a smoke leak therethrough. l
ttached to the pipe, and positioned therei I on to'coeperatingly engagethedraw'zbar, 1
the lock 5 consisting of a'plate 14 which-car'- ries lugs 15 which in turn'bear the crankarm 16 journaled therein." Atongue l7 is 'jour-;
naled on the crank a'rm and engagesa spring I 18 which is' interp'osed between the'tongue.
and the latch 19, the latch having a bent end I v r 20 which seats into the aforementioned apere tures 9 of the draw bar. I
It will be noted by reference to Fig. 9 that i the crank'arm 16 is journaled in the lugs 15v ofi center so that when the tongue 17. is
brought down to the locked position there will be no danger of the accidental unlocking of the device.
Fig. 3 shows a modifiedform of draw.
'90 7* for use on the pipe directly inwhich case the pipe, to which the draw bar is attached, v I
becomes in a mannerthe sliding member 'of the draw bar, the pipe being drawn upon the adjoining pipe by means of the lock;
Thislock, through the mediumof the spring, provides a yielding pressure on the draw bar and thus as the expansion and contraction occurs, due to the varying temperature, the pull remains constant andthe joint. is constantly maintained in its tightest position.
It is shown by reference to Figs. 1 and 2 that the"hook portion 6 of thedraw bar j i i is of suflicientlength to engage the inner wall of the flue whether the hole 3 is or is not of the proper size, thus-regardless of the size'of the hole a secure lock is obtained thereon.
In the case of long strings of pipe as shown in Fig. A: the lock will be placed beneath the pipe thus forming asuspension.
joint of sufiicient strength to maintain a rigid string; and as shown in Fig. 5 the lock may be installed within the pipe with equal efiiciency; in this case however the slot 12 will be omitted and the guide member may also have the slight modification shown in Fig. 5.
In use the lock 5 and the drawbar 7* is riveted or otherwise fastened to the pipe previous to erection, and the draw bar 7 is placed in the guide member, the barb 10 snapping past the edge 11 of the slot 12. The flue joint is now inserted and locked in place and thecollar 21 brought to position against the wall of the chimney. The elbow 22 (or I16 Xi3 0l11l3) is now applied and locked and thus throughout the assembling a joint is added and locked until the work is completed. V
In the case of the locks being within the .pipe the locking is accomplished by inserting the arm and performing the locking operation therein. 7 v
Having thus described my invention, I
claim- I 1. In a pipe lock, a draw bar, and. a lock composed of a plate, lugs extending upward from said plate, a crank arm pivotally mounted in said lugs, a tongue journale d on said crank arm and engaging a spring, a latch, a spring interposed between said tongue and said latch, said lock attached to the pipe and positioned thereon to cooperatingly engage said draw bar.
2. In a pipe lock, a draw bar, said draw bar consisting of a hook portion and a shank portion, a guide member attached to said pipe and slidably mounting said draw bar, and a lock composed of a plate, lugs extending upward from said plate, a crank arm 'pivotally mounted on said lugs, a tongue ournaled in said crankarm and engaging a spring, a latch, a spring interposed between said tongue and said lctch, said look at-. tached to the pipe and positioned thereon to oooperatingly engage said draw bar.
3. In a pipe look, a draw .bar, said draw bar consisting of a hook portion and .a shank portion, a guide nien'iber attached to said.
pipe and slidably mounting said draw bar, a slot in said pipe through whichsaid shank portion projects, said guide member being positioned in said pipe to cover said slot,
and a look attached to the pipe and posisitioned thereon to cooperatingly engage said draw bar. 7,
In testimony whereof I affixmy signature.
LEONARD M. VLANYNING.
