Be it known that I, MARCUS B. BEHRMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seals, of which the followin is a specification.

l y invention relates to an improved seal adapted to fasten a tag or similar object to a support.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a fastener for connecting and irremovably securing a tag to an article.

Another object is to provide a fastener which can be readily applied without a tool and which cannot be removed except by mutilation of its parts.

A further object is to provide a fastener of simple, efficient," and durable construction which is inexpensive to manufacture and to assemble.

The invention is particularly designed t afford simple and effective means for detecting unauthorized use of an article and thereby to prevent the abuse of trade which results from persons returning articles for credit or exchange after the articles have been used or worn.

To these ends, as well as to attain other objects not specifically mentioned, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

The fastener consists of a casing made of a single piece of sheet metal, or other suitable material, and a flexible shackle having a rigid tip at each end which tips are adapted to be received in the casing and to be Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NO 23, 1920,

irremovably engaged therein, so that when the fastener is secured to an article it cannot be detached except by cutting the shackle or mutilating the casing.

The'casing is made from a blank of the character indicated in Fig. 5 having integral portions 1 and 2 which constitute the front and rear walls of the casing. Upturned flanges 3' and 4 are formed around the portions 1 and 2 of the blank, the flange 3 being adapted to fit into the flange 4 when the blank is bent to form the casing, as shown in Fig. 3', and the marginal edge of the flange 4 being bent or spun over, as seen in Fig. 4, to interlock the parts. A small opening or eyelet 5 is formed through the connecting portion between the parts 1 and 2 of the blank, which connecting portion constitutes the top of the completed casing. The flexible shackle 6 consists of apiece of string, wire, or other suitable material, and it has a rigid tip 7 at each end. The tips are secured to the shackle in such manner as 'to extend transversely tothe shackle and to straddle the opening when they are inserted in the casin The tips are of such size and shape that t ey can be inserted, in one position, through the opening in the casing and that they cannot be withdrawn after insertion.

In practice it is usual to ship the fasteners from the factory with one end of the tie inserted in the casing. Now when it is desired to attach a tag to an article it is merely necessary to affix the free end of the tie to the bag 8 and the article 9 and then insert it into the casing.

It will be understood that the casing may be made in various different sizes and shapes and that if desired it may be made of two or more pieces instead of being made in one piece.

.Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. A seal comprising front and rear walls and an integral connecting portion having an entrance aperture, said wallshaving flanges which fit one within the other and are secured together to form a closed hollow casing, and a flexible shackle having a rigid tip secured to each end at a point intermediate the tip ends, said tips being longer than the greatest width of the entrance aperture and being adapted to be inserted endwise through the aperture and to straddle the aperture when inserted in the casing whereby to prevent withdrawal.

2. A seal composed of a piece of material bent to form a closed hollow casing having an entrance aperture, and a flexibleshackle having a rigid tip secured to each end at a point intermediate the tip ends, said tips being longer than the greatest width of the entrance aperture and being adapted to be inserted-endwise through the aperture and to straddle the aperture when inserted inthe casing whereby to prevent withdrawal.

3. A seal comprising a closed hollow casing consisting of a single piece of material formed with front and rear walls provided with flanged portions. constituting the side wall, the edge of one of the flanged portions being bent over to lock the parts together, said casing having an entrance aperture at the top, and a flexible shackle having a rigid tip secured to each end at a point intermediate the tip ends, said tips being longer than the greatest width of the entrance aperture and being adapted to be inserted endwise through the aperture to straddle the aperture when inserted in the casing-whereby to prevent withdrawal.
