CHARLES F. LEFEVER, OF PLYMOUTH, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO DAISY MANUFAC- TURING COMPANY, OF PLYMOUTH, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
LEVER-ARM FOR GUNS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
Application filed June 4, 1920. Serial No. 386,430.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. LnrEvnR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Plymouth, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lever-Arms for Guns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to a construction of lever arms for guns and more particularly for spring air guns and it is the object of the invention to obtain a construction formed of reinforced sheet metal, as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the sheet metal blank from which the lever arm is formed;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the blank after the forming and reinforcing of the same;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lever iLTIHl slightly modified in construction from Figs. 4:, 5 and 6 are cross sections respectively on lines 44E, 55 and 6-6 of Fig. 2.
In the construction of spring air guns one type employs a lever for placing the spring under compression when the gun is loaded. This lever is suitably fashioned to cooperate with the stock and frame of the gun and is usually formed of a malleable casting. With the present invention I have substituted a sheet metal stamping for the casting, which is used in cooperation with a rod reinforcement to form a lever of the desired contour.
In detail, A is a sheet metal blank which is bent into a U-shaped cross section and is simultaneously otherwise fashioned to the form shown in Figs. 2 and 3. As shown in Fig. 4, a portion B of the blank is left of the of the U cross-section, so as to form an in- Wardly opening channel for engagement with the cooperating parts of the mechanism. This portion also is provided with the apertures C in the sides thereof for the passage of a fulcrum pin. Beyond the por" tion B is a portion D, in which the blank is closed in to form a complete section and beyond the portion D is a portion E which is reinforced. This reinforcement is prefer ably formed of a round rod F, suitably fashioned and placed in engagement with the blank after the first U-ing operation, being secured by the bending in of the flanges, as shown in Fig. 6. IVith the construction shown in Fig. 2 the reinforcement F is return-bent at its outer end and at its inner end is bent into an S-shaped form suitable for engagement with the stock of the gun. In Fig. 3 the reinforcement is bent to form a complete loop, as indicated at F, but is secured in the same manner.
At the points where the reinforcement passes out from engagement with the sheet metal, the latter is enlarged to form rounded nipples G and these serve to additionally strengthen the structure.
hat I claim as my invention is:
1. A lever for guns comprising a sheet metal blank pressed to form a portion of open U-shaped cross section, and a portion of closed hollow cross section, and a rod forming a reinforcement for said closed section.
2. A lever for guns comprising a sheet metal blankhaving a portion formed into an open U-shaped cross section, and adjacent portions formed into a hollow closed section, and a reinforcement formed of a rod filling said closed hollow section and extending outward laterally of the lever.
3. A lever for guns comprising a sheet metal blank fashioned. to form a portion of open chanel or U-shaped cross section, a portion of closed hollow cross section, and a reinforcement formed of a rod for filling a portion of the closed hollow cross section, the end portions of said rod prejecting laterally, and rounded nipples formed on said blank for surrounding the outwardly projecting portions of said rod.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CHARLES F. LEFEVER.
