Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1920.
Application filed November 24, 1919. Serial No. 340,310.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT H. CAIfPlfiN-TER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful I m provements in Adjustable Qlamps, of whlch the following is a specification.
This invention has particular application to a novel form of clamp.'
The primary object of the invention resides in providing a clamp embodymg a plurality of detachable and interchangeable sections which permits the component parts of the clamp to be separated and conveniently arranged in a, tool box, or the parts assembled in a manner whereby a clamp of an desired length can be produced.
The nature and advantages of the mvention will be better understood when the following detail description is taken in connection with the accompanying drawlngs, the invention residing in the construction,
combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference indlcate similar parts in the several views and wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clamp constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a. longitudinal sectional vlew taken through the connector.
Fig. 5 is an edge view of one of the jaws of the clamp.
The clamp forming the subject matter of: my invention embodies a number of beams 10 which vary in length, but each of wh ch is provided along its longitudinal edges w th notches 11, the notches of the respect ve edges being disposed in staggered relation relatively. As shown in Fig. 1 any number of these sections may be arranged in end to end relation and joined together by the connector as shown. This connector comprises a casing 13 having spaced side walls 14 between which the adjacent ends of the beam are arranged. Connecting the spaced side walls are pins 15 which are arranged in pairs at opposite sides of the vertical center of the connector, the pins 15 being adapted to be received within the adjacent notches of the opposed longitudinal edges of said beams. Carried by one of the beams is a fixed jaw 16 of usual construction supporting an adjusting screw 17. The jaw 16 is bifurcated as at 18, and supports the spaced pins 19 which are adapted to be positioned within the adjacent notches at the opposite longitudinal edges of the beam. The jaw 16 is thus detachably mounted upon the beam. It will be noted that the opposite ends of each beam is provided with spaced notches 20 to permit either end of the beam to be associated with the connector 13 or jaw 16. Slidably mounted upon the other beam shown in Fig. l, is a jaw 21, which is of any suitable construction. By reason of the constructiondisclosed, it is apparent that a clamp of any desired length may be very quickly and easily produced so that when the clamp is applied to the work there will not be any surplus portion of the clamp projecting beyond the work which sometunes causes injury to the workman, and
which is continually in the way. In the use of the clamp, the proper adjustment can be made between the respective jaws 16 and 21. Upon reference to Fig. 1, this may be accomplished by moving the jaw 21 to the proper position upon its beam, or the jaw 16 can be adjusted longitudinally of the beam supporting it.
1 While I have shown and described what I consider the preferred embodiment of the invention, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts disclosed, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the s co e of what is claimed.
aving thus described my invention what I claim as new is A clamp of the character described comprising a plurality of beams arranged end to end, each beam having notches in its opposed longitudinal edges, with the notches in one edge being staggered with relation to the notches in the other edge, a substantially I U-shaped member forming a connector for the-adjacent ends of said beams, spaced pairs o'fpins carried by saidme-mber, one
5 pair of said pins being provided for each beam and diagonally disposed to be received Within the adjacent notches in the opposed
