Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. All". 17, 1920.
Application filed November 24, 1919. Serial No. 340,087.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, (lunsrrnn L. VILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residin at Chapin, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful ln'iprovenients in (late-Hinges; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will r-znahle others skilled in the art to which appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in gate hinges, and it has more particular refcrenra: to a in rm gate hinge, although it is not to be restricted to such use.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a hinge which is exceedingly simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, yet highly efficient in use, the construction being such that it can be adjusted to posts of various diameters, and when in position on the posts, may be moved vertically thereon to any desired point by simply loosening the bolt which holds it in position on the posts.
Other objects and advantages may become apparent during the course of the following description.
in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like :munerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion oil a gate and its post illustrating the application oli my device.
l ig. J is a transverse section on the plane of line 2 2 oi l ig. 1.
l ig. Z.- is an enlarged detail perspective v icw of the post engaging plate.
in the drawing, wherein for the purpose oi illustration is shown a preferred embodimont of my invention, the letter P desig 11 a post to which my improved device 'lastemad and the letter G designates the gate which it serves to support. As both of the devices are alike and as each one is of the same construction, I will describe only one of them, it being understood that while portions of the description appear in the singular it is intended to cover all like parts.
hly. invention resides in the provision of a substantially flexible member which surrounds the post 1 The device consists mainly of three parts, viz; an attacliiing plate 1, a plurality of filling links 2, and a pair of substantially L-shaped plates or connecting link 3. Plate 1 is made of metal and reduced. in width at its opposite ends to provide a pair oil. relatively wide hooks 4L, the purpose of which will hereinafter be set forth. In addition to the hooks 4: this plate is also provided at the center of its lower edge with a depending tongue 5 which bears against the post i. and acts as a ln'ace, thereby preventing sagging of the gate. (last integral with, or secured to the plate in any other suitable manner, is a pintle 6 which (Jo-acts with thehinge member 7 cz'trried by the gate, and permits the gate to revolve thereon, as is obvious. If desired this pintle (5 may be provided with a shoulder 8 to form a bearing for the hinge members 7. As betore stated, the device includes a series or links 2 which in this instance are merely in the form of sprocket chain links, and each link'is made of malleable iron and is provided at one of its ends with a relatively wide hook l) which engages another link of the series. This construction will permit the links to he readily detached for the removal or insertion of other links to adapt the device to posts of various diameters. In use, any number 01'. links may be cm iloyed according to the diameter of the posts to which they are attached. Two of these links 2 are connected at one of their ends to the hooks 4 of ;he attaching plate 1, and, as before stated, the opposite hooked ends thereof engage another link of the series. In order to secure the free ends of the end links together I employ a pair of L-shaped slotted cm'niccting plates El and the hooks 9 of the links E2 are received in said slots. hen in position on the post the L-shaped plates are secured together hy means oi? a holt 1.0 which extends through the apertures Formed at one end thereof. With the above con struction it will he seen that a chain-like structure will. he had, and the pz'trt'icular ad vantage oi. this corstructirm that the device will conform to the shape of the post more so than it all the parts were rigidly connected together, thereby adapting the device for use on. posts of different shapes. All of the parts are so constructed that they may be readily detached from one another thereby permitting the device to set For use on. posts of diflerent diameters. l Vhen the device is in position on the post and it is desired to move it vertically thereon it will be only necessary to loosen the bolt theredevice is thought by permitting the device to be readily moved to the desired point, and then by tightening the bolt again the device will be clamped tightly in position. One of the main features of the invention, and one oi the points which I desire to emphasize is the fact that the plate 1 is so constructed that it will prevent sagging of the gate to any great extent. This is due to the fact that it, is provided with the depending tongue 5 which bears against'the post and serves to brace the plate, and in turn prevents sagging of the ate which is carried thereby.
The manner or" using and assembling my to be obvious from the foregoing description, a further description is therefore deemed unnecessary,
lVith the device the above mentioned type it will be seen that it is not necessary to employ nails or bolts to fasten it to the post thereby preventing formation of holes in the posts which might weaken the posts and also detract from the appearance of the post.
I claim:
A gate hinge ei'nnpriaing a llat metal hinge carrying plate having its opposite eals reduced in width and bent to forln relatively wide hooks and being provided at the center of its bottom edge with a depending tongue to bear against the post and prevent possible sagging of the gate, pair of rectangular open links made of malleable iron and having one of their ends disposed in said hooks, each link being provided at its opposite end with a hook of the HUNG width as the first named hooks, additional reetangular open links atiaelnyd to the rimond named hooks, these links being likewise provided at their opposite ends with like hooks, a pair of L-shz ped connecting plains. each having a slot at one end for iwoptloll of one of the last named hooks and being apertured at their opposite ends. and a bolt passing through said apertures to retain the connecting plates together.
In testimony whereol l have hereunto set my hand.
