PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD E. CO'UCHE AND FRED E. COOK, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
SAFETY BRACKET FOR LADDERS.
Application filed November 10, 1924. Serial No. 749,052.
T (171/ whom it may roncern:
Be it known that Enwaun E. CoUorIn and FRED E. Coon, citizens of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of 6 Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain useful Improvements in Safety Brackets for Ladders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. 1 The object of the invention is to provide a device for use'particularly in connection with painters ladders, whereby the same, when in use, may be securely held against side deflection or slipping when the ladder is disposed against a wall or'the side of a house.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this character which will secure the ladder adjacent the upper end and at the same time space the upper end from the wall so that the painter or other artisan may mount the ladder to a greater height than ordinarily.
It is still further the purpose to provide a device which will have a minimum area of bearing on the wall or house side and thus reduce to a minimum the likelihood ofmarring the painted wall or house side where it bears on the latter.
With these general objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the application of the invention to the ladder of a painter or other workman.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device detached. 7
The bracket is made preferably of sheet metal, the body portion 1 being of a length to span transversely the ladder with which it is connected, such as that shown at 2 in Figure 1. The body portion terminates 45 in tapered extremities 3 and isform'ed adjacent said extremities with lateral extensions 1 adapted to'rest on the inner face of the side bars or uprights 0f the ladder, the tapered extremities being deflected away from the plane of the body portion to ,dispose them in divergent relation, as indicated .in Figure 2, so that the pointed ends of the tapered portions may bear upon the wall or side of a house, as indicated at 5 in Figure 1.
\Vith the tapered portions or arms 3 arranged in divergent relation as shown, their extremities bear on the wall at points without the vertical planes of the side bars of the ladder and thus preclude the same turning sidewise, while the pointed extremities engage in the wall and prevent lateral movement of the ladder at the top. At the same time, the arms space the upper extremity of the ladder from the wall sothat it may be mounted to a greater height by the artisan than is ordinarily the case.
p The bracket may be secured to the ladder by any acceptable means, the preferred form being J-bolts 6' which span the outer edges of the sidebars 0f the ladder, the
threaded extremities or shanks passing through the body portion 1 adjacent the lat eral extensions 4 and receiving wing nuts 7 between which and the body portion are interposed washers S. The wing nuts serve as means to clamp the J-bolts into firm engagement with the side bars of the ladder and to secure the bracket to the same.
The invention having been described, what is claimed as new and useful is:
A ladder attachment comprising a body strip provided at its ends with angularly disposed extensions and having pointed prongs located between the ends of the said extensions and at the outer edges thereof, the body strip being further provided adjacent the angular extensions with longitudinally disposed slots, hook bolts having their shanks passing through the slots and their bill ends disposed opposite the inter mediate portions of the extensions, and means for securing the hook belts with relation to the body strip.
In testimony whereof they affix their sig natures.
EDWARD E. COUCHE. FRED E. COOK.
