Be it known that I, FRED L. MANNY, a citizen ol the United States, residing at Benton ll' arbor, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Binders, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates to binders designed to hold bodies of unconnected perforated sheets in the form et ledgers or account books of any sort of the loose leaf type. The object of my invention is to provide a simple and elliective locking mechanism, housed in a hollow binding plate member hinged to one ol the covers of the binder, for attaching such binding plate and cover olf the binder structure to'posts carried by a cooperating plate hingedly connected with the other cover. My invention consists in the` coinbii'iatioi'i, arrangement and organization of cooperating parts making up and associated with this locking mechanism, the essential elements of which will be more particularly pointed out in the appen ded claims.

The covers 1 oi' the binder, formed et any suitable material, as for instance a strong compact liber board, are flexibly connected by hinge plates 2 with the strips 3, each of which forms part of a hollow casing constituting a post plate or binding plate member, both binding plates being for symmetry et appearance and convenience oi construction formed alike, and one of them being arranged to house the locking mechanism hereinafter described. These casings or binding plates each comprise the strip 3, a plate 1 spot-welded thereto and formed with flanges d outwardly bent or Specification of Letters Patent.

The plates 3, et and 5 of the ripper binding plate member are formed with registering orifices te receive the posts G, the tip portions of which project above and beyond the top cover 1, as shown in Fig. 2. Preferably the top binding plate is also equipped with posts (la (see Fig. 1), these posts, however, being made shorter than the posts G, so that they will only eX- tend to or near the imperiiorate cover plate 5 oi" the lower binding plate. In the practical use of the binder the proper length of the posts 6 and 6a is attained by employing such number ot intermediate sections be tween the base and tip oi the different posts as may be needed.

outer portion l() of a screw rod 11, which, at its inner end makes threaded engagement with the threaded bore of the rod 9 and at its outer end is formed with a squared shank 12 adapted to receive a key by which it may be turned. An extension 13 et' the block 7 is formed with lugs 11 arranged on opposite sides of a stop lug 15 secured to the plate 4, a small coiled spring 16 between the stop and one of the lugs serving to yieldingly urge the block 7 out of engagement with the adjacent post 6. The narrow edge of the block 8 is arranged between a pair of stop lugs 17 secured to the plate 4 and a small coiled compression spring 18 seated in a socket in such block and bearing against oneof said lugs yieldingly tends to urge the block away from engagement with its adjacent post 6. It can readily be seen that by turning the operating key to draw the rods 9 and 11 together the inclined faces 7a and 8? of the blocks 7 and 8 will impinge against springs 15- and 18 will react against the blocks to shift them out of contact with the posts, thelugs 14 and 17 acting as stops to restrain excess movement and thus release the posts from locked engagement. i
To provide a Vneat and sightly finish shouldered corner blocks 19 are provided,
such blocks being secured in place by screws 20 passing through the plates 3 and 4 and holding the cover plates 5 in place. The particular block 19 adjacent the screw rod 11 is lchanneled to receive the outer end ofsuch rod', and permit insertion of the key for turning it.
l claim:
1. In a binder equipped with a pair of posts, post-engaging means comprising a plate'member formed with a longitudinal l face adapted to receive a lateral thrust, a
clamping block arranged to slidingly engage said face of said plate and formed with an inclined face, said block being provided with a stem having a hollow, internallytlireaded inner end, a screw rod having a threaded inner .end engaging said stem and formed with a shoulder adjacent its outer end, and a second clamping block loosely engaging said screw rod and coperating with said shoulder and also arranged to slidingly engage said face of said plate member, said screw rod being manually rotatable to draw said clamping blocks toward each other and into wedging engagement between said posts and said longitudinal faces on the plate member. In a binderliaving a pair 'of covers and a post-plate equipped with posts attached to one cover, a hollow oriiced casing, forming the opposite post plate and equipped with inclosed locking mechanism arranged to engage said posts, said casing comprising a longitudinal flanged plate, a flanged cover plate making interlocking sliding engagement with said iirst-m'entioned easing plate, and shouldered corner blocks seated in the ends of said casing and secured to said first-mentioned casing plate to prevent displacement of the cover plate.
3. ln a binder having apair of covers and a post-plate equipped with posts attached to i one cover, a hollow orificed casing forming the opposite post plate and equipped with inclosed locking mechanism arranged to en gage said posts, said casing comprising a longitudinal hanged plate, a flanged cover plate making interlocking sliding engagement with said first-mentioned casing plate, and shouldered corner blocks seated iff the ends of said casing and both secured tc one of said casing plates to prevent disp, ce mentof one plate relatively to the ,other FRED L.
