To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I,'il;NDREW H. S'roNE, a
citizen of the United States residing at Kansas City, in the county of elackson and State of lvlissouri have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.-
My inventions-slates to improvements in extension tables; and my object'is toprovide a table of this character which may be used to advantage in apartmel'lts of'liinited space and'whereverit is desirable'to'have tablethat can be adjusted to occupy a-small space or extended to give additional"ca-paclty when needed.

Skeleton drawers and 5 are slidably mounted in the aforementioned slideways and as said drawers are substantially alike only one will be described in detail, the other being correspondingly nun'i'bered with exponents a. his=shown-inoreclearly on Fig. 1-,the drawer 50 consists of a front plate 54, a pair of slides 56: extending rear- .wardly from said front plate 54, an interways 34 and42, respectively, and the slides 56 and 58 operate in the slideways 36 and 40, respectively. By arranging the slide ways and the slides as aforementioned, said slides may pass each other when the drawers at opposite sides of the table are pushed. inwardly and hence the table can bemade more narrow and compact than if the ends of the slidesmetat the center of the table. The drawers may be rendered almost invisible when closed by dispensing with knobs and other exterior means forpulling them out, in which case the strip 8 is provided with recesses 63 and the rear lower edge of the drawer plate 54 is beveled as indicated at 65, to afford finger holds whereby the drawer may be pulled out, but if preferred knobs 65 may be used.
The drawers 50 and 50 are provided with foldable extension leaves 66 and 66, respectively and as said leaves and their fittings are alike only one will be described in detail, the other being correspondingly numbered with exponents a. The leaf 66 consists of two sections 68 and 70, connected at one end with hinges 72. The section 70 is provided with fixed plates 74, which are pivotally and slidably mounted upon a rod 76 supported by plates 78, one of which is secured to one side of the compartment 64 and the other. to one of the side pieces 60. ll hen the leaf 66 is folded in the position disclosed on Fig. 7, its sliding movementon the rod 76 is limited by a sleeve 80 hearing against one of the plates 7 8, and a reinforcing block 82 secured to one of the side pieces 60 and the strip 62. Reinforcing blocks 83 are also employed at the juncture of the strip 62 and the side pieces 60.
The leaf 66 is extended by pulling out the drawer 50 whereupon said leaf is swung one-half of a revolution on the rod 6 from the position disclosed on I 7, to the position disclosed on Fig. 4. The section 68 is then swung one-half of a half l'QVOlUtlOIl to the left on the hinges 72 to bring said section 68 in alinement with the section 70. The'alined sections 68 and 70 are then slid to the right to cause a catch 84 fixed to the underside of the section 68 to engage under a plate 86 countersunk in the upperleft hand portion of the drawer 50. When this occurs a gravity latch 88, pivoted to a metal fitting 90 on the underside of the leaf section 68, engages the inner edge of the plate 86 and thus coacts with the catch 84 in holding the extended leaf firmly in position upon the drawer 50. In order to allow the latch 88 to pass freely over the plate 86 when the extended leaf 66 is slid to the right, the front lower portion of said latch is beveled as indicated at 92 (Fig. 2), and a groove 94 is formed in the leaf section 68 to allow the latch to swing upwardly as it passes over the plate 86. A recess 87 is formed in one edge of the leaf section 68 to permit it to pass the slide 58 when the leaf 66 is swung to the position shown on F 4.
The catch 84 and the latch 88 also hold the extended leaf in such position that its ends are in alinement with the table top 2. A lug 89 depending from the leaf section engages one corner of the drawer and coacts with the catch 84 and the latch 88 in holding the extended leaf in proper position upon the drawer. Should pressure be applied to the front portion of. the leaf 66 while the same is in extended position its rear edge is prevented from springing above the abutting edge of the table top 2 by means of a block 90, fixed to the underside of the leaf section 70 and projecting beneath the table top 2, as
disclosed on Fig. 8.
Extreme outward movement of the drawer 50 is limited by a latch 96 and a stop 98. The latch 96 is pivotally mounted in a block 100 fixed to the underside of the strip 62. A handle 102 is formed at the front side of the latch 96, while a hook 1.04 is formed at the rear end of said latch 96. The hook 104 is slidably arranged in a groove 106 in one side of the slideway 42. Said groove 106 has a recess 108 into which the hook 104 drops and securesthe drawer from outward movement after it has been pushed inwardly to bring the rear edge of the extended leaf 66 into engagement with thefront edge of the table top 2. By reaching in under the drawer and pressing. downwardly upon the handle 102 of the latch96, the hook 104 is raised'out of the recess 108, so that the drawer may again be drawn outwardly until said hook 104 contacts the stop 98 preparatory to'folding the leaf 66. Should itbe desirable to entirely remove the drawer from the table this may be accomplished by removing the stop 98, which is secured to the underside of the strip 8 by a screw 11.0.
The operation briefly stated is as follows: Ordinarily the folded leaf 66 rest upon the handle 102 of the latch '96 andprevents the hook 104 from entering the recess 1.08 and checking the free outward movement of the drawer 50. WVhen the drawer 50 is pulled out until the hook 104 contacts the stop 98, the leaf 66 may be. extended by rotating it a half revolution from the position shown on Fig. 7, to the position shown on Fig. 4, so that it will rest on top of the drawer 50 and the rod. 76. The leaf section. 68 is then rotated one half of a revolution on the hinges 72, after which said leaf is slid longi tudinally on top of the drawer 50 and the rod 7 6 until the catch 84 engages under the plate 86. This movement of the leaf also causes the free end of the latch 88 to pass over the plate 86 and engage its inner edge, so that said latch will cooperate with the latch 84 in securing the leaf from longitudinal movement in either direction. The drawer is then pushed inwardly until the rear edge of the leaf contacts the front edge of the table top 2 in which position the leaf is secured by the hook 10d dropping into the recess 108. When it is desired to close the drawer 50, the operator reaches under and depresses the handle 102 to raise the hook 101 from the depression 108. The drawer is then pulled outwardly until checked by the stop 98, after which the extension leaf is folded into the drawer and the same is closed.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that I have provided a table em bodying the advantages above pointed out, and while I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I reserve the right to make such changes in the construction, proportion and arrangement of parts as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the claims.
Ilaving thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a table of the character described, a table top, a frame to said top, a drawer slidable in said frame, a foldable leaf mounted in said drawer and arranged to be supported in an etxended position and in alinement with the table top by the drawer when the same is in an outward position. a catch on the leaf to engage the drawer and secure them from independent movement when. said leaf is in extended position, and a latch to coact with said catch in securing the leaf and the drawer together.
2. In a table of the character described, a table top, a frame to said top, a drawer slidable in said frame, a foldable leaf mounted in said drawer. and arranged to be supported in an extended position and in alinenwnt with the table top by the drawer when the same is in outward position, a plate secured to the drawer, a catch on the leaf to engage one side of said plate and hold the leaf and the drawer together, and a latch. on the leaf to engage the opposite side of the plate and coact with the catch in securing the leaf and the drawer together.
In a table of the character described, a table top, a frame to said top, a drawer slidable in said frame, a foldable leaf mounted in said drawer and. arranged to be supported in an extended position and in alinement with the table top by the drawer when the same is in outward position, a plate secured to the drawer, a catch on the leaf to engage one side of said plate and hold the leaf and the drawer together, a pivoted latch on the leaf to engage the opposite side of the plate, and a lug depending from the leaf and engaging one corner of the drawer to coact with the catch and the latch in securing the leaf and the drawer from independent movement.
4. In a table of the character described, a table top, a frame to said top embodying superimposed slideways, two skeleton drawers one having slides in the lower slideways the other having slides in the upper slideways, and foldable leaves in said drawers arranged to be supported in extended position and in alinement with the table top by the drawers when the same are in outward position.
5. In a table of the character described, a table top, a frame to said top embodying superimposed slide-ways, a support for the frame and the table top, two skeleton drawers one having slides in the lower slideways the other having slides in the upper slideways, foldable leaves in said drawers arranged to be supported in extended posi tion and in alinement with the table top by the drawers when the same are in outward position, and means for securing the leaves from independent movement of the drawers 'when in extended position.
(5. In a table of the character described, a table top, a frame to said top embodying superimposed slideways and two parallel slideways arranged beside each other, and drawers at opposite sides of the table one having slides in the lower slideways and one of the parallel slideways the other having slides in the upper slidcways and the other parallel slideway to allow the slides on one drawer to pass the slides on the other drawer.
7. In a table ofthe character described, a table top, a frame to said top eml'iodying superimposed slideways, two skeleton (h wers one having slides in the lower slideways the other having slides in the upper slideways, a rod mounted in each drawer, plates pivotally and slidably mounted on each rod, and foldable leaves mounted on said plates and adapted to be supported in extended position and in alinement with the table top when the drawers are in outward position.
