FREDERICK W. TOLLEY, OF COXSAOKIE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HIM- SELF AND A. V. D. COLLIER, OF SAME PLACE.
iwiPRovEwiENT In cuLTivAToRs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. hfdld, dated December 31, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W.ToLLEY, of OoXsa-ckie, in the county of Greene and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gultivator-Standards, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved standard, shown as attached to a beam, parts being broken away to show the construction; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same taken through the line x w, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section ofthe same taken through the line y y,
Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a detail cross-section of the same taken through the line z z, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish a malleable or wrought iron plow-standard, simple in construction, strong, and durable, and which shall be so constructed that it will not clog or choke with sods, grass, weeds, or other obstructions, and to which the plow-plate may be easily and quickly attached and detached;l
and it consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the standard, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents a bar or beam of a cultivatorframe. B represents the body of the standard, the forward edge of which is made thin to adapt it to serve as a cutter for separating the sods, grass, weeds, and other obstructions that might otherwise clog and choke the cultivator. To the upper end of the standard B is attached a plate,(l, of such a size as togive the standard a firm base. The ends of the plate O are slotted to receive the bolts by which it is secured to the beams A, so that the standard may be detached by removing one of said bolts. standard is curved and has ilanges D formed upon the sides of its forward edge to form a plate or seat for the plow-plate E. In the standard B, just in the rear of the middle part of the plate D, is formed a slot, b', and in the plate D, directly opposite the slot b', is formed a slot, d', the lower end of which is made wide so that the head of the bolt or catch e/,rigidly attached to or formed solidly upon the rea-r side of the plow-plate E, may pass through it. The upper part of the slot d' is made narrow to lit upon the neck of the bolt or catch e', as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4.
By this construction, when the cultivator is being used, the pressure of the ground will tend to force the. plow-plate E upward, and thus more securely fasteniit in place.
It will be perceived that the tooth E is not bolted to standard, but fastened by the projection on plate E and slotted groove of standard.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The standard B D, having slots b d shaped to receive a bolt, e', constructed as set forth.
F. W. TOLLEY.
