To all whom 2'2. may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN. P. BROPHY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland Heights, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Automatic Machines, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained, and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
The present invention relates to improvements in automatic machines, and moreparticularly to improvements in'the means for supporting and feeding the cutting forming tools, which are held in the turret head or tool slide, up to and away from the work.
In the usual form of automatic machines it is customary to employ a single turret head in which the tools are supported, whereas in my improved form of turret head I employ a plurality of independent heads or supports for thetools thereby enabling me to perform more and varied operations on the article being operated on, and, in this way increasing the usefulness and efliciency of the machine.
My improvement furthermore relates to an efficient and simple means for accomplishing the relative movement of the two turret heads to and away from the work.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed. drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mechclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

The general character of my improvement may best beseen in Fig. 1' in whichfis shown a housing. adjustably mounted on the guides- 2 of 'the lathe bed 3 of an automatic machine.
In one end of thefhousing 1 is slidably mounted a cylindrical member 4, constitut-- ingone of the tool slides which is held against rotation in the housing 1 by a key 5.

4 and equidistant from the center thereof are holes 6 adapted to retain thetools for oper ating on the articles to be formed. I have shown four holes for tools in the member 4 but it 1s immaterial how many holes are provided as long as they correspond to the number of live spindles in the lathe head. The holes 6 in the member 4 are so placed as to aline with the spindles in the head when the spindle heads are in operative pos1t1on. A cylindrical recess 7 is provided in the rear of the member 4 in which a driv- I ing member 8 is adapted to fit. A spiral channel or groove 9 is cut on the drivingmember 8 in which a roller 10 is adapted to track. the roller 10 is retained in the member 4 by a stud screw 11 passing through the rear of the member 4 and acting as a bearing for the roller 10. By this means any rotation of the driving member 8 will tend to force the member 4' either forward or backward, depending on the direction of rotation' of the driving member 8. A thrust.

At the end opposite to the yoke the member 33 is fastened to an arm 34 by means-of a pivot pin 36 passing through a slot in the member 34. The member 34 is pivotally. connected to the lathe bed 3. Adjustably secured to the outer end of the arm 34 is a rack 40 which engages a segmental gear 41 loosely mounted on the cam shaft 30. Y
An arm 42 integral with the segmental gear 41 is adjustably secured to another segmental gear 43 also loosely mounted on the cam shaft 30. v
Adjustable engagement betweenthe arm 42 and the gear 43 is accomplished by means of a concentric T slot 44 in the gear 43 and sliding block 45 clamping the arm 42 and the gear '43 together by means of the bolt 46' and the nut.47.

The relative position of the rack 40 and the arm or member 34 is adjusted by means of a squared block :49 adapted to slidably" fit in the slot 35. The block 49 also has with a stud 50 which pass s through abo'ss on the end of the rack 40. The rack'40 is. held on'the stud 50 by means of a nut 51 which engages the threaded end 52 of the.
stud 50: By means of this construction it will be seen that by rotating the screw 37 the rack 40 will be moved either awa from or toward thepivotal connection 0 the arm' 34 to the lathe bed 3, depending on the direction of rotation of the screw-37, thereby controlling the length of movement of the rack 40 over the gear 41.
Mounted on or cut integral withthe driving member 19 is a gear which meshes with the segmental gear 43. Thus it will be seen that any rotation of the cam shaft 30 will cause the roller 32 on the arm 33 to be operated by the cam 31 and will transmit a reciprocating movement to the arm 33, thereby rocking the arm 35 about its pivotal support. The movement of the arm 34 will transmit a reciprocating movement to the rack 40 which will in turn operate the segmental gear 41, and, through the arm 42,v
will operate the segmental gear 43, thereby rotating the-driver thereon. As will be more clearly seen in Fig. 1
the arm 33 terminates at its lower'end in an elongated boss 61. The end of this boss 61- is adjustably fastened to an arm 62,

I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention 1. In an automatic machine, the combination of a housing, a plurality of tool-carry-' ing slides in said housing, driving means in' one of said slides, driving means surround ing one of said slides, and means for impart-' ing movement to each of said driving means.
