To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, AUGUSTUS E. SCHLIE- Dnu, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of W'ayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stock-Feeding Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My Vinvention relates toY improvements in stock feeding mechanism for metal working machines, and more particularly to mechanism for feeding rods into a lathe or screwmachine to be cut to desired lengths or otherwise operated upon.
The primary object of my invention is the provision of mechanism applied to a metal working machine which will enable stock tol be quickly and conveniently fed Vinto the machine to be properly positioned therein for clfectino` the desired operation.
Anot ier object is the production of stockfeeding mechanism which can be applied to any common form of screwnmachine, and which whether applied to a machine of the type mentioned or any other machine, will` serve to quickly and effectively feed rods or other stock into the machine to be cut into any desired lengths, uniform or otherwise, or to be otherwise operated upon.
Vllith these and other objects in view, which will fully appear as the invention is hereinafter particularly described, my invention consists in the novel arrangement of devices, in the novel features of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter described and more fully pointedout in the subjoined claims.

Reference being had to the drawings in detail, the numeral S designates the'frame of a metal working machine, as illustrated in this instance a screw-machine, and this frame supports the bed or shears 9, having a head stock 10 at one end provided with front and rear bearings 11, 12, respectively.
A hollow spindle 13 is journaled in the bearings 11, 12, to which the shell or casing of the work or stock gripping chuck 14 is secured. Suitably fastened to said spindle between said bearings is a cone pulley 15 having a driving belt 15a applied thereto to rotate said spindle.
Slidably mounted on the spindle 13 near its opposite end is a clutch-ring 16 and fastened to said spindle adjacent said clutchring is a collar 17 in which clutch levers 18 are pivotally secured, each lever having a long arm 19 and a short arm 2O at an angle to theV long arm. The long arms 19 of said levers lie in contact with the tapered portion 21 of the clutch-ring 1G, while the short arms 9,0 extend through slots 22 formed in spindle 13. Collar 17 is locked in position on said spindle by a lock nut 23 threaded onto the end of the spindle, and a work or stock supporting bushing 24 is thrust into the end of said spindle and retained in position therein.
Arranged slidably within spindle 13, which may be termed the outer spindle, is second hollow or inner spindle :25. rllhe inner spindle is rotatable with the outer spindle and has the collet 2G el the chuck 1d secured thereto so that it moves lengthwise with said inner spindle. Said collet is slitted lengthwise from a point near its inner end to its outer end and the outer end is slightly enlarged andvmade conical to fit an inwardly flaring opening in the outer-end of the chuck shell or casing, whichY will be clearly understood, since such construction is commonly known and is only one form of many commonly used chucks.
The stock to be worked upon is passed through the hollow inner spindle from the rear and through the chuck, and When-said spindle is movedforimrdly or inwardly, the collet of the clutch will move with it and by reason of the conical split end moving in contact with the flaring wall of the chuck shell, the collet will grip the stock and cause the same to be retained against lengthwise movement and to be rotated with the spindle.
16 which is actuated by a forked clutch arm the forked end `of which enters an annular groove 28 in said clutch-ring and straddles the latter. This arm is splined on a carrier or supporting rod 29 fastened into the head-stock by a bolt 30, or otherwise.
Arranged transversely in the head-stock is a rock-shaft 3l which hasan arm 32 secured thereto and connecting said arm with the clutch arm 27 is a link 33. The outer end of the rock-shaft is provided with a hand leve-r 34 for operating said shaft.
To the outer end of the carrier or supporting rod 29 a head or frame 35 is secured. This head or frame forms part of thc stoclefeeding device by means of which rods or other stock are fed into the machine to be operated upon. Said head or frame has two pairs of spaced lugs 36, 37, respec tively, arranged in different horizontal planes. Passing through the upper pair of lugs 3,6 is a shaft 38 for which said lugs serve as journals, its ends extending out-- wardly a distance beyond the sides of said lugs. To one end a. collar 39 is secured to prevent lengthwise movement of said shaft in one direction and to th-e other end a pulley 40 is secured which prevents lengthwise movement of said shaft in the opposite direction and serves primarily to rotate said shaft, a continually driven belt 4l being passed around said pulley.
A guide and feed roller 42 is secured to the shaft 38 between the pair of lugs 36 and is therefore rotated with said shaft. Said roller has a peripheral groove 43, in this instance a concave groove to conform to the cylindrical rod which it is intended to feed into the machine. This roller, broadly speaking, is a feeding element which normally is not in contact with the stock to be fed and does not, therefore, feed the rod unless the latter is forced into the groove of said element and retained in frictional contact therewith.
Journaled in the lower pair of lugs is a spindle 44 to which is secured a presser member in the form of a bell-crank lever 45 having one arm 46 thereof forked to receive a' presser roller 47 situated directly beneathv the feed roller 42. The other arm 4S of said lever has one end of a turn-'buckle 49 pivot-ally secured thereto, while the other end of said turn-buckle has pivotal connection with one end of a curved link 50 whose other end is pivotally secured to the link 33. Upon actuation of said presser member, roller 47 is swung upwardly against the rod a and forces the latter firmly intov the grooved feed roller 42, and at such times, the rod is caused to travel inwardly due to the feed roller being positively driven at all times.
Slidably mounted at the opposite end of the bed or shears 9 is a turret-slide 5l, which may be moved lengthwise on the bed by means of any common mechanism, such as now provided for this purpose in machines of the kind described. Any suitable means may also be provided to lock or retain said slide in any desired position. Mounted on said turret-slide for rotatable adjustment, as is common, is a turret 52- which Vmay be locked or retained in any adjusted position in any approved manner. The turret has the usual peripheral sockets or openings 53, and in one of these an end gage 54 is adjustably fitted.
The rod or other stock fed through the hollow spindle of the machine is adapted to bear against said gage, and by means of the feeding mechanism above described, the operator may release the presser element of said mechanism the instant the end of the rod comes in Contact with the gage.
Between the head-stock and the turretslide is the usual lathe carriage 55 which is slidable on the bed or carriage. Arranged for transverse sliding movement of said carriage is the tool-rest 56 having the tool-post 57 mounted thereon with a tool 58 secured in saidv post, in this instance, a cutting tool. By reason of the carriage 55 being slida'ble lengthwise on the bed or shears, the-cutting tool may be adjusted to any desired point along the rod a and by means of the tran versely movable tool-rest 56, said tool may be moved into contact with said rod at the exact point at which it is to be severed. The distance between'the cutting point and the end-gage of the turret determines the exact length into which the rod is to be cut.
The tool-rest is moved transversely by means of a gear segment 59 meshing into a gear-rack on the tool-rest, as is common, said segment having a handle 60 to enable quick manipulationof said rest and to permit the cutting tool to apply the desired cutting or advancing pressure against the rod to sever the same while rotated.
It will be apparent from the above description that the machine illustrated in the drawings to which my invention is applied is one of many common forms of metal working machines which may be equipped 1anV with my invention and that it is only illustrative of the use and operation of my invention. Y
It is also apparent that the feed roller 42 is interchangeable, since the stock or work to be operated `on may be of various cross sectional forms, and it may be advantageous to having the peripheral edge of the feed roller conform in part, at least, to the formation of the stock or work.
Manifestly, in machines having chuck operating mechanism constructed differently than that shown in the drawings or located at a different part of the machine, modifications can be resorted to, to connect the feeding mechanism with the operating lever or other element which causes actuating of the chuck operating mechanism, this being particularly true since my improved feeding device, in its broadest sense, is an attachment.
The operation of my invention as herein shown is as follows `When commencing operation, the parts are in the positions shown in Figs. l and 5. The rod a or other stock is passed inwardly between the feed roller 42 and the presser roller 47, and as soon as the end thereof is positioned between these two rollersthe operator moves the hand lever 34 from the position shown in Fig. l to the position indicated by the dotted lines (il in said figure. This causes the presser roller 47, through the medium of intermediate parts, to be moved in Contact with the rod, the latter being thereby pressed into firm contact with the feed roller 42, which is in constant rotation. The rod a is therefore fed into and through the hollow inner spindle 25, and as the collet 26 of the chuck is in open position this rod passes freely through the same so that the end of the rod may be brought into contact with the end gage 54 of the turret.
The operating lever 34 is then moved from the position indicated by the dotted lines 6l, Fig. 1, to that in which it is shown; whereupon the clutch-ring 16 is moved Outwardly on the outer spindle 13, causing the Y long arms 19 of the clutch levers 18 to be moved outwardly. This action causes the short arms 20 of said levers to move the inner spindle 25 lengthwise or toward the chuck. The collet of the chuck is thereby closed upon the rod or other stock fed through said hollow inner spindle and grips the rod firmly. The rod will therefore rotate with the hollow inner spindle, which is splined or otherwise so arranged within the outer spindle that it rotates with the latter although free to move lengthwise. At the same time the presser roller 47 is caused to move away from the rod and the feeding roller is free to rotate in a position above the rod, either in or out of contact therewith.
When said feed roller rotates in contact with the rod, the pressure of the rod thereagainst is insuhicient to cause lengthwise movement of the rod, owing to the fact that the rod is gripped by the chuck.
When the rod is in position with its end against the end gage 54, the cutting tool 58 is brought in contact therewith by movement of the tool-rest transversely on the carriage, and this tool is provided with feeding pressure which is applied against the rod while the latter is rotated, thus causing the portion of the rod between the cutting tool and the end gage to be severed from that portion extending through the hollow spindle. These operations are quickly and easily effected so that rods of considerable length may be cut into short uniform lengths in the shortest possible period of time.
It is to be understood that changes may be resorted to in the construction-of my invention without departing from the spirit of the same as expressed in the claims or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is,"
1. rlhe combination with a stock chuck, of a feeding device comprising a non-rotatable support, a single feeding roller having a fixed position and a single presser roller arranged beneath said feeding roller and spaced therefrom, said presser roller being adapted for movement toward and from said feeding roller, said feeding and presser rollers being so positioned relative to said chuck that said presser roller is adapted to move the stock to be fed through' said chuck into Contact with said feeding roller, means for closing the chuck upon the stock and simultaneously moving said presser roller from saidV feeding roller, said means serving also to release the chuck from the stock and simultaneously move said presser roller toward said feeding roller.
2. In a metal working machine, the comv bination with a frame, a hollow spindle rotatable in said frame and a stock chuck at one end of said spindle, of a stock feeding device supported by said frame and arranged at the other end of said spindle said stock feeding device comprising a positivelyand continuously rotating roller, a swinging lever and a roller rotatably mounted on spindle, said stock feeding device comprising a head or frame, a positively driven feeding roller on said head or frame, a bellcrank lever pivotally supported by said head er frame, a presser roller rotatable on one arm of said bell-crank lever and adapted for movement toward and from said feeding roller, means for actuating said chuck, means for actuating said bell-crank lever, and a single operating lever having connection with said chuck actuating means and said bell-crank lever for actuating them in unison.
4. In a metal working machine, the combination with a frame, a hollow spindle rotatablyl mounted in said frame, a stock chuck at one'end of said spindle, a clutch mounted on said spindle, and connections.
between said clutch and said chuck to operate the latter, of a rod secured to said frame and arranged parallel with said hollow spindle, a clutch arm slidable on said rod engaging said clutch to actuate the same, an operating element carried by said frame, connection between said clutch arm and said operating element, a stock feeding device secured to said rod and comprising two rollers arranged to grip or to release the stock, means to rotate one of said rollers, and connection between said feeding device and the connecting means between said clutch arm and operating element.

In a metal working machine, the combination with a frame and a rotatable chuck carried by said frame, of a horizontallydisposed rod secured to said frame, a slidable element on said rod, means interposed between said slidable element and said chuck to operate the latter, a rock-shaft mounted in said frame, an operating lever on said rock-shaft, an arm on said rock-shaft, a link between said arm and the slidable element on said rod, a head or frame secured to the outer end of said rod, a positively driven feeding roller on said head or frame, a bell-crank lever pivotally secured to said head or frame, a roller rotatably mounted on one ani of said bell-crank lever and adapted for movement toward and from said feeding roller, a turn buckle pivotally connected to the other arm of said bell-crank lever, and a link connecting said first-mentioned link with said turn buckle.
6. In a stock feeding device comprising a rotatable roller having a fixed axis, a bellcrank lever having a long arm and a short lever to cause the roller thereon to be moved.
toward and from said first-mentioned roller.
7. A stock feeding device comprising a frame, a feeding roller rotatable on said frame, means for positively driving said roller, a bell-crank lever pivotally secured to said frame, a presser roller on one arm of said bell-crank lever, and operating mechanism secured to the other arm thereof.
8. A feeding device comprising a frame having two pairs of spaced lugs, a shaft mounted for rot-ation in one of said pairs of lugs, a feed roller secured to said shaft, means for rotating said shaft, a spindle mounted in the other pair of lugs, a bellcrank lever mounted on said spindle having a short forked arm and a long arm, a roller within said short forked arm, and operating mechanism secured to the end of said long arm.
9. In a metal working machine, the combination of a hollow spindle and detachable means for feeding stock tl erethrough, said spindle including feeding roller normally out of contact with the stock, and a presser device adapted to press the stock in contact with said roller.

In a metal working machine, the coinbination with a hollow spindle and means for feeding stock through said spindle including a feeding element from which the steek is normally spaced, and a presser element beneath said feeding element adapted to press the stock in contact with said feeding element.

The combination of a hollow spindle, a stock chuck at one end of said spindle, means for rotating said spindle, a stock feeding device at the other end of said spindle including a rotatable roller, and separate means for rotating said roller, said stock feeding device feeding' only when the chuck is in open position.

The combination with a machine having a hollow spindle and means for rotating said spindle, of means for feeding stock through said spindle including a feeding roller from which the stock is normally out of contact, and a presser device adapted to press the stock in contact with said roller, and means for separately rotating said feeding roller.
