Description

M. A. JENNINGS. DIE FOR POWER HAMMERS. APPLICATION FILED APR.3, 1918.
affozucq Patented Apia 20, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MYRON A. JENNINGS, OF SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA.
DIE FOR POWER-HAMMERS.
Application filed April 3, 1918.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MYRON A. JENNINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Cruz, in the county of Santa Cruz and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Power-Hammers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in dies for power hammers and has relation more particularly to a die employed in connection with upright or helve hammers and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved die which, in addition to being used for welding tires or the like, can be readily employed in edging the tire without the necessity of any adjustments.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved die whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more. fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the-same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in elevation illustrating a die constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, and in applied position; and
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of my improved die as herein embodied, detached.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings A denotes an anvil with which coacts the hammer H herein disclosed as of a helve type, although I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself in this respect. Removably engaged with the anvil A and the hammer H are the dies D herein disclosed and disposed lengthwise of the helve and which are of the type particularly adapted for use in the welding of tires.
The inner end portion of the die D carried by the anvil A has its upper face cut away Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 20, 1920.
Serial No. 226,525.
as indicated at 1 to afford an offset with the walls of said cut-away portion or offset 1 perpendicularly related and the vertical wall substantially at right angles to the upper or working face of the die D. While I herein disclose the cut-away or offset portion 1 at the inner end of the die D carried by the anvil A it is to be understood that the same can be arranged at the opposite end, or if preferred both ends of said die may be cut away or offset. It is also to be understood that if desired, either end portion, or both end portions of the die D carried by the hammer II may be cut away or offset. However as these different arrangements are obvious it is not believed that a detailed illustration is necessary, although I indicate such arrangements by dotted lines and as indicated at a.
By the provision of the cut-away or offset portion 1 at the end of a die, I have found in practice that the coacting dies of the anvil and hammer may be readily and effectively employed in the edging of a tire without the necessity of making any adjustments whatever.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a die for a power hammer constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be employed.
I claim:
As a new article of manufacture, a die for a power hammer adapted for use in welding and edging in a pallet wheel tire, said die having an end portion of its work' ing face cut away, the walls of said cut away portion being substantially perpendicularly related with the end wall of said cutaway portion being substantially at rightangles to the working face of the die, said cutaway portion of the die being adapted to be employed in edging a tire.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MYRON A. J ENNINGS'.
Witnesses Mrs. R. F. BALDWIN, JAMES W. HOSKINS.
