To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN Bonrn, a citizen of Russia, residing at Ansonia, county of New Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safe-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in locks, particularly to types adapted to be used in connection with safes and other like containers where positive security is required.
The principal object of the invention is to provide means whereby unbolting of the lock mechanism is prevented except by the prior manual retraction of a detent remote from and not readily recognizable as a part of the lock, whereby a double means of se curity is alforded, this invention being particularly applicable to a novel form of lock for which I have made application for Letters Patent in the United States, Serial No. 238,860 and which describes in detail the lock construction.
The purposes of the invention are at tained by the novel construction and-combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in Which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view showing a conventional type of safe and indicating the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary front elevational view of the same, the safe door being shown in an open position.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view, taken on line ldc of Fig. 3.
Referring now more specifically to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates the base of the safe restin upon rollers and casters 11, the entire front of the safe being normally covered by doors 12, secured by hinges in the ordinary manner.
The interior of the safe may be compartmented and an inner door 14: used to protect the more valuable contents contained within the drawers 15. The door 14 is mounted upon hinges 16, and is formed with abutting stepped edges 17, engageable within the corresponding side walls 18 of the safe, which are surrounded with asbestos or outer material adapted to prevent the transmission of heat should a conflagration occur, this Specification of Letters Patent.

Attached to the inner side of the door 14 is a lock casing 20 in which a plurality of bolts 21 are operably engaged with a horizontal bar 22, normally spring actuated into a retracted position, and which are manipulated by lock mechanism of any suitable character.
Contactable with the center locking bolt 23 is a lever 24, pivoted on a pin 25 set inthe lock casing, while the outer end of the lever is pivotally engaged with a fork 27, secured on the end of a rod 28 which extends outwardly through the lock casing 20, and is guided by a fixed bracket 29, the eX treme end of the rod being so positioned that collar 30, fixed upon a slidable rod 31 may make contact with it, pressing the bolts into full operative or engaging position and preventing their retraction when in a forward position.
The rod 31 extends through the lock casing 18, and has upon its outer end a fixed collar 32, between which, and a loose collar 33, is positioned an encircling compression spring 35, normally holding the bar 31 in its outermost position. Engaged upon the exterior of the inner casing 18, by hinges a vertical bar 40, having an extending operating handle 41, while alfixed upon the vertical bar 10 upon the uppermost inner side is a stem 42, carrying at its outer end a block 48 adapted to pass through the opening 4%, formed in the front lock casing, and when the handle is turned outwardly it causes the block 4:8 to make contact with the extending head 32, pressing the sliding bar 31 forward and. by reason of its con tact with the end of the bar 28, holding the loci: bolts in their engaged position and preventing their retraction until the handle 41 is turned in the manner indicated. Thus, if the bar 4E1 be turned outwardly and left in that position in which it is engaged and held by the catch &4, the bolts are prevented from being retracted, or if the bolts are partially retracted as shown in Fig. 1 and it is desired to open the door, the bolts must first be pressed outward to their full extent in order for the look mechanism to be operated.
Having thus describ my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device for preventing the retraction of bolts, the combination with a lock casing and a bolt slidablc therein, of a lever pivoted in said casing, said lever engaging with one of said bolts, a rod pivoted to the extreme end of said lever and extending through said lock casing, a bar hinged vertically at the rear of said look, a handle on said bar by which it may be operated, and an extending element secured to said bar adapted to make contact with said rod, whereby it is prevented from retraction.
2. In a bolt locking device the combination with a casing, a plurality of bolts operable therein, said bolts being engageable With a fixed keeper, of a lever pivoted in said casing, said lever engaging with one or more of said bolts, a rod pivotally attached to the free end of said lever and extending through said casing to a point remote therefrom, a detent arm contactable with the outer end of said rod by which it is prevented from being operated, and means for actuating said detent arm from the exterior of the door upon which said lock is engaged.
3. In a bolt locking device the combination with a casing, a plurality of bolts operable therein, said bolts being engageable with a fixed keeper, of a lever pivoted in said casing, said lever engaging with one or more of said bolts, a sectional rod, one of the sections being pivoted to said lever, means for guiding said rod, means for normally holding the other section of said rod in an extended position, an arm adapted to make contact with the last named section of said rod, and means for actuating said arm whereby said bolts are held in an engaged position.
