Description
A. AND H. BACHMAN.
SEMAPHORE FOR A'UTOMOBILES. APPLICATION FILED NOV.26, 1919.
1,336,063 Patented Apr. 6, 1920.
nnrrn ARTHUR BACI-IMAN AND HARRY BACHMAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SEMAPI-IORE FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 6, 1920.
Application filed November 26, 1919. Serial No. 340.916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ARTHUR BAOHMAN and HARRY BAcrrnAN, both citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Semaphores for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a reliable, efiicient and comparatively inexpensive semaphore of simple construction which can be readily applied to any automobile.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description and the invention will be claimed at the end hereof.
Reference will be made to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which Figure 1, is a face view of a semaphore embodying features of the invention and showing one position of the parts of the device.
Figs. 2 and 3, are similar views illustrating other positions of the parts.
Fig. l, is a perspective view, and
Fig. 5, is a top or plan view with portions omitted.
In the drawings 1, is a bracket adapted for attachment to the under face of the rear sill of a car. This bracket 1, is provided with a lateral extension 2, constituting a crosswise ranging bell crank lever bearing and with a goose neck standard 3, arranged in the direction of the length of the bracket and constituting, at its upper end, a lengthwise ranging signal blade bearing. One signal blade 4:, is immovable and at least one signal blade is movable. In the present instance two signal blades 5 and (S, are movable and are provided beyond the bearing with extensions 7 and 8. There is a bell crank lever 9 and 10, for each blade and wires'or rods 11, connect one end of each bell crank lever with the extension of a movable blade. The other end of each bell crank lever is connected by a rod or wire 12, to the brake or clutch mechanism, not shown because too well understood to require illustration.
As shown the fixed blade 4, is marked Stop, the front movable blade 5, is unmarked, and the rear and movable blade 6, is marked Slow. However, the movable blade 6, and its accessories need not in all cases be employed. thrown out, the blade 6, is turned up and shows the word Slow, Fig. 2, and as the brake is thrown on, the blade 5, is turned up and shows the word Stop and covers the blade 6, Fig. 1. Vhen the brake is off and the clutch is in, all the blades drop down and the blade 5, covers the other blade or blades, Fig. 3.
Modification may be made in details of construction and arrangement without departing from the spirit of the invention which latter is not limited as to such matters, or otherwise than as the prior art and the appended claims may require.
We claim:
1. A semaphore for automobiles comprising the combination of a bracket having a crosswise ranging bell crank lever bearing and a goose neck standard arranged in the direction of the length of the bracket constituting a lengthwise ranging blade bearing, fixed and turnablc blades mounted on the blade bearing and provided with extensions beyond the same, bell crank levers on the bell crank lever bearing, and connections between the extensions of the blades and levers, substantially as described.
2. A semaphore for automobiles comprising the combination of a bracket having a crosswise ranging bell crank lever bearing and a goose neck standard arranged in the direction of the length of the bracket and constituting a lengthwise ranging blade bearing, fixed and turnable blades on the blade bearing, bell crank levers on the bell crank lever bearing, connections between the blades and levers, clutch connections to one of said bell crank levers, and brake connections to another of said bell crank levers, substantially as described.
