To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, EDSON C. ANsoN and HARRY E. KEIM, citizens of the United States, residing at Glenwillard, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Signals, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an automobile signaling device and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character of simple substantial construction which may be easily operated by the occupant of the machine.

An object of the invention is the simplemanner ofv constructing the different parts so that the expense of the device is materially reduced.

Another object of the invention is forming the letters of radium paint upon a signal blade so that the device may be used at ni ht as well as in the day.

Fastened in the side plates 3 and 4 is a bolt 11 the major portion of the length of which is square in cross section as indicated at 12 while the remaining. portion has screw threaded engagement with a pair of binding nuts 13. Engaging the square portion of the bolt is one end portion of a signal blade 14 and the same is suitable spaced from the side plates 3 and 4 by washers 15.

vEach of the signaling letters 16 on the blade is made of radium paint so that the letters will be illuminated at night. These letters are eifectively shielded and protected by the casing when the signal blade is removed to an inoperative position. For throwing the signal blade to operative or inoperative position we provide an arm 17 arranged in convenient reach of the operator of the machine. From this construction it will be seen that in a very simple manner we are able to convey to drivers of other machines the intentions of the driver ahead. It is of course to be understood that the nuts 1.3 can be tightened to such an extent that their frictional engagement with the blade 14 will hold the same in an operative or an inoperative position irrespective of the vibration of the machine. When the blade is within the casing it is effectively protected against the weather or the rubbing action of foreign bodies. From the foregoing descriptiontaken in connection with the accompanying drawing it should be apparent that we provide a device of simple construction composed of few parts which may be manufactured and assembled at a relatively low cost and by means of which signals may be displayed in the day as well as at night and the signaling element fully protected when in an inoperative position.

Having described our invention what we claim is;

An automobile direction signal comprising a casing including a spacing member forming the top, back and bottom walls of the casing, parallel side plates secured upon said spacing member, clamping members extending from said spacing member and en gageable upon a wind shield, said casing extending vertically and having its outer edge open, a; shaft journaled transversely through the upper portion of said casing and having its portion within the casing angular in cross section, a signal arm secured upon the angular portion of said shaft and normally disposed in a vertical position within said eas- Patented May '13, 1919.
