FOLDING BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 30, 1920.
Application filed December 12, 1917. Serial No. 206,721.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BRAYTOJ'G. RICHARDS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in folding boxes, and has for its object the provision of an improved construction of this character, which may be economically manufactured and is capable of easy and expeditious extension from folded into extended form.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in Which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank for forming a box, embodying the invention,
Fig. 2, a plan view of the box completed shown in folded condition, and
Fig. 3, a perspective view of the box distended.
The particular embodiment of the invention disclosed in the drawings, comprises a box blank made of ordinary box board or other suitable material, said blank being creased in the usual manner to define and outline a central bottom portion 7,-side walls 8 and end walls 9. Corner flaps 10 are formed 011 the ends of side walls 8 in the form shown, and are provided with eyelet holes 11 for the reception of eyelets. -End walls 9 are provided with eyelets 12, located on the central line of said walls at a dis tance from the bottom line thereof, substantially equal to one-half the width of the box, eyelet holes 11 being also positioned in the corner flaps at a point distanced from the juncture with the side wall and fromthe bottom line of the, box, substantially equal to one-half of the box. In making up the box from the blank shown in Fig. 1, the end walls 9 are first folded inwardly on top of the bottom 7 and the side walls 8.
folded inwardly over said end walls and overlapping each other, bringing the eyelet holes 11 in opposite corner flaps 10 in regis tration with each other. Then eyelets l2 are loosely secured through the registering eyelet holes 11, so as to form a pivotal oint,
thus completing the box. The box thus completed may be readily distended by simply raising the side and. end walls thereof, the end walls being of a size to fit snu ly between the side walls so as to be frictionally held in elevated position, Where it is desired to utilize the box as a hat box, as in the instance illustrated, tapes 13 are secured through the eyelets 12 and passed freely through the eyelets 12. In this latter arrangeinent, all that is necessary to distend the box is a slight pull on the tapes 13. The distention of the box merely by pulling upon the tapes will be found to occur readily where the height of the box is not much more than one half its width, but where the height is greater it will be found necessary to first partially elevate the side walls with the hands unless considerable looseness is provided in the pivotal connection between the corner flaps. By this arrangement also it will be observed that the end walls 9 and corner flaps 10 may be made of con,- siderably less height than the side walls 8, thus saving material.
In describing different box constructions,
I have referred to certain walls as being side and end walls, but obviously either set of opposed walls may be considered as constituting side or end walls. For convenience in nomenclature, I have considered the walls which carry the corner flaps as the side walls, and the other walls as the end walls.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred forms of construction for carrying my invention into effect, these are capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
' Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A folding box comprising a bottom and side and end walls, the height of the side walls being greater than one-half of the widthof the bottom so as to overlap when folded inwardly, and said end walls being arranged to be folded inwardly onto the bottom; and corner flaps on the ends of the side walls, said corner flaps being overlapped and pivotally connected to each other outside of said end walls, substantially as described.
2. A folding box comprising a bottom and side and end walls, the height of the side walls being greater than one-half of the width of the bottom so as to overlap when folded inwardly, and said end walls being arranged to be folded inwardly onto the bottom; corner flaps on the ends of the side walls, said corner flaps being overlapped and pivotally connected to each other; and tapes secured to said end walls and passing through said corner flaps, substantially as described.
3. A folding box comprising a bottom and side and end walls, the height of the side walls being greater than one-half of the width of the bottom so as to overlap when folded inwardly, and the end walls being of less height than the height of the side walls and folded inwardly onto the bottom; and corner flaps on the side walls, said corner flaps being overlapped and pivotally connected to each other outside of said end walls, substantially as described. 4. A folding boX comprising a bottom and side and end walls, the height of the side walls being greater than one-half of the width of the bottom so as to overlap when folded inwardly, and the end walls being of less height than the height of the side walls and folded inwardly onto the bottom; corner flaps on the side walls, said corner flaps being overlapped and pivotally connected to each other outside of said end walls; and tapes secured to said end walls and passing through said corner flaps, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. V
BRAYTON G. RICHARDS.
