To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES S. Anne, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riverton, in the county ofBurlington and State of. New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldable Hand Bags, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in foldable hand bags and aims to provide a hand bag of novel, simple, inexpensive and efiicient construction which may be manufactured of paper or card board or other suitable inexpensive material and which may be readily folded into a compact, fiat condition for packing and shipping purposes, and-opened for service when desired and which when open-for service will simulate and have substantially all the advantages of hand bags of a well'known type now extensively manufactured at a greater cost and sold upon the market in large numbers.

The invention resides in the novel hand bag and in the novel construction, combination and arrangementof the elemental parts thereof hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Figure 9 is a view of a card board blank from which the entire bag exclusive of the handles may be made.

Referring to the drawings, 2 designates the bottom wall of the bag, 3, 3 the end walls thereof, and 4, 4 the side walls thereof.

The side walls 4 are provided with handles 5, 5 which are glued. stitched, or otherwise suitably secured to the upper central portions thereof. The handles 5 project above the side walls and they are adapted to be grasped 1n one hand of the person using or carrying the bag when the upper portions of the side walls 4' are brought together to close the bag, as shown in Fig. 2.

One of the side walls 4 is provided with two proJecting' ton es 6,6 located on the respective sides 0 its handle 5. tongues 6 are adapted to be turned downwardly over the upper edges of the side walls l when they are brought together, as shown in Fig. 2, and the tongues 6 are provided with lateral projections 9, 9 adapted to be inserted into slots 10, 10 in the opposite side wall 4 when the'tongues are turned downwardly adjacent thereto. it will thus be understood that the tongues 6 form fastenin devices to hold the upper portions of the slde wallsl in the closed position shown in Fig. 2.

Each end wall 3 is provided with a central, vertical crease 11 extending from the top to the bottom thereof, and the bottom wall 2 is provided with a central, longitudinal crease 12 which extends from end to end thereof and meets the lower ends of the vertical creases 11 in the end walls 3.

Each end wall 3 is provided with a transverse crease 13 which extends from side to side thereof and crosses the vertical crease 11.

Each end wall 3 is provided with two creases 14, 14 which converge upwardly from the sides of the bottom of the end wall to the vertical crease 11 therein and meet each other and the vertical crease 11 at a point spaced above the bottom of the end wall a distance substantially e ual to one-half of the width of the end wa l; and each end wall 3 is provided with two creases 15, 15 which converge upwardly from the ends of the transverse crease 13 to the vertical crease 11, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

Each side wall 4: is provided with a horizontal crease 16 extending throughout the length thereof with its ends meeting the adjacent ends oil the transverse creases 13 in the end walls 3.

The bag may be folded into the flat condition, shown in Figs. 4 to 8, inclusive, for packing and shipping purposes; it may be opened to the condition shown in Fig. 1 to receive an article or articles to be carried therein; and the upper portions of the end These and side walls of the bag may be folded inwardly to close the top of the bag, as shown in Fig. 2, when the bag is in service.

When the upper portion of the bag is closed from the condition shown in Fig. l to the condition shown in Fig. 2, the portions of the end walls 3, above the creases 13 therein and below the creases 15 therein fold inwardly and downwardly toward the bottom wall 2, the portions of the end walls 3 above the creases 15 therein fold inwardly toward the side walls 4 while the side walls 4 above the creases 16 therein fold inwardly toward each other and toward the portions of the end walls 3 being folded inwardly until the upper ed e portions of the side walls 4 meet each ot er. As the upper portion of the bag is thus closed, the upper portions of the four vertical corners of the bag and the creases 13, 15 and 16 act as .hinges; and, after the bag is thus closed, the tongues 6 on one side wall 4 are turned downwardly over the opposite side wall 4 and the projections 9 of the tongues are tucked into the slots 10, holding the bag in the closed position shown in Fig. 2 with the handles 5 in .regist with each other to be grasped by one ban to carry the bag thereby. The upper portion of the bag may be opened from the condition shown in ig. 2 to the condition shown in Fig. 1 by a reversal of the operation just described, and it may be thus closed and opened as often as desired.

When the bag is folded into the flat condition shown in Figs. 4 to 8', inclusive, from the condition shown in Fig, 1, the portions of the bottom wall 2 on the respective sides of the crease 12 therein are folded upwardly between the side walls 4, the portions of the. end walls 3 above the creases 14 therein on the respective sides of the vertical crease 11 are folded outwardly and toward each other and the portions of the end walls 3 below the creases 14 therein on the respective sides of the vertical crease 11 are folded inwardl toward each other and toward and into registry with the similarly shaped portions of the end walls 3 above the creases 14 and below the creases 11 which are being folded outwardly. As the bag is thus folded into the flat condition, the vertical corners of the bag, the corners formed by the union of the bottom wall 2 and side walls 4, and the creases 11 and 14 act as hinges.

The blank shown in Fig. 9 is formed into the bag by folding the side walls 4 and end Walls 3 on the lines 20 and 21, respectively, and by folding the flaps 22 and 23 on the sides of the end walls 3 inwardly and stitching, gluing or otherwise suitably securing them to the adjacent end portions of the side walls 4. The same reference numerals are used to designate like parts of the blank and the finished bag shown in Figs. 1 to 8, inelusive.

I claim as my invention:

1. A foldable hand bag comprising side walls and foldable end and bottom walls, each end wall having a vertical crease extending from the top to the bottom thereof, a transverse crease extending from side to side thereof and crossing the verticalcrease, and diagonal creases which converge upwardly from the transverse crease, said vertical creases permitting the end'walls to be folded to bring the side walls toward each other to collapse the bag and said transverse and diagonal creases permitting the upper portions of the end walls to be folded inwardly to stiffen the bag and prevent accidental folding of the end walls on said vertical creases when the bag is uncollapsed.

A foldable hand bag comprising end walls, side walls and a foldable bottom wall and having a longitudinal crease extending centrally through the end and bottom walls and having in the region of each junction of the end and bottom walls a pair of diagonally extending creases which diverge from said longitudinal crease to bottom corners of the bag and permit the ends and bottom walls to be folded to bring the side walls toward each other to collapse the bag, each end wall having a transverse crease extending from side-to side thereof and crossing the longitudinal crease, and each end wall having diagonal creases which converge upwardly from the transverse crease, the transverse and last named diagonal creases permitting the upper portions of the end walls to be folded inwardly to bring the upper portions of the side walls toward each other to close the upper portion of the bag when it is uncollapsed,

A foldable hand ba comprising end walls, side walls and a foldable bottom wall, the bottom wall having a central longitudinal crease therein, each end wall having a central vertical crease therein, each end wall having creases therein which converge upwardly from the sides of the bottom of the end wall to the vertical crease therein at a point spaced above the bottom of the end wall a distance substantially equal to onehalf of the width of the end wall, each end wall having a transverse crease therein extending from side to side thereof above the said creases therein which converge upwardly, and each end wall having creases therein which converge upwardly from the ends of the transverse crease to the vertical crease therein.

4. A foldable hand bag comprising end walls, side walls having their uppeiycentral portions provided with carrying handles, and a foldable bottom wall, the bottom wall having a central longitudinal crease therein,. each end wall havin a central vertical crease therein, each enr wall having creases therein which converge upwardly from the ame-7e sides of the bottom of the end Wall to the vertical crease therein at a point spaced above the bottom of theend Wall a distance substantially equal to one-half of the Width 6 of the-end wall, each end Wall having a transverse crease therein. extending from side to side thereof above the send creases therein which converge upwardly, and each end wall having creases therein which converge upwardly from the ends of the trans- 1 verse crease to the vertical crease therein.
