The invention to be hereinafter describedl` relates to' wood planing machines, and is an 'in'lprovement upon the machine shown, de-

The machine of said application comprises a frame having a rotary cutter mounted thereon and feed rolls for feeding the work Y gaging member, and devices are provided'A for clamping the bridge and work engaging member together to secure the same in dit- Iferent positions of adjustment.v
The aforesaid construction constitutes a good, efficient form of means for the pur-Y pose, but said construction is susceptible `of certain improvements.

An adjusting In the use of the machine it is frequently desirable toobtain a slight variation in the pressure of the workl engagingf member against the work, and therefore, it is desirn able to be able to obtain a nicety of relative adj ustmentof the bridge member and work engaging member. Y Another purpose of the invention, therefore, is to provide an indexv and scale which will readily enable a slight relative' adjustment of said parts from -a previous adjustment, and which willY indicate the direction of adjustment necessary to move a work engaging' member toward o1' from' the work.

The lower roll has a shaftf? journaledz in` boxes 9 mounted on the side frames of the l machine beneath the table, and the-upper. feed roll has ashaft 11 journaled'in boXes adjustable vertically in guides in the side frames of the machine, said boxesl being pressed downward by coil springs 13 confined between the upper ends of said boxes and yokes 15. A pair of upper and lower eut-feed rolls 17 are provided, the lower roll having a shaft 19 journaled in bearings in boxes 21 mounted in side plates of a carriage Q2 to .be referred to. 'lf he upper out-feed roll 17 has a shaft 3 journaled in bearings in boxes 25 adj ustably mounted in guides in the side fra-mes, and pressed downward by coil springs 27 confined between the upper ends of said boxes and yokes 29.

A rotary critter' 31 is mounted on a shaft 33 journaled in bearings on the carriage 22 referred to. lThis carriage may be raised or lowered to raise and lower the cutter and the lower out-toed roll 17 to vary the depth et the cut in the work as desired. The elevation of the carriage may be regulated by wedges 35 beneath the carriage and adjusted by devices 37. Since these wedges and adjusting devices are well known in the art, itis unnecessary further to show and describe the same herein.
Next will be described the means opposed to the cutter for holding the work in proper engagement therewith while the work is ted past the cutter by the in and out-feed rolls. This means, in the present instance et the invention, comprises a bridge member 3) located between the in and out-iced rolls, and having ends l1 adapted to be supported on the opposed side trames of the machine.
lt is desirable to adjust the bridge member with respect to the side iframes for purposes ot preliminary adjustment. To accomplish this, in thepresent instance, a pair of adjusting screw bolts i3 are provided for each of the ends d'1, and are threaded in tapped holes in said ends. The lower ends of these screw bolts may rest upon the upper edges of the side trames of the machine, as will be noted in Fig. 1. By adjusti'nent ol' said screw bolts, the bridge i' einber may be raised and lowered as desired, and one end of the bridge member may be raised or lowered more than the other according to conditions as required. To secure the bridge member in its dilierent positions of adjustment, screws 45 may be provided having their lower end portions threaded into tapped holes in the side iframes, and smooth portions adapted to project upward through smooth holes in the ends 41 oit the bridge member. The upper end portions of the screws -lz may be threaded'to receive securing nuts 17. Alfter the bridge member has been adjusted with the elevation desired, the nuts 47 may be tightened against the upper face of the bridge member and press the adjusting bolts against the upper edges of the side frames of the machine. the bridge member may be securely held in different positions of adjustment. Beneath the bridge member is a work engaging member 119 having a work engaging under tace 51 which may be transversely rounded somewhat to facilitate feed of the work past the same. At the opposite ends of the work en gaging member are upstanding flanges 53 having inclined upper edges 55. Coperating with the upstanding ianges 53 are flanges 57 projectingl downwardly on the bridgemember. These downwardly extending lianges have lower inclined edges 59 opposed to and engaging the' upper edges 55 of the upstanding flanges of the work engaging member. To prevent lateral relative movement between the bridge member and work engaging member, the former may have tongues 6,1 entering grooves 63 on the latter. In a machine of the character described, thecombination of a frame, a rotary cutter mounted on said frame', and Work positioning means opposed to said cutter comprising a Work supporting member mounted on saidl frame, a work engaging member between said supporting member and cutter, said members having inclined interengaging parts for moving the Work engaging member toward or from the cutter on adjustment of said Work engagingl member relatively to the supporting' member transversely of the machine frame, a post rising from the Work engaging member up to the supporting member, adjusting scren7 means mounted on the supportingl member and cooperating with said post for moving the Work engaging member transversely of said frame, and means to secure said work engaging member in different positions or' adjustment.
A In a machine of the character described, the combination of a frame, a rotary cutter mounted thereon, and Work positioning means opposed to said rotary cutter' comprising a bridge member extending transversely of said frame and connected thereto, a Work engaging member beneath said bridge member, said members having inclined parts for effecting movement of the Work engaging member toward or from the cutter on adjustment .of the Work engaging member transversely of said frame, said bridge member having elongated apertures therein and bosses surrounding said apertures With inclined upper edges, posts projecting from said Work engaging member up through the elongated openings in said bosses, elements resting on the upper edges of said bosses, and bolts coperating with said posts and elements to secure the Work engaging vmember' to the bridge member in different positions of adjustment.

In a machine of Vthe character described, the combination oit a frame, a ro tary cutter mounted on said frame. and Work positioning'means opposed to said cutter comprising a supporting member mounted on said frame, a Work engaging member carried by the supporting member, an' adjusting member projecting centrally from said Work engaging member up to said supporting member, means accessible above said supporting member for moving said adjust" ing member to adjust the Work engaging member relatively to the supporting member, and means to secure said Work engaging member to said supporting member in different positions of adjustment.

In a machine of the character described, the combination of a frame, a rotary cutter mounted thereon, and work positioning means opposed to said cutter comprising a supporting member, a Work engaging member carried by said supportmg member, said members having interengagmg parts for moving the Work engaging member toward or from the cutter on.
