JOHN S. MARSHALL, OF IMLAY CITY, MICHIGAN.
GUIDE FOR CIRCULAR SAWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 378,513, dated February 28, 1888.
Application filed October 26, 1887.
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, J OHN S. MARsI-IALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Imlay City, in the county of Lapeer and State of Michigan; have invented a new and useful Improvement in Guides for Circular Saws, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in guides for circular saws; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a circular-saw mill provided with a saw-guide embodying my improvements. 2 Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, parts of the circular saw being removed. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the linear :0 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line 3 y of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of the upper plate. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the lower plate. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detached view of one of the guides, showing the adjustable pin therein. Fig. 8 is an enlarged elevation of the outer end of one of the plates, show ing the transverse openings therein through which the adjustingscrew extends.
A represents the frame, which is of the usual construction. 13 represents the saw-arbor, journaled in the same.
G represents a circular saw secured to one end of the saw arbor and removable therefrom, and D represents a driving-pulley which is secured to the arbor near its inner end.
On one side of the frame A, on the upper side thereof, is secured a plate, E, which is arranged in a recess, F, in the upper side of the frame, as shown.
G represents an arm the inner end of which is adjustably fitted to the plate E by a setscrew, (see Fig. 3,) and the outer end of which is curved upward and approaches the inner side of the circular saw. In the upper end of the curved arm G is a transverse-threaded opening, in which is screwed a hollow sleeve, H. The end of this sleeve which extends from the saw is squared, and thereby adapted to be turned by a wrench, and the inner end of the said sleeve, which is opposed to the saw, is provided with a cylindrical recess, I, in which Serial No. 253,465. (No model.)
is fitted a wooden pin, K, which bears against the inner side of the saw. An opening, L, is made through the outer end of the sleeve and communicates with the recess I, and a punch of suitable form is adapted to be inserted-through the said opening, so as to force the pin K out of the recess Lwhen the said pin becomes worn, to enable a washer of suitable thickness to be placed in the bottom of the recess I to bear against the inner end of the pin K, and there by compensate for the wear of the pin.
The outer end of the plate E is provided with a rounded boss, M, in "which is made a transverse opening, N, the ends of which are flared outward, as shown in Fig. 8, and for the purpose to be hereinafter described.
0 represents a plate which is arranged over the plate E, and is somewhat longer than the latter, as shown. The inner ends of the plates E and O are provided with vertical openings, which register with each other and receive a bolt or pin, P, that serves to pivot the inner ends of the said plates to the frame. The plate 0 is provided with a vertical longitudinal slot, R, of suitable length, and the outer end of the said plate 0 is reduced, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, and is provided with a transverse opening, which has its ends flared similar to the opening N.
S represents a clip which is arranged transversely on the plate 0, has its ends turned downward to form flanges T, that bear against the edges of the plate 0, and has its sides turned upward to form transverse flanges U.
V represents a guide-arm the inner end of which is arranged transversely on the clip S and is engaged by the flanges U, which latter serve to guide the arm V transversely on the plate 0. The said arm V is further provided at its inner end with a vertical slot, WV,which is arranged at right angles to the slot R and intersects the same, and a bolt, X, passes through the slots R and NV and through an aligned opening in the clip S, and is provided at its upper end with a clamping-nut, Y, by means of which the arm V is secured at any desired transverse adjustment, so that the outer end of the said arm, which is curved rearward and is arranged on the outer side of the circular saw, may be caused to approach the said saw as nearly as may be desired.
The outer curved end of the arm V is proviously described as attached to the arm G.
B represents a guide-yoke which is bolted to the under side of the upper plate, 0, at a suitable distance from the free end thereof. The outer end of the lower plate, E,worksin the saidyoke and extends through the same. From one side of the yoke B, at the inner end there of, projects an ear, 0, having a threaded opening, through which extends an adj listing-screw, D. The outer end of this screw is provided with a head, E, adapted to be turned by the thumb and forefinger of the operator, and the inner end'of the screw extends through and is swiveled in the transverse opening N at the free end of the upper plate, 0.
F represents asimilar adj ustingscrew which engages a suitable standard, G, at one end of the frame A and has its inner end swiveled in the transverse opening at the free end of the upper plate, 0.
The operation of my invention is as follows: By turning the screw Fthe upper plate, 0, may be moved outward or inward, and as the free end of the lower plate, E, is connected to the said upper plate by the yoke B and screw D, previously described, it follows that the said lower plate will be moved with the upper plate, and thereby the guides attached to the said upper and lower plates and bearing against opposite sides of the sawwill be caused to guide the latter in the required direction.
By turning the screw D the lower plate, E, may be moved independently of the upper plate, 0, so as to cause the guide-pins to be adjusted with relation to the saw.
the saw, means connecting the free end of the plate E to the plate 0, and the adjustingsorews to operate the plates 0 and E, substantially as described. I
2. The combination of the pivoted plate E, having the guide-arm G, for the purpose set forth, the plate 0, arranged on the plate E, pivoted at one end, and having the longitudinally and laterally adjustable guide-arm V, for the purpose set forth, the yoke B, attached to the plate 0, the adj usting-screw D, engaging the said yoke and swiveled to the plate E to move the latter independently of the plate 0, and the adjustingscrew F, to move the plates 0 and E simultaneously, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the plates E O, pivoted together at one end, the guide-arms G V, adj ustabl y mounted on the plates E O, respectivel y, connections between the plate 0 and the free end of the plate E,-the adjusting screw D, to operate the plate E independently of the plate 0, and the adjusting screw F, to operate the said plates simultaneously, as set forth.
4. The combination of the plate 0, pivoted at one end, the guidearm mounted thereon and adjustable both longitudinally and laterally thereof, and the adj listing-screw acting on the free end of the plate to operate the same, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination of the guide-arms having transverse internally-threaded openings in their ends and the sleeves mounted in said openings and having a recess, I, in one end to receive a plug, and an opening, L, in the other end communicating with the recess I, substantially as set forth.
6. In a saw-guide, the plates E O, pivoted together at one end and each provided with the adjustable guide-arms between their ends, and the screws for operating on the outer or free ends of the plates and moving the same, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN S. MARSHALL.
Witnesses:
