UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
WILLIAM G. PUTT, OF LUDLOW, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,174, dated November 19, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. PUTT, of Ludlow, in the county of Ohampaign and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Steam Clothes-Washer, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved steam clothes-washer, the cover being removed. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical longitudinal section of the same taken through the line :20 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical cross-section of the same taken through the line 3 3 Fig. 1.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved steam clothes-washer, simple in construction, convenient in use, and effective in operation, washing the clothes thoroughly and in a very short time; and it consists in providing a boiler, which is suspended within another, so as to leave a space between them, and has a series of holes in its sides, with a detachable plate provided with a guard, a hole, and a peculiar valve, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the outer and B is the inner boiler or shell, the upper edges of which are securely soldered to each other to prevent any escape of steam or water through said joint. The inner boilerB is made smaller than the outer boiler A, so as to leave a space of from onequarter to one-half an inch between them, according to the size of the washer. The inner boiler B is made shallower than the outer boiler, so as to leave a space of two inches (more or less) between the bottoms of said boilers. The inner boiler is perforated with numerous holes, 71 the lower holes being made small, andthe other holes gradually increasing in size toward the top of the boiler, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. In the middle part of the bottom of the inner boiler B is formed a hole, b
' which is covered with a plate, 0, the side edges of which are inserted beneath strips b attached to the bottom of the boiler B, one of said strips being made wider than the other, so that the plate 0 may be applied and removed by slipping its edge so far beneath said wider strip that its other edge may be inserted and withdrawn past the edge of the narrower strip b In the center of the plate 0 is formed a hole, 0 one and three-fourths inch, more'or less, in diameter, which hole 0 is covered with a strip, 0 to protect the hole 0 from being closed, choked, or clogged by the clothes, and to serve as a handle for inserting and removing the plate 0. To the lower side of the plate 0, around the hole 0 is attached a slotted tube or tubular frame, cage, or spider, D, of a larger diameter than said hole 0 and in which is placed a ball, E, which is secured from falling out by a wire or other convenient means. The washer is provided with a cover, F, fitting snugly into the mouth of the inner boiler B.
In using the boiler the plate 0 and its attachments is removed, a quantity of soap and enough water to fill the space between the boilers A B to the depth of an inch (more or less) are poured in. The plate 0 is then inserted, the clothes are put in, and the boiler is placed over the fire. As the water heats and steam is developed the ball E is raised, closing the hole 0 The water and steam are then forced up between the walls of the two boilers A B, and are projected through the holes 12 in the boiler B.
The steam and water projected through the lower holes b penetrate the mass of clothes laterally; and the water and steam projected through the holes b above the clothes strike the upper side of said clothes and percolate through them,so that the clothes will be washed clean in a very short time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The detachable plate 0, provided with the guard 0, hole 0 and valve D E, and detachably attached to the perforated bottom of the inner boiler B,.substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
IVILLIAM O. PUTT.
