To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, TVILLIAM W. BAYS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of lllecklenburg and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVashing-liiachines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in washing machines of that type known as clothes pounders.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device of this character, which will be very eflicient in operation and can be Very inexpensively manufactured.
As is common in devices of this character, the clothes are cleaned by forcing the water and air contained in the pounder through the same. This is accomplished in the present device by the several air chambers from which the air and water rushes and inagitates the water around the clothes.
lVith the above and many other objects in view, my invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing-:Figure 1 represents a central vertical. longitudinal section through the washing machine. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 1 showing a portion of the device in plan view.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates an outer coneshaped casing having a flat top 2 which is slightly concaved and provided with a plurality of openings 3. A conical shaped cap member lis secured to the top 2 at its lower edge and covers the openings 3, thus forming an air chamber 5', which will be hereinafter more particularly described. The top 9. is slightly depressed or concaved to permit any water entering the chamber 5 to readily drain therefrom through the openings 3.

formed around its upper portion, through which the water entering said member passes into a chamber 9 formed by the cone 1 and a conical shaped member 10 which is secured at its lower edge to the lower edge of said cone and at its upper edge to the funnel shaped member 6. The point of attachment of the upper edge of the member 10 to the funnel shaped member 6 is spaced inwardly from the openings 8 as illustrated. This cavity or chamber 9 it will be seen is substantially wedge shaped in cross section and the water which enters the same through the openings 8 is expelled through the smaller openings 11 formed through the cone 1 adjacent its lower edge. Any water, however, which is trapped within the cavity when the device is no longer in operation is permitted to flow therefrom through the small discharge apertures 12 formed at the intersection of the lower edges of the cone 1 and the member 10. A portion of the water which enters the cavity 9 passes through the plurality of openings 13 formed in the conical shaped member 10 adjacent its upper edge into an additional chamber 14-. This last mentioned chamber is formed by the wall ofthe member 10, an annular band 15, and a horizontal partition 16. The band 15 is connected at its lower edge to the lower edge of the inner cone 7 and its upper edge to the funnel shaped member 6 intermediate the ends thereof. The horizontal partition is secured to this band 15 and to the inner wall of the member 10 and has a plurality of large outlet openings 17 formed therein through which the water Water also enters the chamber 14: by way of the chamber 18, it passing into the same through the openings 19, and out through the openings 20. Since the openings 19 are spaced from the bottom of the chamber 1 8, drainage openings 21 are formed at the junction of the band and the inner cone 7 to permit the escape of water when the device is not in operation. The inner cone at its lower end is provided with the crossed strips which prevent the clothes being washed from entering the funnel shaped member 6. An additional feature ofthe invention is the provision of the ring 23 which is secured by its upper edge to the conical shaped member 10 adjacent the lower edge thereof, its lower edge being free and spaced from the edge to the cone 1. As the device is forced down through the water and the clothes, the water entering the space between this ring and the member 10 escapes with considerable force through the openings 24; which are formed entirely around the same adjacent its connection with said member 10. i
As a means for operating the parts heretofore described, I provide a pair of parallel handles 25 connected at their upper ends by the cross bar 26. These handles may be of any desired length and are attached to the cone 1 by means of the sockets 27 whose lower ends aresoldered to said cone on opposite sides thereof. Any preferred means may be employed for holding the handles within the sockets the means employed in the present instance being set screws 28, thus permitting said handles to be readily removed. Any water which enters the sockets may readily escape through the drainage openings 29 formed in the lower ends thereof. The upper portions of the sockets are supported by the braces 30 which connect the same with the cap member l. This cap member is also provided with a socket member 31 formed by a cylinder which extends through the top thereof and into the chamber 5 where it is secured. This is provided so that an additional form of handle may be used if desired. In other words the parallel handles 25 may be removed and a single handle inserted in the socket 31. I I
The operation-of this device is similar to those of similar nature, it being moved up and down in thetub of water containing the clothes. As the pounder is moved down wardly the air contained therein is compressed to a considerable extent and is forced upwardly into the chamber 5 and the upper portion of the chamber 9. The water enters the inner cone and passes upwardly into the funnel shaped member from where it passes into the chamber 9. Some water also enters said chamber through the openings 11, but since the openings 8 are considerably larger than the other openings, this water is forced backw'ardly through said openings 11 together with the water which enters through the openings 8 and causes considerable agitation in the water adjacent the outside of the device. At
the same time the water which enters the chamber formed by the ring 23 is forced through the openings 24 therein and also readily lifted from the bottom of the tub due to the expansion of the compressed a1r therein which greatly aids in overcoming the suction which would otherwise result.
T claim as my invention:
1. In a device of the class described, a conical shaped member, a funnel shaped member secured to the upper edge thereof, an inner cone secured at its upper edge to the lower edge of said funnel shaped member, an annular band secured to the funnel shaped member by one edge and at its other edge to the inner cone, said band having a plurality of inlet openings adjacent its bottom and a plurality of outlet openings adj acent its upper edge, and a handle for operating said device.
2. In a device of the class described, a conical shaped member, a funnel shaped member secured to the upper edge thereof, an inner cone secured at its upper edge to the lower edge of said funnel shaped member, an annular band secured to the funnel shaped member at one edge and at its other edge to the inner cone, said band having a plurality of inlet openings adjacent its bottom and a plurality of outlet openings adjacent its upper edge, a horizontal partition connecting said conical shaped member and said band to form a chamber, said partition having a plurality ofoutlet openings, and a handle for operating said device.
3. In a device of the class described, an outer cone, a funnel shaped member depending from the inner wall thereof and having a plurality of openings adjacent its outer edge, a conical shaped member secured by its lower edge to the lower edge of said cone, its other edge being secured to said funnel shaped member at a point spaced in.- wardly from said openings to form a cham her, said chamber having a plurality of outlet openings to permit the escape of water entering through the other openings, an inner cone secured at its upper edge to the lower edge of said funnel shaped member,
