This invention relates to meansfor uniting pipe sectlons, particularly such sections as are made of light material used for flue pipes, air conduits, etc., in connection with heating plants. While my invention is not particularly limited to this field, it is particularly adaptable to the same.
The main object of my invention resides in forming the meeting ends of adjacent sections so that the two parts may be telescoped slightly one within the other and securely locked in such position. This I accomplish preferably by a cooperating fluted hem arrangement on opposite ends of the pipe, which hems are turned in and out respectively on the two pipe ends, to be in such position to engage each other.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in perspective of what I have termed the large end of the pipe section,
Fig. 2 is afragmentary perspective of what I have termed the small end of the pipe section,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary section showing two pipe ends locked together, and,
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are fragmentary sectional views illustrating the manner in which the small end of the pipe section is formed.
In the drawings, the two cooperating pipe sections shown, are designated by the reference numerals 1 and 2, these pipes being preferably made of very light material and being formed ordinarily from a flat sheet whose two longitudinal edges each have been provided with a hem arranged to interlock after the manner shown at 3. This manner of forming pipe sections is well known in the art and forms no portion of the present invention. However, I have provided a novel means for holding thesheets to cylindrical form, which means take the form of a stamped out tongue 4 turned back upon the interlocking hems, as shown particularly in Fig. 2. It will be understood that it is only necessaryto so look the small end of a pipe, since this small end fits within the large end of the next succeeding pipe and consequently "holds this large end expanded. The locking tongue 4 is also sodisposed that it will lie beneath the end of the next succeeding pipe when the parts are assembled.
To securely hold the various pipe sections together, I have provided the edge portion of the large end with a hem 5 which is shown as fluted, it being the turned in port-ion only which is fluted and the outer portion being plain. The small end is formed as shown diagrammatically in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the edge portion of this small end being initially stretched as is shown at 6, this small end then being turned over to form a hem as shown at 7 and this hem then fluted as is shown at 8, whereby both the interior and the outside of the small end is fluted; It will be understood that this fluting and turning is accomplished while the metal forming the parts, is in theflat and consequently because of the stretched edge 6, the outturned pore tion of the hem on the small end of the pipe will project laterally away from the side of the pipe section to some considerable extent.
This then forms the means for cooperating with theinturned hem 5 on the large end of adjacent section to form a lock and because of the fluted nature of these hems, the portions may be more securely fastened together and in addition, because of these fluted hems, the parts are prevented from rotating relatively with respect to each other.
An inspection of Fig. 2 will show that the locking tongue 4 is also so disposed as to be covered by the large end of the section 1 when the parts are united. Each of the sections 1 and 2 is also provided with an ornamental bead 9, the head 9 on the section 2 being for the purpose of forming a shoulder for preventing the adjacent section from telescoping too far upon the same. This same head 9 on the large end of the adjacent section is merely provided to give symmetry of appearance, but it will be noted from Fig. 3, that the length of the two hems is such that when they are in the cooperative post venting relative circular movement-as well as detachment of the parts without permanently securing the parts together. Also, the sections are held lockedin their round formv by means of the tongues 4 which, when the sections are assembled, are covered to pre went their accidental separation.
What I claim is: v
1. The combination with a pair of pipe sections, of means for joining the same comprisinganinturned fluted hem on-one of said sections, the outside being plain, and an outturned hem on, the other of said sections, both-the hem and pipe being flutechsaid. last named, section being adaptedv to be fitted within the other section 2. The combination-with a pair of pipe sections, of means for oiningthe same comprising an inturned fluted hem on one of said sections, and anoutturned fluted hem onthe other of said sections whose lower edge: is
enlarged to lie away from the side of the section, said lastnamed section being adapted to be fitted within the other section.
3. The combination with a pair of pipe sections, of means for joining the same comprising an inturnedfluted hem on one of said sections, an outturned fluted hem on the other of said sections whose lower edge is enlarged to lie away from the side of the sectionysaid last named section being adapted tobe fitted within the other section, and a shoulder formed in said inner section against which theedgeof the outer section abuts when theparts are locked together.
