Be it known that I, NORMAN ALLDERDIOE, a citizen of the Unit-ed States, residing in Lorain, Ohio, have invented certain new4 and useful Improvements in Extension-'Brims for Ladles, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to ladles used in the manufacture of steel and has particular reference to means whereby the carrying capacity of said ladles may be increased to permit a greater amount of slag to accumulate at the upper zone of the ladle than has been heretofore possible with the ladies in use.
The objects and advantages of this structure Awill be apparent to those skilled in this art from the following description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a ladle equipped with my improved extension brim;
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the ladle showing particularly the several segmental sections which form the brim.
In the drawings the ladle 1 comprises a steel shell 2 which is joined to a bottom shell 3 in the usual manner. Both the side walls and the bottom of the ladle arel provided with the usual form of refractory lining 1 as shown. To the upper edge of the steel shell 2 is secured an annular rim 5 which extends over the top edge 6 of the refractory lining 4. To this rim I secure my improved extension brim indicated generally by the numeral 7 to increase the slag carrying capacity of the ladle. In the embodiment shown this brim consists of a plurality of arcuate angle bar sections 8 which are provided with slots 9 for the reception of bolts 10 which are tapped into the rim 5 to securely hold said sections 8 in place. The extension brim 7 does not extend entirely around the upper edge of the ladleV but is interrupted at 11 to form an avenue of escape for the slag contained in the upper zone of the ladle which is adapted to over flow by way of the lip 12 and is secured to the ladle in juxtaposition to the interrupted portion 11 of the brim.
The ladle is provided with the usual stopper rod 13 which is manipulated by means of a lever 14 for controlling the flow of molten metal from the nozzle l5 in the bottom of the ladle.
From the above it will be clear that by the utilization of my invention existing ladles may be modified so as to increase` their slagcarryin'g capacity by bolting to the top rim 5 the extension brim as described. This brim being constructed of heavy angle iron does not require any refractory lining. And in view of its sectional construction if any portion thereof becomes broken or badly burned, said seetion can be readily removed and another' one put in its place.
In the manufacture of steel it is often desirable to use a ladle having a greater slag carrying capacity than the ones at hand and as these ladies are of great size having a capacity, for example, of between 7 O to 80 tons, it is neither a simple nor economical matter to quickly obtain a ladle having the necessary extra capacity for-the particular work in hand. i
My improved extension brim provides an effective and simple means whereby the capacity of such ladles may be increased.
Though I have described with great partieularity the details of the embodiment herein shown it is not to be construed that I am limited to the precise construction shown as it is clear that changes and substitution of equivalents may be made by those skilled in the art without departure from the invention as defined in the following claims.

In a ladle. the combination of a metal shell, a. refractory lining within said shell extending to the rim of the shell, and a removable brim detachably secured to the rim of the ladle shell, said brim being of angular cross section and unlined and being adapted to increase the carrying capacity of the ladle.
