To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GARRY J. DORMANDY, a citizen of the, United Stat-es, residing at Troy, Rensselaer county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shades or Reflectors and Supports Therefor, of which the following is a specification. j I
My invention relates tonew and useful improvements in shades o-r reflectors and supports therefor, for 7 use in connection with lamps, particularly electricincandescent lamps, wherein the lamp bulb is mounted on a member which is supported in such a manner that it may be adjusted or manipulated to locate the said bulb at, the point most advantageous to the needs of the user. While the invention is capable of general application, wherever suitable, it is' particularly adapted for use in connection with that general type of electric lighting fixture illustrated in United States Letters .Patent granted to me No. 1,126,672, dated January 26, 1915, and No. 1,072,976, dated September 9, 1913.
In constructions of this general character,

The resultis that operatives, in adjusting the lamp to suit their necessities, grasp the reflector as a handle to swing the lamp supporting memher, with the result that the thinsheet metal socket is twisted or bent, and Often has its parts deranged. It is, therefore, an important object of my invention, among others, to provide a shade or reflector which can be secured in operative relation. to the lamp bulb engaged with the socket, by an improved support adapted to be connected to the adjustable supporting, member, so that should an operative grasp the reflector to use the same as a handle to shift the supporting member, the force exerted will not be placed upon the socket or the lamp bulb, but will be exerted upon the adjustable supporting member, so that the bulband the socket are protected against strains or forces which would ordinarily injure the same. l The invention consists in the improvements to be'more fully described herein after, and the novelty of which will be particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed. have fullyjand clearly illustrated two claims.

Referringto the drawings by characters 1 of reference, and. particularly Figs. 1,- 2 and 3, I will first proceed to describe a known form of electric lamp fixture, in order that my present inventlon Wlll be clearly understood, but I will: statelthat. the particular type of fixture shown in the drawings, and to be described hereinafter, is merely by way of example, and imposes no limits upon my present invention, except in so far as may be defined in the appended 1 designates a hollow, vertical standard having laterally projected arms 2, which sup- 1'. b joints 8 capable of movement in different directions, and for this reason may be termed universal joints. One memher 4: of these joints is provided with arms 5 having alining apertured ears 6, in which is slidably and rotatably'mounted a hollow arm 7, supporting at one end a socket mem her 8 to receive the threaded member 9 of an incandescent lamp bulb- 10. The socket member may or may not be of the wellknown key type, the switch key being shown at 11, or it maybe of the keyless type. The key socket member 8 is shown, and may be, of a wellknown commercial type in which the body of the member is made of a thin metallic shell, composed of two parts 12, 13, which are usually connected by rivets 14, or other suit-able means not shown, for instance, bayonet joints (not shown). It will be understood, however, that the in vention is not limited in its construction to any particular type of socket or connection for securing the lamp bulb to the supporting member.
At the head of the standard 1 may be arranged a distribution box 15, having a socket or sockets to receive the plug or plugs 16, to each of which is connected a conductor 17 entering one end of the member 7 and passing therethrough, and connected to the lamp in order to convey current to the lat ter. The distribution box has a suitable terminal for the feed wires 15 which pass through the hollow standard 1. All of the features above described may be of the con struction shown in my said patents, and need not be described in greater detail, particularly in view of the fact that my present invention is not limited to the specific construction of said features.
I will now proceed to describe the improved shade or reflector and support, constituting my present invention. 18 designates generally a shade or reflector which may be made of thin sheet metal, and is preferably shaped to conform to the general contour of the commercial form of incandescent lamp bulb, in connection with which it is adapted to be used, but the shade or reflector is of suflicient size so that when in position relative to the bulb, it will bear the proper relation thereto, to give the desired reflecting or shading effects. This shade or reflector 18 is provided at its rear portion with a flange 19, preferably formed on the are of a circle, and adapted to be secured to the improved support or mounting by means of which it is to be secured in proper relation to the lamp bulb and its supporting fixture. 2O designates generally the improved support for attachingthe shade or reflector in operative relation to the lamp bulb, without securing said shade or reflector to the immediate parts of the lamp, such as the bulb, or the socket. This supporting member 20 is made preferably of metal and of such dimensions a to be rigid, and preferably consists of a shank 21 of the proper length, and formed on its inner face with a longitudinal groove 22 adapted to receive the supporting member 7 of the fixture. The shank 21 is provided with suitable means for securing it in position on said supporting member, said means preferably consisting of an arm or lug 23 curved over the said groove 22 transversely of the latter, so as to take position on the opposite side of the supporting member 7, from the shank member when in position on said member 7. The arm 23 is provided with a set screw 24 which is adapted to be screwed into engagement with the member 7, in order to hold the shank 21 in position thereon. It is obvious that other means may be provided for securing the shank 21 on said member 7, but that described is simple and efficient.
At its forward end the member 20 is provided with suitable means for attachment to the shade or reflector 18 in order that the latter will be properly supported. This means preferably consists of a head 25 having a curved forwardend piece 26, to which the flange 19 on the shade or reflector is adapted to be rigidly secured in any suitable manner, for instance, by rivets 27. The head 25 described is deflected laterally out of longitudinal line with the shank 21, to form a. recess 28 preferably of larger diameter than the socket, so that when the shade or reflector 18 is in position on the fixture, the said head 25 and also the reflector 18 will be free from the lamp socket, so that any force exerted upon the shade or reflector will not be communicated to the said socket.
From the above description taken in connection with the drawings,'it will be seen that the shade or reflector 18 in no way is attached to, and preferably does not engage, the lamp socket, but is secured to the supporting member 7 independently of the socket and the lamp, so that should an operator grasp the reflector and use it as a handle to adjust the lamp to the desired posi tion, as is often the case, by sliding the member 7 through the ears 6, or by swinging said member 7 on the joint 3, the force exerted in performing the adjustment, is in no way applied to the lamp socket and lamp bulb, but is exerted upon the adjustable supporting member 7. The result is that the connection between the lamp and the socket, and also the shell of the socket and its parts, are relieved of strains which often result in injury and even dismemberment.
It will also be seen that the shade or reflector body, together with said rigid member, constitute a handle, by means of which the adjustable lamp supporting member may be adjusted or manipulated without danger of having the force for that purpose exerted upon the lamp bulb, or the connection between the same and said lamp sup porting member.
In the form shown in Figs. 4 to 7, inclusive, the shade or reflector 29 is of substantially the same form as that previously described, but is provided with a rear recessed extension 30 to fit over the socket 31, or other lamp connection. Extending rearwardly from the portion 30 is a longitudinally extending shank member 32, which is curved in cross section and adapted to have its concave side or face set over the lamp supporting member 83. The reflector 29, the recessed portion 30, and the shank or securing member 32, are preferably formed in an integral piece from suitable sheet metal, and they may be provided with a marginal flange 34 which serves to stiffen the structure. In order to provide means for securing the shank member or attaching member 32 to the member 33, I form parts of the flanges 34 on the opposite longitudinal edges of the member 32, by turning said flanges outwardly and backwardly, so as to be hooklike in cross section, as indicated at 35, and employ a clamping member adapted to cooperate with these hooklike flanges to clamp the member 32 in position. This clamping member consists of a strip of metal 36, of substantially the same length as the shank 32, and being curved in cross section to provide a longitudinal channel 37, whereby it may fit over the member 33 on the opposite side of the latter from the shank member 32. The opposite longitudinal side edges of the clamping member 36 are provided with in-turned hooklike flanges 38, adapted to interengage with the outwardly and backwardly turned flanges 35 on the member 32, so that when the clamping member is in holding position relative to the shank a sleeve is formed surrounding the lamp supporting member 33. The clamping member is applied in engagement with the shank by interengaging the flanges 38 at the forward end thereof, with the rear ends of the flanges on the shank 32, and then sliding the clamping member longitudinally of the member 32 until it reaches the position shown in Fig. 4. In order to hold the sleeve thus formed rigidly in position, I provide a clamping screw 39 passing through an opening 40 in the bottom of the clamping member 36 and threaded through a nut 41 located within the channel of said member, said clamping screw being adapted to impinge the member 33, whereby the members 32 and 36 are securely held in position. It will be seen that by impinging the screw 39 against the member 33 the member 36 is moved to cause a positive interengagement between the flanges 38' and the flanges 35, whereby the shank 32 is positively clamped against the member 33. In order to prevent turning of the nut 41, the latter is arranged within a groove or recess 42, arranged in the bottom of the member 36 and having parallel side walls 43, which the side face of the nut engage, and the latter is held from turning.
As is the case with the form shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the shade or reflector shown in Figs. 4 to 7 may be grasped and used as a handle to adjust the adjustable supporting arm, without danger of breaking or deranging the lamp or its socket.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A device of the character described, comprising a shade or reflector body, a
shank member rigid with said body, andhaving an open groove extending longitudinally thereof and adapted to receive a support for a lamp socket, and means for removably and rigidly connecting said shank to the lamp support with the latter in said groove and independently of the socket.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a shade or reflector body, a rigid member including a recessed head rigidly connected to said body, said member also in cluding a longitudinally grooved shank adapted to receive a lamp support, and means for connecting said shank to the lamp support.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a shade or reflector body, a rigid member including a recessed head rigidly connected to said body, said member also including a shank, an arm on the shank adapted to take position about a lamp support, and means for connecting said shank to a lamp support.
4. In a lighting fixture, in combination, an adjustable lamp supporting arm, a lamp socket carried thereby, a shade or reflector body adapted to have operative position relative to a lamp bulb engaged with said socket, a rigid member including a recessed portion extending over a lamp socket, and
rigidly connected to said shade or reflector body, said rigid member also including a rearwardly projecting shank, and means for securing said shank to said lamp support, whereby the shade or reflector body and said rigid member constitute a handle for manipulation of the lamp supporting member.
5. In a device of the character described, in combination, an adjustable member carrying a lamp socket, a combined shade or reflector and handle adapted to be grasped to adjust said member, and comprlsmg a shade or reflector body, a rigid member having one end rigidly connected to said body, and having its opposite end rigidly connected to said adjustable member independently of the lamp socket whereby said reflector may be grasped as a handle to adjust said adjustable member without exerting strain on the lamp socket.
