COMBING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 16, 1919.
Application filed September 12, 1918. Serial No. 253,788.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ERNEs'r SAVERY MAYNARD, residing at Preston, county. of Lancaster, England, ALBERT MoRRIs ASH- cRoF'r, residing at Ashton-on-Ribble, county of Lancaster, England, and ALEXANDER En- WARD FLETCHER, residing at Preston, county of Lancaster, England, all British subjects, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to combing machines of theHeilmann or similar type, and is designed to provide eflicient guides for the ends of the comb cylinders to insure a good firm selvage to the sliver.
It consists essentially in mounting the guides at the ends of the intermediate segments of the comb cylinders upon springs by which the guides are maintained in the normal working position, and permit of depression of the guide upon contact with the nipper or cushion plate or other fixed part such as the top comb or detaching rollers, without damage, during the revolution of the cylinders.
The invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is an end elevation of comber cylinder showing the improved guide in position.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same.
Fig. 3 is an elevation of the cylinder segment B with the spring supported guides in position.
Fig. 4. is a reverse view of same.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of end of cylinder segment B and spring supported guide D.
The comb cylinder A with needles a, fluted segment a and intermediate segment B of thin sheet metal fitted behind the last row of needles, are all of the ordinary construction.
The guides D are mounted upon the intermediate segment B one at each end of the cylinder A. Each guide D is pivoted at its forward end upon a pin d and at its rear end is supported upon a spring 03 attached 50 to the underside of the segment B by which the end is forced outward. The pivoted end of the guide is nearer to the center of the cylinder, and the rear end is bent and passes through a slot 1) in the segment B.
The guide D may be mounted on a spiral or other spring and although it is preferably mounted upon a spring at the rear end only, it may be mounted upon a spring at both ends.
The guides D are maintained in close contact along their sides with the edges of the sliver, while the nipper is opening and previous to the piecing taking place, and the inclined outer edges and spring connections allow for the gentle depression of the guides upon contact with the nipper plate or cushion or other fixed part such as the top comb or detaching rollers without damage.
By the application of the guides D to the comb cylinder B a good firm selvage is given to the sliver, thereby reducing the liability to roller laps to a minimum, and the carrying forward of any loose dirt or short fibers which may have accumulated on the edges of the sliver is prevented both of which .are conducive to higher production and better work.
What we claim as our invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. A cylinder for a comber of the Heilmann or similar type characterized by the guides on the ends of the intermediate segment B thereof being mounted on springs to maintain the guides in normal position, and to permit of depression on contact with the cushion plate or other fixed part during the revolution of the cylinder substantially as described.
'2. In a comber cylinder the combination with the needles the fluted segment and the intermediate segment between them of guides at either end of the intermediate segment, pins upon which the guides are pivoted at the forward end and springs upon which the guides are mounted at the rear end substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERNEST SAVERY MAYNARD. ALBERT MORRIS ASHCROFT. ALEXANDER EDWARD FLETCHER.
