PAPER CLIP.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. 5,1918- RENEWED JULY 24.19l9- 1,314,81 8. Patented Sept. 2, 1919.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS LEA, OF EL PASO, TEXAS.
PAPER-CLIP.
Application filed March 5, 1918, Serial No. 220,461.
' To all whom it may concern:
. mitting ease of manipulation and the manufacture thereof at a greatly reduced cost.
Another object of the invention is to provide a paper clip having the above described characteristics, and which is formed of a single piece of metal which may be in the nature of a stamping.
In addition to the foregoing, this invention comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar and corresponding parts are designated by the same characters of reference throughout the several views in which they appear;
Figure 1 is a view of my improved cllp illustrating its application.
Fig. 2 is a view thereof in edge elevation.
Fig. 3 is a view of the clip 1n end view, and I Fig. 4 is a view thereof in section.
With reference to the drawings, 10 indicates a strip of metal from which the clip is formed. The clips may be stamped out of a sheet in the blank form and subsequently bent into proper formation in a manner which will be presently seen.
The strip is formed at each end with transverse extensions, one extension being designated 11 and the other 12. The strip is bent at a point intermediate its ends to form a relatively large and almost circular loop 13 whereby to bring the extensions 11 and 12 in contact and contiguous relation Specification of Letters Patent.

Renewed July 24, 1919. Serial No. 312,983.
thereby forming jaws between which the paper is gripped. It will be noted that while the jaws are of the same length one is of a greater width than the other, the wider jaw being the one indicated in the present instance at 12. The ends of the wider jaw are furthermore bent away and out of contact with the other jaw as at 14.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a new and useful form of paper cllp which has the advantage in that it, being formed of a single piece of metal, may be manufactured cheaply. It will be noted that the provision of the loop 13 adds to the utility of the device by increasing the resiliency of the clip and by permitting the jaws to be separated to a considerable distance to receive a large number of papers therebetween. The separated ends of the jaws also permits the papers to be readily en gaged between the jaws.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made, and I therefore reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction and arrangement of the correlated parts, without departing from the spiritof the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
An article of manufacture comprising a strip of material having its ends terminating in oppositely disposed extensions of dif ferent widths with certain corners of the wider extension directed outwardly and the opposed surfaces of the extensions bent in contact with one another.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses- THOMAS LEA.
