Description

D. J. SCOTT.
MUL'HCOLOB OFFSET PRESS. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 29, 1916.
Patented Aug. 12, 1919.
DAVID JOHN SCOTT, F PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO iSAZBE-LLA SCOTT-AND DAVID J. SCOTT, EXECUTOBS (3F WALTER SCOTT, DECEASED.
MULTICOLQR OFFSET-PRES$ Specification of Letters Patent. I Pat ntggfl A g, 12 iggy Application filed September 29, 1916. Serial No. 122,540.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID' J. SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multicolor Offset-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates generally to a multi-color offset press and has more particularly reference tothe arrangement of the v printing and other units in such a press.
The main object of the invention is the production of a machine that will print in several colors, and preferably on both sides of the paper, by the offset method without the omission of any elements necessary to produce high grade results, and in which the parts are so arranged that they may be easily accessible for the purpose of manipulation by the operator.
Accordingly, the invention consists of the features of construction, combination of partsand arrangement of. elements, several preferred forms of which are disclosed in the accompanying drawings. However, changes of construction may be made in the particular construction herein disclosed without departing from the legitimate and intended scope of the invention.
The drawing is a diagrammatic view in elevation showing the paper printed in two colors on one side and in four colors on the other side.
The machine is built up of a number 0 units, each of which comprises a formcarrying membenl, a transfer or blanket member 2 and an impression member 3, the form-carrying and transfer members being arranged one above the other and the impression member out of line with the other members to form an exposed operating side. In addition. suitable inking mechanism, in dicatcd by O, and, whenthe workrequires it, dampening mechanism, indicated by N, are used. It will be understood that suitable means are provided for throwing off the impression or for separating the cylindersas indicated by the movable hearings in which the blanket and impression cylinders are mounted, and that also the dampening mechanism is movable. by means of handle 34 in and out of engagement with the formcarrying member as indicated diagrammatically. Furthermore, when anti-smutting dev1ce';37 1s used in connection with certain of the impression cylinders, as will be more fully hereinafter described, such devices are likewise movable with relation to said imppesslon cylinders as by means of a handle In the exemplification of the machine here shown, there are two groups of units inclicated by U and U. One group consists of a set of two units A A superposed one above the other with their operating sides facing in the same direction. The other group U consists of two sets of units, one of which B C consists of two units arranged one above the other with their operating sides facing the same way; and the other set consists of two units B C in superposed relation with their operating sides facing the same Way, the twosets comprising group U being arranged back to backas shown and the two groups U U being spaced apart to provlde an intervening passageway as shown. In this instance, the units in the set COHSiZltUiJlD group U print on one side of the paper while the units in the two sets constituting the group U print on the other side of the paper. It will be noted that in connection with each impression cylinder of the units of the sets in group U there is associated an anti-smutting device 37. The source of supply of paper I is in spaced relation to the group U to afford a gangway and suitable guides are provided for leading the web to the machine. In like manner, the folding mechanism L is arranged to afford unobstructed access to the group U, there being a gangway between the group U" and the folder.
The Web is led from the source of supply I to the impression cylinder of the lowermost unit A of group U, thence to the impression cylinder of the uppermost unit A, thence over themachine to the impression cylinder of the unit 13, thence to the impression cylinder of the unit U, thence to the impression cylinder of unit C and thence to the impression cylinder of unit l3. With the former folder shown in connection with this device, the web may then pass to the slitter 104 where the web is severed and one half of it doubled back on the other half by its means of angle bars 102 and 103, the two halves of the web then passing in superposed relation to folder L. What is claimed, is:
1. A multi-color oflset perfecting press comprising: a plurality of groups of printing mechanisms, one group including a set.
-of printing mechanism Consisting of two units arranged to print on the same side of the paper, each unit consisting of a formcarrying, a transfer and an impression memher, the form-carrying and transfer members of each unit being arranged one above the other and the impression member out of line with the other members to form an exposed operating side, said units facing the same way; another group of printing mechanisms including two sets of devices, one set including a unit consisting of 'a formcarrying, a transfer and an impression member, the form-carrying and transfer members being arranged one above the other and the impression member out of line with the other members to form an exposed operating side, and the other set including a plurality of units, each consisting of a form-carrying member, a transfer member and an impression member, the form-carrying andtransfer members of each unit being arranged one above the other and the impression member out of line with the other members to form an exposed operating side, said units being grouped one above the other with their operating sides facing the same way, and the two sets of the second group being arranged back to back With the operating sides of theunits outermost; said groups being arranged in spaced relation to provide an intervening gangway. 2'. A multi-color ofi's'et perfecting press comprising: a plurality of groups of print-' narrates ing mechanisms, one group including a set 1 of printing mechanism consisting of two units arranged to print on the same side of the paper, each unit consisting of a formcarrying, a transfer and an impression cylinder, the form-carrying and transfer cylinders of each unit being arranged one above the other and the impression cylinder out of line with the other cylinders to form an exposed operating side, said units facing the same way; another group of printing mechanisms including two sets of devices, one set including a unit consisting of a form-carrying, a transfer and an impression cylinder, the form-carrying and transfer cylinders being arranged one above the other and the impression cylinder out of line with the other cylinders to form an exposed operating side, and the other set including a plurality of units, each consisting of a formcarrying cylinder, a transfer cylinder and an impression cylinder, the form-carrying and transfer cylinders of each unit being arranged one above the other and the impression cylinder out of line with the other cylinders to form an exposed operating side, said units being grouped one above the other with their operating sides facing the same way, and the two sets of the second group being arranged back to back with the operating sides of the units outermost, said groups being arranged in spaced relation to provide an intervening gangway.
Signed at Plainfield, in thecounty of Union and State of New Jersey, this 27th day of September, A. D. 1916. 1
