Description

c. M. wlLkihsou.
WRENCH. APFUCATIOI FILED APR. 1% 1919.
1,311,850. Patented July 29, i919.
INVENTOR G. M. w/urmsorv 4 TTORNEYS WITNESSES menw smme amnion mimpwrnliznmon, or m mnwrrnnn omioi l anplw To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, (.Iliannns M. WILKER- mm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Middlol'ield, in the county of (leauga and State of Ohio, haveinvented a new and Improved Wrench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches, and has for its primary object. to provide a device of this character by means of which a firmer grip upon the artirle operated upon may he obtained.
A further objurl of tlie invention is to so ronstrut't thr-v Wl'uluh as to make it rapablv of use in cmineution with pipes and otlu-r cylindrical articles. in addition to its use with nuts and the like as an ordinary 1nonkey wrench.
With thea-bove and other objexrts in view, referenre is bad to the accompanying (lIilW' ings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrenrh showing one of the positions thereof;
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the several parts in another position;
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the device: and
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring more particularlv in the draw ings. the device comprises a jaw member in and a handle member [1. The law nu-iniltt' l0 and handle momln-r ll are pimlallv eonnerted together. as at 12. tho. jaw member 10 being hifurrated. as at 13, and tho handle member 1] being redured. as at 14 to lie between the fur-rations of tho jaw member 10.
The reference rhararter l5 designates one of the jaws of the wrench, and said jaw is rigidly carried by the jaw member 10. The reference charnrtor 1G designates the movable jaw of the wrench. and is provided with a serewthreaded extension 17, whirh operates through an internally srrew-threarled nut 18 as in the ordinary form of monkey wrench. This internally srrew-threaded nut 1'8 is mounted in a recess 19 in a housing 20, and said housing is provided with spaced depending flanges 21, which are adapted to receive the pivoted ends of the jaw member Application filed April 16, 1819. Serial No. 280,435.
10 and the handle member 11. The depend mg flanges 21 of the housing 20 are pro vided with spaced perforations 22, which are preferably circular in form, and adapted to be rereived within said perforations 22 are pins 23 and 24. These pins 23 and 24 are rarried by the jaw member 10 and the gages the walls of its respective recess 22 and movement of the handle 11 to a posh tion where it is in longitudinal alinement with the jaw member 10, causes the movable jaw 16 to firmly grip the. artirle with whirh itis engaged. Vhen the handle member 11 is moved in the opposite direw tion, it will be seen that. the jaw member 16 will be withdrawn from engagement with the article with whirh it was previously engaged. thus permitting of removal of the wrench.
By this ronstrurtion. it will be seen that a monltvv wreurh is r-onstrurlml in whirl! a movement similar to that provided in: tinwrll known Stillson' wrenrh is o tained. thus rendering: the (lei-ire rapable of use both as an ordinary monkey wrench and as a pipe or rod wrench which is rap-able of use. with bodies of circular cross sei-t-ionnl form.
Having thus described the invention. what is rlaimed as new is:
1. A device of the rharacter described comprising a stationary jaw, a handle pivotallv carried thereby. a pin carried by 'd stationary jaw. a pin carried by the ha-nllih' said pins being arranged on opposite sides of the pivotal connection of the stationary jaw and the handle. a housing rovided with apertures of larger diameter than said ins and adapted to rerei ve the same whoreiiv the said housing' is rocked relatively to the stationary jaw Mil the handle upon movement of the lattqr, and a, jaw adjustablv carried by said houslng and movable respect to the stationary jaw upon 6 In a wrench, a rigid jaw, of pins pro'ecting from opposite 51 of, a hand a jaw, a. plural es pivotally secured' to said lty of pins carried by th with IHOVB- a lumlity (1 thererigid handle, a hbu'jihg prov1ded w1th a ertures adapted for receiv' 10 the ms of e rigid jaw and the pi'vo han le,sa1'd apertures being of tar dimensions than the pins recalved erein, a.nd
a jaw adjusts-bl carried by said housing.
