This invention relates-to carding engines and has for its chief object'to provide an improved arrangement-for simplifying and facilitating the stripping; cleaning and .qgrinding operations which will dispense with :the necessity forltransferringithe stripping thrush. from the cylinder to the dofli'erto perforinthe stripping *operationsand. in like manner the grinding roller from the cylinder toithe v operation thereby reducing labor.

adapted to swing independently of the door, ;so thatthe comb may bemoved into contact with the brush for cleaning purposes when the door is opened. i y 1: ,By thearrangement described all that is necessary'toperform the stripping operation islto turnthe handle a to lower the brush ,into. thewireo-fthe dofl'er and cylinder and plutthe rope or belt onto the pulley onthe strippingbrush spindle, one of such pulleys being-conveniently mountedyat each end of the spindle- When the stripping operation is completed the brushis raised out of the wire and if it is desired to clean it thedoor is opened and the brush turned in the opposite direction so that the backs of the wire run in contact with the strippin comb, and as the latter is situated at the juncture of the hinge the material from the. brush is transferred onto the open door. To effect the grinding operation the brush is removed and a grinding roller substituted therefor, any adjustments that may be required being effected by the adjusting screws on the arms and brackets previously described. The cover plate or end frame is advantageously fitted with a pipe connection d (Fig. 3) so that if it is desired to use the apparatus in conjunction with a suctiondust removing plant it only becomes necessary to connect a flexible or other pipe with the aforesaid pipe connection, the cover plate and end frames being constructed to make as tight a fit as is practicable with the adjacent stationary and moving parts of the carding engine.
. Thewires of the stripping roller A are inclined forward in the direction of rotation of the roller as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and are made of suflicient length to enable them to act as hooks which remove fiber simultaneously from the cylinder B and dofl'er C, and retain the fiber until it isremoved bythe comb a Heretofore, the stripping roller or brush has been used first to strip one of the members A, C, and then transferred to the other member to strip the latter.
What we claim as our invention' and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the United States is:-
1. In stripping brush apparatus for a carding engine having a doffer and a cylinder forming a throat, a cylindrical stripping brush, means for 'adjustably mounting the stripping brush in said throat, and means for moving such brush into and out of simultaneous contact with the carding surfaces of the d-ofi'er and cylinder.
2. In a carding engine having a cylinder and a dofier forming athroa't, means for adjusta'bly and detachably mounting acylindrical member which may be either a stripping brush or a grindingroller in said throat, and means for moving such member into and out of simultaneous contact with the carding surfaces of the do-ifer and .cylinder.
3. In stripping ibrush apparatus for a carding engine having a doifer and a cylinder forming a throat, a cylindrical stripping brush, means for adjustably mounting the stripping brush in said throat, a closely fitting casing adapted to inclose the brush, and means for moving the latter into and out of simultaneous contact with thecarding surfaces of the dofi'er and cylinder.
4. In stripping brush apparatus for a ends of the cylinder casing, means in the casin carding engine having a .dofi'er and a cylinder forming a throat, a cylindrical stripping brush, means for adjustably and detachably mounting the stripping brush in said throat, a closely fitting casing adapted to inclose the brush and to be connected with an air suction plant, end slots and slides in the ends of the casing to permit the insertion and removal of the brush and to permit its lifting and lowering movements and means for moving the brush into and out of simultaneous contact with the carding surfaces of the dofl'erand cylinder.
5. In stripping brush apparatus for a carding engine, the combination of' a stripin brush a casin therefor and a stri ping comb connected with the casing and adapted to be moved into and out of contact bly and detachably mounting a cylindrical member in, said throat, said means comprising slidable brackets situated at opposite or adjusting each bracket toward the cylinder or doffer, an extensible arm slidably mounted in each bracket and having a bearing for a rotatable spindle, a transverse slide formed in each arm, 'a block engagingeach slide, an eccen-tricallymounted pin passing through each block, a shaft connecting said pins, means for turning said shaft tomove the extensible arm toeither end of its traverse and means for-retaining the armin position in relation toits bracket. 1
7. In stripping brush apparatus for a carding engine having a. cylinder, a dolfer, and a cylindrical strip-ping brush, the combination with said parts of slida'ble brackets situated at opposite ends of the cylinder casing, means for adj usting each bracket toward the cylinder or dofler, an extensible arm slidably mounted in each bracket and having abearing adapted to be slid over the end of the stripping brush spindle,
.means for retaining said bearing in position upon thesp' ndle, acas ng adapted to inclose inserted and removed, a transverse slide formed in each extensible arm, a block engaging each slide, an eccentri-cally mounted pinpassing through each block, a shaft con necting said pins and supported in bearings and means for turning said shaft to put the brush into and out of simultaneous engagement with the carding surfaces on the cylinder and dofler.
8. In stripping brush apparatus for a carding engine having a cylinder, a dofier,
and a cylindrical stripping brush, the combination with said parts of slidable brack' ets situated at opposite ends of the cylinder casing, means for adjusting each bracket toward the cylinder or dofier, an extensible arm slidably mounted in each bracket and having a bearing adapted to be slid over the end of the stripping brush spindle, means for retaining said bearing in position upon the spindle, a casing adapted to inolose the brush and enable it to be moved into and out of engagement with the carding surfaces on the cylinder and doffer, a lid adapted to cover and uncover an aperture in the casing through which the brush can be inserted and removed, a transverse slide formed in each extensible arm, a block engaging each slide,
an eccentrically mounted pin passing through each block, a shaft connecting said pins and supported in bearings in the casing, means for turning said shaft to put the brush into and out of engagement with the carding surfaces on the cylinder and dofi'er, and a stripping comb connected with the casing and adapted to be moved into and out of contact with the stripping brush.
