In a carding machine wherein the fibre web is removed from the doffer by an assembly of doffing rollers the entire doffing region of the machine is enclosed by a casing and a suction nozzle is provided that extends over the full width of the doffer cylinder. In one form of apparatus, a stripper roller 12 having flexible or metallic wire clothing transfers fibres from doffer 11 to a re-directing roller 13. From the roller 13 the web passes between two co-operating plain rollers 14,15 which may be loaded to crush impurities. A knife-blade clearer 19 extends along the full width of roller 14. A casing 20, which may be of transparent plastic material, encloses the doffing region. It is hinged at 22 where it meets with the conventional doffer cover and at or near the hinge a suction duct 23 is provided to which is connected a slotted tube 24. Also communicating with the duct 23 is another suction inlet 25 and at 27 there is an aperture in the casing at which air may enter. A simplified form of apparatus has a single suction inlet at a position corresponding to 23 and a straight cover extending down to the cleaner knife 19 where a gap is allowed for inlet of air. According to the Provisional Specification separate components of the doffing apparatus may be furnished with individual suction inlets. For a carding machine treating synthetic fibres suction inlet tubes may be provided only in relation to the doffer and stripping roller. The dust and fly removal apparatus may have branches for removing fly at the taker-in and near the flats and a flexible tube may be provided to permit manual removal of accumulations. A rotary brush may rotate in contact with the doffer and stripper and another may contact the top delivery roller near the scraper blade.
