IMPROVEMENT IN MORTlSlNG-CHISELS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 130,874., dated August 27, 1872.

Specification describing a new and useful Improvement in a Mortising-Chisel, invented by LAWRENCE S. SEULER and JAMES CAR- PENTER, of Jeflersonville, in the county of Clarke and State of Indiana.

Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section,

and Fig. 2 a face view, of our improved chisel.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to that class of chisels so made as to draw out of a mortise the chips and shavings which it detaches from the block. The invention consists in providing the chisel with a roughened or grooved inner face and with similarly-roughened lips or side flanges, as hereinafter described.

A in the drawing represents the body of the chisel, of suitable form and size. a a, are the lips, formed at its lower part close to its side edges. These lips are toothed or roughened on their sides, as at b I), while the inner face of the lower part of the chisel is also roughened, as at c c, in manner similar to a grater. The projecting prongs, rags, or teeth 12 b c 0 support the shavings and chips, or enter them in part, and serve, therefore, to draw them out whenever the chisel is withdrawn from the mortise.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The chisel A provided with the roughened inner face a 0 and lip a, as specified.
