lie it, known that I, Howie M. BARBER, a citizen of the, United States end. resident of Stoniugtom in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented :i new and useful Improvement in Rotary Perfecting Sheet-Printing Mechanism` of which the following is e specification.
The object of this invention is to prevent offsetting in rotary perfecting sheet printing machines and comprises novel means for preventing the offsetting of the first printed side of the sheet onto the seoond impression cylinder during the printing of the other side of the sheet; and also preventing the offsettingI of the perfected sheets on one enother in the delivery. This invention more particularly consists in providing Ineens whereby the second impression cylinder is caused toteke iirst e slip sheet and then a sheet printed on one side, carry the two through the second printing operation and iinall deliver the perfected sheet and the slip eet together.

A sheet stop 15 is also provided at the table 9, which sheet stop is cerried b the movable sup port 16 for the drop rol ers so that the sheet stop 15 is moved into and out of operative position es the drop rollers are moved out of and into operative osition. Similar means may e employed for feeding slip sheets from thefeed table 17 to the stop 1 Vet the slip sheet feeding cylinder 6, which means comprises the endless te eerriers 19. 20, the sheet stop 21, the eeding rollers 22 end the drop rollers 23 arranged toy eoect with the rollers 22.

The printing sheet feeding cylinder 5 is provided with n set of: grippers 24 which is arranged to take the sheets from the tape cerrier 11 end transfer them to the grippers 25 on the first impression cylinder 2.

A tumbler cam mechanism 32 is provided for ripening and closing the gri pers 24 of the printing sheet feeding cy inder 5 to transfer the sheet from itsfeeding tapes to the first impression cylinder 2. A fixed cam 33- is provided for openingthe grippers 25 to transfer the first side prmtedsheet to the second impression cylinder grippers and to holdthe said grippers `25 open to receive a succeeding printing sheet-from the feeding cylinder 5.j A tumbler cam mechanism 34 is provided for o ening and closing the grippers 26 of the s ip sheet feeding cylinder 6 to transfer a slip sheet from the tape carrier to the second impression cylinder.
A fixed cam 35 is arranged in position to open the grippers 27 to deliver a perfected sheet and a slip sheet together to the Erst delivery reel 7 and to keep the grippers open to receive a slip sheet from the cylinder 6. A fixed cam 36 is arranged in position to open the grippers 27 to receive a first side printed sheet from Lthe first impression cylinder'2. Pressure rollers 37 are arranged in position to keep the slip sheet in register while the grippers 27 are b ei'ng opened to receive a firstside rint'ed sheet fromthe first impression cylinder 2.
A lfixed cam 38 isprovided for openin the gripfpers 28 of the first delivery reel to trans er a perfected sheet and a s' ip sheet together to the second delivery reel 8 to kee the said grippers open to receive a succee ing pair of perfected and slip sheets from the rippers 27.
A 'Xed cani' 39 is provided for opening the grippe'rs 29 to receive the perfected and slip sheets from the reel 7 and deliverthe same.

It will be seen that by introducing slip sheets between the second cylinder and the freshly printed side of the printed sheet as it comes from the first printin mechanism, the slip sheet will act as an o set sheet and will prevent the ink from the first side printed sheet from building up upon the top sheet ofthe make-ready 'on the second impression cylinder. It Will also be seen that this slip sheet by being delivered together With the perfected printed sheet serves to prevent ofi'- setting from one printed sheet onto another printed sheet in a pile.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form, construction and arrangement of the several parts Without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention; hence I do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein set forth, but

In a rotary perfecting sheet printing machine, printing mechanisms for printing on both sides of a sheet including first impression and4 plate cylinders and second impression and plate cylinders, a printingshe'et feeding cylinder arranged to feed a sheetto the first im ression cylinder and a slip sheet feeding cy ind'er arranged to feed a Ysli n sheet. directly to the second impression cyi inder, the first im ression cylinder being arranged to trans er the first side printed sheet to the second impression cylinder on top of the said slip sheet.
