Uicx-siiRvIcE ATTAcmrRnT-PLUG. e. I.
To allwkomz'tmay'conceim: Be it known thatwe, ALBERT C. KONG.
v and- WAH CHONG KAM, citizens of the United States', residing at Honoluluin-.the Territory of Hawaii, have invented new and useful Improvements in Quick-Service Attachment-Plugs, of which the following. is a specification.
This invention is an improved separable quick service attachment plug, adaptedto be snapped rectilinearly intoany ordinary Edison or other threaded socket and without the necessity of screwing the plug into the socket and without liability of twisting the conducting c'ord or cable, the object ofthe invention being to provide an -improved at-r v tachment plug of this kind which is simple in construction and which can be instantly attached or detached '.:Erom any ordinary socket such as an Edison socket. l
With the above and other ob]ects in view,
' the invention consists in the construction,
attachment plug constructed and arranged combination and arrangement of devices' vhereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: v. Figure 1 is an elevation of a quick service in accordancewith my invention. -v
Fig. 2 is a central. sectional view of the same in place in an ordinary Edison socket;
Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detail views. Our improved attachment plug comprises a pair of separable members 1, 2. The mem-I ber 1 has a cylindrical plug portion 3 and is made of fiber or of other suitable insulating material. A band 4, of brass, copper, or other suitable conducting material, is secured around-the plug portion 3 and constitutes an electric terminal and is adapted to be spaced in an ordinary electric socket` such as an i diameterithan the' interior diameter of the socket. The conducting band is provided at suitable points with openings 5 and the member 1 has radial recesses 6v which are coincident with `said openings. Balls 7 ,of
copper, brass or other suitable conducting material and which are of somewhat greater diameter than said openings, are seated in said openings and movable into said recesses and are normally held in seated, projected position by springs 8 which are arranged in said recesses. l
The member 1 has longitudinal openings 9` 10 extending therethrough and is pro- Edison socket and is of slightly lessiI per, brass, or other suitable-materiah'and `4which are arranged and secured, respectively, in said openings, .thestrip 11 being wmiected at its outer endwith the terminal band 4, as' at 13, by being soldered. or other- Patented May 20,1919.v I ,Application med noveniber 26, 1911s. seriarimaeaass. v
wise. suitably secured .to 'said band. The
Y stri 12 has its outer portion bent at right ang es', as *at 14, and extending inwardly therefrom'and secured in the bottom of a recess y15 in the outer end of the-member l by means-of a contact screw 16.
The member 2 is detachably secured to the 18 leads. Said member 2 also has a circular member by screws 17 vand 'has a central opening through which a conducting cordrecess 19 in its inner side and in the said recess are terminals 20, 21 to which the inner ends of the conducting cord are secured by screwsA 22, the said terminals being, respectivel provided with ,contact strips 23, 24 'whic member 2 and'are adapted to enter the openings 9, 10 of the member 1 and to, respectively, effect contact withthe strips 11, 1,2,
as shown in Fig. 2. s
Our improved attachment plug canibe in- `stantly arranged in a socket as it is only necessary to insert the band 44 rectilinear-ly in the socket, no screwing being necessary,
.the spring projected balls slidingv across the internal threads of the socket and engagproject from the inner side of the ing, one ofthe threads by the actionpof the springs 8 when the band is entirely in the .socket,'the balls and springs coacting with the internal thread of the socket to securely hold the p'lugiunA place.
The plug. canfbe instantly withdrawn endwise from the socket 'as the springs' yield and permit the balls to correspondingly yield and release the plug on the application of a moderate de ee of force on the plu 1 While we ha'vetlri` y a preferred embodiment of our invention,
we would have it understood thatchanges `may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several partswithout de'- erein shown and descri ed parting from the spirit of our invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
1. lAn attachment plug comprising insulating members connected together, one'of said members having a .passage for wires andthe other member having longitudinal openings therethrough and also having va radial recess, a contact band surrounding the second-named member and having an aperture coincident with said recess, a spring-backed element disposed in said recess and aperture and projecting beyond the band, terminalsfconnected to the inner end of the first-named member for the connection of vvires and having contact strips disposed in the longitudinal openings of the second-named member, a contact strip arranged in one of the said longitudinal o enings in lapped relation to one of the rstnamed strips and having an end portion abutting against the end of the secondnamed member and electrically connected with the band, a contact strip arranged in] 2. An attachment plug of the class described, comprising a pair of members detachably secured together, one of sald mem- Laoaaei bers having a plug portion, a non-threaded.
said member being further provided with longitudinal openings extending therethrough,- contact strips in said openings, one o f said strips being connected to said band a contact screw securing the outer end o the other strip to the outer end of the plug, balls seated in said openings of the band and. movable into said radial recesses, and springs in said recesses and normally projecting said balls; the other member having a central openin for the reception of con ducting cords and being provided with a recess in its inner side, and terminals secured in said recess and provided With contact strips for arrangement in the longitudinal openings of the plug member and engagement With the strips of the plu member.
In testimony whereof We a X our signatures.
