RECORD CABINET.
APPLICATION FILED OCT-21.1918.

I7 S a 3 GEORGE M. SCI-IAFF, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
RECORD-CABINET.
To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, Gannon M. .Sonarr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certam new and useful Improvements in ltecordpabr nets, of which the following is a speclfication.
This invention relates to record cabinets or recording devices of the type wherein sheets of paper are used to recelve records placed thereon from time to time, as in mahlng sales or entering other business transactlons, the sheets being collected and preserved for future reference or other uses.
The object of the invention is to provlde a device which is especially adapted for re ceiving riting on flat sheets, a lme at a time, and after each entry 1s made the sheet may be moved up to bring a new line into position, the entry being conveniently made through an opening in the top of the cabinet. This has certain advantages. The sheets are kept in flat form and so can be put in a book, after using. Also, the entries are concealed as fast as the sheet is fed along, so that errors are not apt to occur in consequence of confusion with previous entries. Also, means are provlded on the cabinet for indicating the columns of the sheets, so that errors due to making entries in the wrong columns are largely prevented. The device is capable of use with carbons, so that duplicates can be made. Various other advand tages will be apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings In the drawings-- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail in side elevation.
Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
The casing of the cabinet is indicated at 6, preferably of elongated rectangular shape, and it has a top 7, hinged to the head end at 7*. This top has a foot section 8, hmged thereto at 8 and adapted to inclose the rear or foot end of the casing by reason of its angular shape.
In the upper part of the casing is a shelf 20, quite close to the top thereof, and below this is another shelf 6*, which forms upper Specification of Letters Patent.

and lower compartments, the latter being indicated at 9, and adapted to hold a supply of fresh sheets, indicated at 17 which may be withdrawn as desired for use by opening the cover 8.
The top or lid 7 hasa transverse opening 17 near the upper end thereof, adjacent to a shoulder or offset portion, which is provided with a glazed opening indicated at 18, which may be marked with headings corresponding to columns on the sheets of paper, as for eX- ample, by securing a card to the under side of the glass.
The paper is fed by means of a feed roller 12 extending across the head end of the cabinet and cooperating on its upper side with a roller 13, and on its lower side with a roller 14. The spindle of these rollers 13 and 14 are held in slots 21 in the side Walls of the casing, so that they may be moved in and out toward and from the roller 12. They arenonmally held in contact therewith by a spring guide plate or shield 16 which consists of a sheet of metal bent to extend partly around the rollers 13 and 1 1 and around the far side of the roller 12. This guide or shield is held in position by its engagement with the rollers 13 and 14, and when these rollers are sprung away from the surface of the roller 12, the shield will yield accordingly.
For springing the rollers 13 and 14: away from the roller 12, I provide a toggle 23, the arms of which are connected to a finger lever 11 pivoted to the side of the cabinet, and when this lever is pressed down the toggle is straightened and the rollers 13 and 1 1 are lifted from the surface of the feed roller. This is useful in threading the sheets in between the rollers. The spindle of the roller 12 is provided with a hand knob 10, whereby it may be turned. 7
In the use of the device the lid is lifted and a sheet is placed on the upper shelf 20 and entered between the rollers 12 and 13. Then the lid is lowered and as the transactions occur entries may be made through the opening 17, on the sheet, which is fed along from time to time by turning the knob 10. The sheet is carried half way around the roller 12 by means of the guide 16, and is finally ejected onto the shelf 6*, where the sheets remain until the close of the day or until it is desired to remove the same.
The device will be found particularly serviceable for-holding sheets in a flat position, one sheet for example, being used each day and they can be removed from the cabinet in a pack suitable for filing or binding.
I claim 1. A record cabinet comprising a casing having an upper shelf and a lower compart- V nient thereunder, a feed roller adjacent the head end of the shelf, upper and lower rollers located respectively at the upper and lower sides of the'feed roller, and a spring guide plate engaging over said upper and lower rollers and extending across one side of the feed roller and adapted to yieldingly confine the upper and lower rollers to the feed roller. w
2. A record cabinet comprising a casing having an upper shelf and a lower compartment thereunder, a feed roller adjacent the head end of the shelf, upper and lower rollers located respectively at the upper and 7 lower sides of the feed roller, and a spring guide plate engaging over said upper and lower rollers and extend ng across one side Copies of this patent may be obtained for of the feed roller and adapted to yieldingly confine the upper and lower rollers to the feed roller, and means to spring the upper and lower rollers from contact with the feed roller.
3. A record cabinet comprising a casing having a hinged top provided with an opening, a rear end hinged to the rear edge of the top, a shelf extending along the casing and under said top and spaced slightly therefrom and adapted to hold a sheet of paper in position to receive writing through said opening, means to advance the sheet along the shelf, and means to return the sheet and deposit same in flat form in the casing under the shelf, and accessible by opening said rear end.
In testimony whereof I do afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses;
