I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
1 WILLIAM E. DIEHL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SAFETY-POCKET. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. DIEH'L, a citizen of'the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Pockets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in safety pockets, and has for its object the provision of a pocket of this character designed for use especially in connection with a watch to prevent theft of the latter, while being carried.
A further object is the production of a safety pocket as mentioned which will be of economical construction and of neat and pleasing dea'gn- Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
he invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a fragmental front elevation of a garment, such as a pair of trousers, in which is provided asafety pocket embodying the invention, and
Figs. 2 and 3, sections taken on substanji ially lines 2-2 and 3-3 respectively of The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings is applied to a garment such as a pair of trousers illustrated at 4, a pocket 5 of conventional design being provided in said garment for the accommodation of a watch carried by the wearer.
Arranged uponthe front side of the garment, directly below the opening 6 of the pocket 5 is a strap 7, one end of which is permanently secured as by stitching 8 to the garment. The other end of said strap is adapted to be releasably locked to. the garment by means of a ball and socket fastening, the ball portion. 9 being secured or mounted upon the inner wall of the pocket .5.- Said ball member projects through an opening 10 formed in the front wall of the pocket and the adjacent portion ofthe gar- J mentforengagementwith a socket member V 11 carried by the free end of strap 7. A
7 loop or keeper 12 is provided upon the front side of the garment under which the end of Specification of Letters Patent.
the strap and Patented Mai-.4, 1919.
Application filed December 28, 1917. Serial No. 209,236.
the strap is adapted to pass, and be held in position thereby. In use, the chain or fob attached to the watch carried, in the pock outwardly through the mouth 6 of the pocket and then downwardly under or around the strap 7 so that said stra I will serve' as "a et 5, is carried sort of anchor, permitting of uninterrupted access to the pocket for the removal of the watch by the user, but preventing the carrying away of the watch, as will be'rea dily understood. In order to accommodate the chain or'fob, the upper edge of the outer wall of the pocket is cut away or notched as. at 13. By providing the ball member of the fastening device upon the inner wall of the pocket 5 so that thesame passes through the outer wall of the pocket and the adjacent portion of the garment when engaged with the strap 7, it will be seen that the mouth of the pocket will, when the device is in use,'be restricted somewhat, renderin surreptitious removal of the watch more di ficult. At the same time, this securing to the inner wall of the pocket serves to hold outerwall of the garment in close engagement with the body of the wearer, resulting in the production or construction of a neat and tidy appearance. 7
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such. variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentis: r
1. The combination with a garment pocket, of means arranged adjacent said pocket for looking to the garment an article arranged in said pocket and having an exteriorly projecting portion extending over and downwardly from the upper edge of said pocket,
said means 'comprislnga strap provided at the outer'sideof the pocket adjacent the mouth thereof under which projecting portion of the article isadapted tothe garment, 11 0 said exteriorly 7 said locking means comprising, a locking member secured to the inner "wall" of the pocket and projecting forwardly therefrom across the mouth of; the pocket, the front wall ofsaid pocket having an opening for the passage of said locking member j "andmeans on said last mentioned end of said strap; releasably. engaging with said locking member, whereby the I and the free end of said strap are simultanepusly locked, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a garmentpocket, of; means arranged adj acent. said; pocket for looking to the garment an article arranged in saidsp ocket and having an exteriorlyprojectin'g p ortion extending over and downwardly, from the upper edgev of said pocket, said means comprising a strap provided at the outer side of the. pockt adjacent the mouth thereof, under which said exteriorly rr ielet lls re ien' h cl de s Wrassnee i c op i e s of this patent may mouth, of said pocket ai tr p ing .i fixed be obtained for five cents each by,add ressing the washington Di 0.?
wardly therefrom across the mouth of the pocket, the front wall of said pocket having an opening for the passage of said ball part; and asocket'part of said fastener on said last mentioned end of said strap reieasably engaging with said ball; part, whereby the mouthof said pocket and thefree end of said strap are simultaneously locked, substantially as. described.
. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses,
XVILLIAM E. DIEHL.
