HAWSER-CONVEYER.
To all whom z'tmay concern:
Be it known that I JOHN A. BROWNE, a citizen of the United States, residing 'at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of ,Georgia, have invented a new and useful Hawser-Conveyer, of which the following is a specification.
a This invention relates to ahawser conting. out-supplemental towing hawsers from a tug or other towing boat to a barge or the like, .orfrom one barge to another. Owing to the excessive cost of a towing hawser it is the practice to utilize only one hawser for connecting a barge or the like with the boat used for towing itbut on the approach of heavy weather it is often desirable, especially where an old and worn hawser is in use, to put out a supplemental hawser. Be-' cause of the weight of a hawser, it has heretofore been very diflicult to get it from one boat to anotherlwhile inmotion and because ofthis condition many disasters resulting from the parting of a hawser haveoccurred.
One of the objects of the present invention is toprovide a conveyer which is simple and compact in construction .and which, after being placed on the tow line or hawser al ready in position and fastened to thesecond hawser, can be caused to travel along the tow line, there being drags of novel form connected to the conveyer'and supported inthewater so that, as the boats move forward, the
relative positions of'the'two hawsers will gradually change untilthe second or supplemental hawser arrives withinreach of a person on the towed .boat whereupon it can be attached and used to relievethe first hawser;
Another object is to provide drag devices of novel form'which can be lowered into the water without producing a sudden j erkwhich might bend or break some portion of the apparatus, it being possible also to gradually lift said devices from the water after they have served their purpose.
With the :foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the descriptionproceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the constructionand arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of'the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates a frame having a removable side 2 which can be held in place in any manner desired. For example threaded studsf3 can be extended from the top and bottom of the frame and project loosely through the ends of the said side 2,

just as the conveyer is the terminals of the studs being engaged by i wing nuts 4. A central opening 5 is provided in the top and bottom of the frame and additional openingsfi are formed in the sides of the frame near the upper and lower ends thereof. .These latter openings receive trunnions or gudgeons7 extending fromrollers S and 9" located adjacent the upper and lower ends of the'frame, the roller 8 being concave, as shown, while the roller!) isprovided with an annular groove 10 at the center thereof. r a
A yoke 12 is adapted to straddle the front face of either end of the frame and has openings 13 designed to register with the opening 5 in said end so as to receive a pin 14; A cotter 15 extends through the inner end of the pin 14 to prevent withdrawal of the pin from the openings and an eye 16 is located at the outer end of the hereinafter set forth. By removing the cotter 15 the'pin' 14 can be withdrawn, thereby tending at right angles thereto. This arm is adapted to support a bar 18' which fits snugly between the ear 17 and thesides of frame 1, the ends of the bar projecting laterally beyond the sides of'the'frame 1 as shown. A set screw 19 may 'be' extended through the ear 17 and engagethe bar to bind against it and hold it against displacement upwardly or longitudinally relative to the frame.
Secured to the ends ofthe bar 18 are drag lines 20 each of which is secured to the open end of a flexible bag 01 bucket 21 constitutpin for the purposeing a drag. To the bottom or closed end of each drag is attached a haul line 22 which is likewise fastened to one end of the bar 18.
Under ordinary conditions the conveyer,
consisting of the frame 1 and the parts therein, the bar 18 and the drags 21 and their lines are stowed away and a singlehawser H ishawser H. The side 2 is then replaced and fastened and the hawser H is lashed to the eve 16.. Yoke 12 is of course located at the bottom of the frame and supports the bar 18. Afterthe parts have been positioned as described the drags 21 are lowered bymeans of the lines 22 so that they will hang with their open ends lowermost, and these drags will thus gradually enter the water and fill and will gradually assume their filled and substantially horizontal positions. As the boat 1% is moving the water will tend to hold back the drags 21 with the result that while the frame 1 will be retarded in its forward movement, the hawser H will pull forwardly through the frame and the hawser H will be paid out from the boat B. This action will continue until the frame reaches the towed boat whereupon a person thereon attaches the hawser H to the boat or bargedetaches it from the eye 16, pulls upwardly on the lines 22 to invert, empty and raise the drags 21, and then removes the frame 1 from the hawser H. If two or more barges are in tow, the frame can be taken tothe stern of the first barge after being received in the manner described, and can be used for carrying a hawser from the first to the second barge. By having a light line attached to the conveyer frame the frame can bepulled.
back to the towing boat after the supplemental hawser has been carried over and secured.
The roller 8 is of course designed for use in connection with an ordinary hawser. If,
however, a wire cable is used for towing, the frame is inverted to bring the roller 9 uppermost and the groove 10 Wlll receive the cable.
The yoke 12 can obviously be changed from one end to the other when the frame is inverted.
What is claimed is 1. A hawser conveyer including a roller carrying structure adapted to engage and travel along a hawser, and a drag connected to said structure.
2. A, hawser conveyer includinga roller carrying structure adapted to be supported by and to travel along a hawser, means for attaching a supplemental hawser to said structure, and a drag connected to the structure.
3. A hawser conveyer including a frame, a roller therein, and a drag bucket connected to the frame.
4. A hawser-conveyer including a frame adapted to open at one side, a roller within the frame, and a drag bucket connected to the frame.
A hawser conveyer including a frame, a roller therein, a bar connected to the frame, and a drag bucket connected to each end of the bar.
6. A hawser conveyer including a frame, a roller therein, a bar connected to the frame, a tow line and a haul line connected to each end of the bar, and-a flexible drag bucket having its open endconnected to the tow line and its bottom or closed end connected to the haul line.
7. A hawser conieyer including a structure adapted to be supported by and to move along a hawser, means for attaching a hawser thereto, a tow line and a haul line connected to thestructure, and a drag bucket having its open end connectedto thetow line and its closed endeonnected tothe haul line.
8. A hawscr conveyer including a reversible frame, spaced rollers therein, said frame having a removable side, and a drag connected to the frame.
. 9. A hawser conveyer including a frame, having a removable side, a yoke connected to one end ofthe frame, a transverse bar connected to the yoke and bearing againstthe sides of the frame, and a drag-connected to each end of the bar.
10. A hawserconveyerincluding a frame having a removable side, a transversely extendingtbar bearing against the sides of the frame, means for detachably connecting the bar to the frame, a tow line and a haul line connected to each end of the bar, and a drag bucket having its open end connected to one tow line and its closed end connected to one haul line.
11. A hawser conveyer including a structure adapted to engage and travel along a hawser, and a drag connected to said structure.
12. A hawser conveyer including a frame adapted to open to receive and be supported by a hawser, and a drag connected to said frame.
