PATENT OEFIcE..I
DANIEL WITT, OF HUBBARDSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHANK-LASTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 129,301, dated July 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL WITT, of Hubbardston, in the county of Worcester and State oflvlassaohusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Shank-Lasters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a side view oi my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same.
This invention has relation to shank-lasters for shoemakers use 5 and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the serrated jaws and adjustable fulcrumlever, whereby this improvement is adapted to different Widths of leather.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A A represent the serrated jaws by means of which the leather is tightly held. The shanks b b1 are pivoted together, the former being slotted to receive the latter. B B are the handles by means of which the jaws are operated. The upper part bZ of the handle B is slotted to receive the fulcrumarm C. At D the handles are pivoted together. To the arms b2 and C are pivoted lthe arms or shanks b b1. The arm C is constructed with a series of holes,
d, by means of which the shank b may be adjusted to different positions. At the end of the arm G is formed a convex foot, D, which lies on a line with the ends of the jaws and serves as a fulcrum to the shank-laster in drawing the leather over the last. As will be seen, the piece comprising the jaw b and its shank is of the form of the letter J, the bot-- tom or curved part being the jaw. The outer surface of said jaw is grooved and ridged so that it may be used as a sole-burnisher. K designates a spring for opening the jaws.
The object of the peculiar arrangement of the jaws and their shanks is to increase the power of the jaws and to give them the most desirable position for use.
What I claim as my invention, and des-ire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The shank-laster, consisting of the serrated jaws A A, the former, provided with the jointed shank 111B, pivoted to the adjustable jointed shank `b B' having the adjusting perforations d, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL WITT.
