To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that l, RALEIGH BERRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berclair, in the county of Leflore and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Self-Extinguishing Lamps; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

|lFhis invention relates to a lamp extinguisher and has for one of its objects, the provision of a device of this character, which may be readily attached to an ordinary lamp burner for the purpose of furnishing fuel to the lamp wick thereof, and which may be disengaged from the lamp wick when desiring to permit the lamp to extinguish itself.

Another object of this invention is the provision of a body having a wick therein adapted to extend into the fuel of the lamp and which may be readily moved into and out of engagement with the wick of the lamp burner for the purpose of furnishing the same with fuel and permitting it to extinguish itself when desired.

With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanyingdrawing, in which:

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates an ordinary lamp burner having the usual body portion 2, which is screwthreaded as shown at 3. The body portion 2 and burner 1 have the wick tube l1 mounted therein to slidably receive the wick 5, which is of a comparatively short length, suiiiciently long to permit it to extend from a point adjacent the bottom of the wick tube to a point within the slot G of the cap 7 of the burner.

The burner 1 has the usual chimney supporting arms 9 for supporting a chimney 10 upon the burner, as shown in Fig. 1 The foregoing description relates to a well known construction of lamp burner and to which my invention is applied.

A body 11 has formed thereon, downwardly and inwardly disposed arms 12, which are formed on an externally screwthreaded member 13. The externally screwthreaded member 13 is adapted to be threaded within the neck 141 of a lamp 15, which contains fuel for the burner. A wick tube 1G is formed in the member 13 and extends upwardly through the body 11 and has slidable therein, a wiel: 17, the lower end of which is adapted to be disposed within the lamp 15 to receive fuel therefrom.

The wick 17 is raised and lowered within the wick tube 16 by a wick operating means 18.

An internally threaded collar 19 has an annular flange 20 formed upon its lower end and is adapted to be rotatably received within a plurality of tongues 21, which are struck up from the body 11, thus it will be seen that the collar 19 is free to rotate upon the body. The collar 19 is adapted to be threaded to the member 2 for connecting the body 11 to the burner. The outer face of the collar 19 is milled for the purpose of forming a finger grip so that the collar may be readily rotated to thread the same upon the member 2. When the body 11 is connected to the burner 1. by tlie collar 19, the upper end of the wick tube 16 is disposed within the lower end of the wick tube 4L and by raising the wick 17 upwardly until it engages the lower end of the wick 5, fuel will. be furnished to the wick 5 through the wick 17 and when desiring to extinguish the lamp, the wick 17 is moved downwardly lby the wick operating means 18 disengaging the wick 5 and as soon as the fuel contained within the wick 5 has been burned, the lamp automatically extinguishes, thus providing a device, which will at a predetermined time, extinguish itself.

The aforedescribed device being especially adapted for use when it is desired to extinguish the lamp at a predetermined time, such as when a person is going to retire to bed, the wick 17 is disengaged from the wick 5 and the wick 5 will remain ignited sufficiently long enough to permit the person to leisurely retire to bed and then will extinguish itself for the want of fuel.
