Description

A. B. HOWARD.
DOOR FASIENER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 24. 1916v 1 ,290,560, Patented Jan. 7, 1919.
ALLEN B. HOWARD, 0F STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK.
DOOR-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. '7, 1919.
Application filed .Tune 24. 1916. Serial No. 105,544.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLEN B. HOWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Staten Island, New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved fastener to secure a room door, in a closed condition, from the inside; and is useful should the door be unprovided with a lock, or has a lock which could not be depended upon to prevent intrusion.
In the description of the said invention which follows, reference is made to the ac companying drawing, forming a part hereof, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved door fastener, and Fig. 2 a partly sectional top view of the device and parts of the door and frame.
Fig. 3 is a face view of Fig. 2 showing the device as turned end for end.
Referring now to the drawing, 1 is a narrow plate having therein a longitudinal slot 2 with notches a leading therefrom, and provided with a holder 3 which is riveted thereto.
The holder 3 is adapted to be forced into the door frame 4 and when in use is situated between the door frame and the edge of the door 5, as shown in Fig. 2.
7 is a second plate adapted to slide longitudinally of the first, and it is prevented from removal by means of a short plate 9.
The two sliding plates are connected together by means of a rivet 10 which passes loosely through them, and its head is fastened to a latch 12 carrying a pin 0 adapted to enter any one of the notches a and therei by prevent longitudinal movement of the slide independently of the plate 1, and its inner end f which is bent to a right angle with respect to its remaining portion.
It will be understood that when the bent portion (Z of the slide is brought up to the door, the pin a which passes through a segmental slot 0 in the sliding plate is made to enter one of the notches a, the door is held firmly against the door frame 1 and cannot be opened until the said pin is swung either up or down from the notch to the longitudinal slot 2 when the sliding plate becomes loose and the door can be opened.
As in any effort to onen the door when secured, would result in the-device being bent, I link to the free end of the plate 1 a brace rod 15, the free end of which is forced against the face of the door frame 4, as shown in Fig. 2.
I claim as my invention I In a door fastener, a plate having a slot and a series of notches, a holder attached to said plate and adapted to enter between the door and the frame, a slidable plate adapted to move longitudinally of said first plate and provided with a semicircular slot, a latch lever pivoted to said slidable plate the pivot passing loosely through said first plate, a pin attached to said latch lever movable within said segmental slot and adapted to enter any one of the notches in said first plate, and a brace rod linked to said first plate, the free end of which rod being adapt- EDWARD BIGGS, LOUISE BIGGS.
