IMPROVEMENT IN LOCKS FOR SATCHELS, &c.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 92,327, dated June 26, 1877 application filed May 22, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT FLocKE, of Newark, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Lock for Satchels, Carpet-Bags, &c., which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawing, in which-- Fig.1 is a longitudinal section of a lock.

In the drawing, A is the case containing the mechanism, and B is a bottom plate fitted into the inside of the e se, so that when the same is screwed upon ie frame of. the satchel this bottom plate win he held firmly in its place. In the central part of the case A a barrel, 0, is fitted, to which a plate, D, arranged in the inside of the case, is fastened through the bolt a. A pin, a, fast on the under side of the barrel (3, passes through this plate D, for the purpose of turning said plate. On one side of this plate a projection, m, is made, against which asuitable spring, w, attached to the side of the case, is made to act. On the bottom of the plate D a projection, J, is attached, reaching nearly to the top surface of the bottom plate B, and acts as a bolt, en tering the notch or cavity in the staple or tongue N attached to the hinged part of the satchel-frame, and passing into the lock-case A through the opening 00 made in the side of said case for that purpose. To the bottom plate B a hock-shaped plate, F, is attached, by means of a pin, S, capable of turning on said pin. The end toward the center of the lock-case of this plate F is made circular, and the outer end of the same is made with a cavity to form-two legs, to allow the key to play between the same, and to act either against the one or against the other leg for the purpose of moving saidplate F toward 'one or the other side. To the under side of this plate F a small projection, 2, is made, and to the bottom plate B a projection, 3, is attached. By moving plate F by means of the key this plate F will bend sufficiently to allow the projection 2 to pass over the projection 3 and then bend back again, so that by means of this projection 3 the plate F will be held in either position to which the same has been moved through the action of the key. h is a pin, fastened to the bottom plate B, upon which the key is placed, and around which the same moves.

In the position shown in the drawing, the turning of the barrel 0 will move the projection J out of the notch or cavity in the staple or tongue N, when the same can be Withdrawn out of the case and the satchel-frame opened.

When the frame is to be closed, the wedgeshaped end of the staple N will press the projection J sidewise until the same comes in a line with the notch in said staple, when the action of the spring to will force the projection J into said notch, and thus keep the staple fast.

To look the same, the plate F is moved by means of the key, so that its circular end comes before the edge of the projection J, as shown in Fig. IV, whereby this projection is prevented from being moved, and the projection 2 of the plate F, having been brought on the other side of the projection 3, will hold the plate F in that position until moved again through the action of the key.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The barrel G, with plate D having an elongation, m, acted upon by a suitable spring, w, and a projection, J, in combination with the staple or tongue N, arranged to operate in the manner and for the purpose described.
