To all whom t may Concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES ENGLERT, a citizen 0f the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Copy- Holders, of which the lfollowing is a speciiication.

The present invention relates to copy holders and more particularly to the work-clamping means thereof, an object of this invention being to provide a work-clamping means which will be adjustable to correspond to work 0f different widths, and will, at the same time, engage the work on the opposite edges thereof, while leaving the work free between said engaged portions, so that said work will be free for inspection. Another object of the invention is to provide a simple means for securing sheets or leaves which have been turned or swung over the top of the copy holder.

To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

This application is a division of an application filed bv me on the 24th day of January, 1916, Serial No. 73,924, and certain features shown herein are claimed in said application and will not be described in detail. As in said application, there is provided a standard 1, in which is guided the stem 2 of the work holder of the copy holder. Any suitable means may be employed for raising and lowering the stem in the standard. A line guide 3, described in detail in my hereinbefore mentioned application, is supported on the standard 1, and points out the line to be followed by cooperating with the work as the latter is moved upwardly by means of the work holder. While the invention is illustrated in connection with a copy holder in which the work holder is moved with reference to a stationary line guide, it is apparent that the invention is not limited to use with copy holders of this type.

The stem 2 in the illustrated embodiment has a reduced upper end 5 which passes through alined perforations in two lugs 6, extending vrearwardly from the flanges of a channeled cross piece or member 7, lying horizontally at the upper end of the stem or guide 2 and forming with the latter the work support or member.

For retaining the work on the work supporting member 2,-` work clamping devices are provided comprising preferably two spring arms 8 extending inwardly toward each other from opposite sides of the work support, and adjustable toward and from each other. This adjustment 0f the work clamping arms 8 is preferably secured by providing on said arms rearward extensions 9 and inward extensions 10, said extensions 10 lying between the flanges of the channeled member 7 and movable so as to be guided in the direction of the length of said member. Preferably the channeled member 7 has inwardly-turned projections 11 near opposite ends to confine the extensions 10 within the channel. The arms 8, with their extensions 9 and 10, provide two U-shaped members each having one arm guided on the supporting frame at one side thereof, and the-other extending inwardly and acting as a work holding clamp. The free ends of the arms 8 can engage the work at opposite edges 0f the latter, while leaving the work free for inspection between said engaging portions.

For the purpose of holding the turned leaves of stenographers note books or tablets, the cross piece 7 of the work support may carry two spring or laterally flexible arms 12 which extend toward eafh other from opposite sides of the work holder and are preferablv adjustable toward and from each other. These arms mav be supported by arms 13 which are guided in the channeled cross piece 7 being held therein by the inwardly-turned proiections 11. Each arm 13 with an arm 12 forms a U-shaped member.
