SAMPSON SCHUYLER, OF LONG BRANCH, NEW JERSEY.
GAME DEVICE.
Application filed February 8, 1918.
To all whom it may concern Be it known. that I, SAMPSON SOHUYLER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Long Branch, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game Devices. of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to what are known as game or puzzle devices, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class designed particularly for use as a game device but which also may be used as a puzzle device; a further object being to provide a device of the class specified which is designed to amuse and entertain both old and young; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a device of the class specified involving my invention;
Fig. 2 a cross section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and,
Fig. 3 a partial longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In" the practice of my invention I provide an oblong and approximately rectangular box or case a, comprising a bottom a a back wall a and end walls a and the end walls a are preferably beveled or inclined downwardly as shown at a and within the box or case is placed a horizontal top plate 7) below which is a space or chamber 0 divided by transverse partitions (i into separate compartments e, e and 6 having downwardly and forwardly inclined back walls 6 and upwardly and forwardly inclined front walls 6 which are of much less vertical dimensions than the back walls 6*, and with this construction the compartments 6, e and 6 open forwardly and upwardly as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The top plate I; is countersunk in the top part of the box or case and this forms, above said top plate, a longitudinal space or chamber f which, in the construction shown, opens Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 24, 1918.
Serial No. 215,990.
forwardly and upwardly and said plate is provided at spaced intervals with apertures g, the walls of which are conical in form or tapered inwardly and downwardly, and one of these apertures g is provided for each of the compartments 6, e and 6 I also provide a hollow ball or spherical body It, the opposite sides of which are provided with apertures 72 which correspond with the apertures g in the plate Z), and the opposite sides of the ball or body it in which the apertures [L2 are formed, are of such dimensions that said sides of the ball or body 72. will fit in the tops of the apertures g as clearly shown in Fig. 3; and the dimensions of the ball or body 71. are such that the circumferential distance between the centers of the apertures 72. formed therein is approximately the same as the distance between the centers of any two of the apertures g in the plate I).
I also provide and place in the ball or body it a plurality of balls 2' which are preferably three in number, and the diameters of which are approximately the same as the diameters of the apertures 72, in the ball or body It, and also the same as the diameters of the apertures g in the plate 6, but said balls, individually, are free to pass through the apertures 72, and also the apertures g.
In the construction shown the apertures g in the plate 6 are numbered 1, 2 and 3, beginning at the right, and two, three or more may be engaged in playing the game, and a player will take the ball or body it and place the balls 2' therein, and then place the ball or body it in the position shown at the right in Fig. 1, and then roll said ball or body it to the left in such manner that at each revolution of said ball or body one of the apertures 7L therein will come in connection with and register with one of the apertures g in the plate I), as shown in Fig.
3, and in this operation one or more of the balls 71 may drop through the apertures 7L and 9 into the compartment or compartments ee -e and the player who succeeds in getting the most of the balls 2' deposited in said compartments wins the game. Each player may have three efforts or make three attempts in manipulating the ball or body h, as above described, and it will be understood that all of the balls 2' may drop out of the body h at one movement of said body and into one of the compartments ee e in which event, the player takes the balls out of said compartments and replaces them in the body h and proceeds as before until he has reached the aperture 3 in the plate 6 but in a large majority of cases not more than one ball 2' will pass out of the body it into one of the compartments ee c at any one movement of said body h.
01- course, any desired number of players may engage in a game and any desired set of rules may be provided for the playing thereof, and the balls '5 may be numbered in the manner of other game devices of this class and said numbers used in counting the game, and my invention is not limited to.
the exact details of form and construction of the box or case a herein shown and described, rand the front of said box or case and the top thereof may be inclosed by detachable parts, ii desired, and changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is ,1. A device of the class described, comprising an oblong box or case having a top plate provided with spaced apertures, and a hollow spherical body the opposite sides of which are provided with corresponding apertures, the circumferential distance between thecenters of which is approximately the same as the distance between the centers of the apertures in said plate, and a plurality of balls adapted to be passed into said body through the apertures therein.
2. A device of the class described, comprising an oblong box or case having a top plate provided with spaced apertures, and a hollow spherical body the opposite sides of which are provided with corresponding apertures, the circumferential distance between the centers of which is approximately the same as the distance between the centers of the apertures in said plate, and a plurality of balls adapted to be passed into said body through the apertures therein, said apertures in said body and the apertures in said plate being oit' approximately the some dimensions.
3. In a game device of the class described, a hollow spherical body the walls of which are provided at opposite points with apertures of the same dimensions and three ball members the diameters of which are similar and also approximately similar to the diameters of said apertures, said ball members being adapted to be passed successively into said spherical body through the apertures therein and to be passed successively out of said body through said apertures by the manipulation of said body, substantially as shown and described.
. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as I my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. Washington, I). 0.
