To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. FISHER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Harrisburg, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Billiard Tallies, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a pocket billiard tallyboard and more particularly to a register board for a game known as pea pool in which sixteen pills are used to play the game in which each player receives two pills, one of which he registers and d1scards while the other is carried by the board so that no discussion or confusion will arise as to the number of the pills.

Another object of this invention is the production of a tallyboard for pocket b11- liards or pea pool which is provided w th a plurality of hingedly secured tabs whlch are adapted to be swung to faclhtate the keeping of a correct register of the playing order of the game and also prov d ng a simple and efiicient means for retalnlng the playing pills in their receiving sockets.

Another object of this invention is the production of a tallyboard for pocket b11- liards which is provided with hingedly secured tabs which are adapted to be swung for facilitating the keeping of the correct register of the playing order of the persons in the game, the upper portion of the sup porting back being formed to slant rearwardly toward its upper portron for allowing the tabs to be swung sufliciently to prevent the same from accidentally falling to a closed position.

WVith these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, wherein Figure 1 is a detailed perspective view of the complete tallyboard, a number of the tabs being shown in a raised position. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of one end portion of the tallyboard, a number of the tabs being shown in a raised position. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section taken through the complete device showing the same in use. Flg.

Referring to the accompanying drawing by numerals 10 indicates the supporting back which has at its lower portion the longitudinally extending recess 11 thereby forming a shoulder 12 at its upper portion. This body 10 is provided with a plurality of transverse apertures 13 through which the screws 14 are adapted to pass for securing the tallyboard to a wall or other support. A plurality of numbers 16 are formed upon the tallyboard within the recess 11. These numbers are formed at an equal distance apart and count from 1 to 16 inclusive.

A plurality of tabs 17 which are preferably rectangular in shape are adapted to be normally positioned within the recess 11 so as to cover the numbers 16. These tabs 17 are each provided with a numeral 18 which corresponds to the numeral formed within the recess 11 covered by the respective tab. These tabs 17 are held within the recess 11 by means of the hinges 19. These hinges 19 are secured at their upper ends to the inclined face 20 of the supporting back 10 and at their lower ends to the tabs 17, thereby hingedly securing the tabs upon the supporting back 19. By referring to Figs. 1 and 3 it will be seen that the face 20 of the supporting back 10 slants rearwardly toward its upper portion so that the upper edge of the supporting back 10 will be considerably thinner than the body of the supporting back 10 adjacent the shoulder 12.

The upper portion of the supporting back 10 is provided with a plurality of sockets 21 which communicate with the upper edge of the supporting back 10 and taper or slant toward their lower portions as clearly disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2. These sockets 21 are adapted to contain the pills 22 when the game is in progress, these pills having numerals corresponding to the numbers upon the balls for which the persons participating are playing. These pills 22 are preferably provided with a flattened face 23 upon which a numeral 24 is formed. It is, of course, obvious that these pills 22 may be round if so desired and placed in the sockets 21, since when the playing pills are placed in the sockets 21 the tabs will be swung upwardly to form closures for the front open sides of the sockets 21 thereby preventing the pills from accidentally moving from the interior of the sockets as disclosed in Fig. 3. lVhen, however, the game has been completed and the tabs have all been swung downwardly to rest in a closed position within the recess 11, the pills may be hit or pushed from the interior of the sockets 21, the forward por tions of the sockets being opened.

When it is desired to use this tallyboard, it is desirable to place a board adjacent the head of each table .and allow the same to be carried by the wall where the tally board may be readily observed by all persons playing the game at the particular table. After the pills 22 have been shaken and two have been chosen by each player, it is then desirableto register the turn in which each person plays. One of the pills 22 may then be discarded at which time the tab corresponding to the numeral upon the discarded pill may be swung upwardly registering the playing order of the person by the numeral in the recess 11 which was covered by the particular tab. The tab will be prevented from falling since the upper portion of the supporting back 10 slants rearWardIy so that the tab will be allowed to swing sulhciently toward the rear portion of the supporting back so that the tab will be thrown off center and prevented from accidentally falling into the recess 11. The discarded pill may then be thrown into the usual pill bottle or other suitable receptacle, such receptacle not being deemed necessary to be herein shown, the remaining pill which represents the particular ball for which the person plays is placed in the proper socket 21 which is disclosed by the particular tab 17 thereby retaining the play pill in the socket.

In playing the game where the tally board is used the sockets 21 are only used to hold the pills bearing the numerals and representing the balls which are being played for, while the discarded pills are put into a suitable receptacle. The particular tabs bearing the numerals corresponding to the discarded pills, however, are swung upwardly to indicate the order in which the several persons participating are to play. For example, suppose a player draws two pills, one of which bears the numeral 3 and the other pill the numeral 12. Now pill 12 may be discarded at which time the tab bearing numeral 12 will be swung upwardly to designate the order in which the person having these two pills is to play. The pill bearing numeral 3 may then be placed in the socket formed above the tab bearing numeral 12. This pill will repre sent the ball which the person will play for. Of course the tab will prevent the pill from accidentally falling from the socket While the pill will be sufliciently hid to prevent the other players from ascertaining the numeral thereon.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that a simple and efficient tally board for pocket billiards has been produced which will allow the correct register of the manner in which the game is played to be registered and which is adapted to carry the playing pills during the entire game.

Various changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principal or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is

1. In a device of the class described the combination with a back, said back provided with a plurality of sockets formed in its upper forward portion, said sockets having open forward portions, a longitudinally extending recess formed in said back and provided with a plurality of numerals, a plurality of tabs positioned within said recess, hinges secured to the inclined forward face of said back and to said tabs, said tabs provided with means whereby they may be severally swung upwardly to form closures for said sockets for retaining playing pills therein and for allowing the numerals covered thereby to be displayed to view.

2. In a device of the class described the combination of a back, said back provided with a plurality of sockets formed in its upper portion, said sockets having fiat bottoms and open forward portions, a longitudinally extending recess formed in said back and provided with a plurality of numerals, a plurality of tabs hingedly secured to the forward face of said back, said tabs normally resting within said recess, said tabs adapted to be severally swung upwardly to form closures for the open forward portions of said sockets for preventing playing pills from accidentally falling from said sockets, the flat bottoms of said sockets adapted to normally retain playing pills in said sockets independent of said tabs.

In a device of the class described the combination of a back, said back provided with a plurality of retaining sockets formed in its upper forward portion, said sockets having open front portions, said back provided with a plurality of numerals, a plurality of tabs hingedly secured to said back and normally covering said numerals, said tabs adapted to be severally swung upwardly to form closures for said sockets for retaining playing pills therein and for allowing the numerals covered thereby to be displayed to View.

4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a back, said back provided with a plurality of retaining sockets formed in its upper forward portion, said sockets having open front portions, said back provided with a plurality of numerals on its forward face, a plurality of tabs hingedly secured to said back at a spaced distance below said sockets, said tabs adapted to nor- 10 playing pills, said tabs adapted to be swung upwardly and close said sockets, thereby retaining playing pills in said sockets and holding the same against accidental dislodgment.
